"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2129118

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

to be honest, i don't really like them either
wouldnt say they 'look like shit' but
the costumes are nice and i like the idea but the execution looks like its lacking fundamental knowledge. the 'style' looks more like a veil for bad anatomy and the stylized anatomy is lacking in rhythm. it feels like it was just sort of copied from another artist on tumblr or something.

also the shadow shapes and contrast are very unconfident and wishywashy. again, the low-contrast, soft-edged 'style' feels like a veil for lack of fundamental understanding of lighting.
everything really just looks flat, but then some parts look like they're trying to be dimensional. it's kinda inconsistent
hope that makes sense
i think the artist has a good intuition, they just need to improve on their fundamentals a bit and this could be a cool style/project

like i said, it's the lack of rhythm. the body's silhouette is all straight lines and it doesn't to a very good job of directing the eye in any meaningful way. i understand it's a base pose but you can do better than this with a base pose.
read the first few chapters of 'force' by mike d. matessi he'll probably do a better job of explaining what i'm trying to convey. there's pdfs all over the place.

a big part of successful animation styles is the rhythm, line of action, energy, etc. it's pretty amateur looking when those elements are absent.

there are lots of visdev artists that communicate good design in tandem with good illustration. if 'i'm just thinking about design' is always your excuse for poor illustration than you will perpetually be less competitive

which is fine if you're not interested in being competitive, but then i question why you'd even bother posting for crit if you're going to shoot down anything that somewhat resembles negativity

i like this current piece a lot, very nice composition. also don't worry about personal model sheets looking stiff, it's a fucking model sheet, hahaha, it's to help you keep a design consistent throughout a work, your "normal" work seems fine in it's flowiness, but i'd never tell someone not to study more vilppu or whoever this force guy or anyone for that matter, ALWAYS STUDY MORE. but yeah, if you are planning on like, sharing/designing a model sheet for use by other artists, i'd say it's important to try and imbue some of that character's personality with said sheet unless it's a straight up turn around.

the legs/socks/feets and hands needd to be tightened up to fall in style with the rest of the rendering of the piece. if you did that it'd be a neat lil design piece. not really what the current movie/game marketplace is lookin for but i'm sure you could find your home in some smaller possibly indie game studio or small movie projects, there's a really pushback against the current trend in visual developement, for smaller projects anyways.

also, depending on how those feet look when you finish them, i might suggest studying how to properly draw feet touching the ground at different viewing angles. right now they look very flat which would only be possibly if the viewing angle of the piece was from floor level/super far away with a telephoto lens/an orthographic projection (fancy talk for a deliberate lack of perspective)

also study background work, it's always important to be well rounded and a small studio's would love to take out two birds with one stone (you might already be workin on this but i thought it'd be a useful tip since you seem to be lookin for work so i'mma mention it anyways)

What is your portfolio aimed at anyways? Doing a structured portfolio that has a clear theme throughout is not a bad idea at all. Many clients in the animation industry for example even want to see that sort of thing because it shows you can work towards a goal, flesh out a story and keep a consistent style etc.

Just don't neglect your art while doing it. I personally wouldn't do an original story either because it can turn out a bit cringy without you realizing it. Lots of artists take somewhat obscure fairy tales or tales and legends from different cultures and create their portfolio around a redesign of that while still focusing heavily on showing off their art skills with character designs, color keys, full illustrations etc.

I think the shoulders are fine and they can be explained by style. If they bother you, try adjusting the size of her left collar. It's sticking out farther than the right.

But story wise, it may make more sense for her to have bigger shoulders because she is a military person by the looks of it. Given the size of her legs, the shoulders do seem a bit small although not impossible.

They've got years of experience and an extensive visual library. It's not that they draw without hesitation, it's that they know exactly what they are drawing.

I think, to no fault of their own, they mislead people by drawing like they do. It's not a matter of learning to be confident, their confident as a by product of their extensive range.

well, been there, done that.
it probably helps but i don't know if on the same level as actively studying references. didn't people say that the best way to build a visual library is to study?
passively taking in stuff doesn't seem to help all that much.

I know i was just saying to not forget to keep consuming entertainment, sometimes ideas comes from where you don't expect them,
many times i had great ideas because i was masturbating to something, i am not saying that you should just read manga all day, but
if you stop consume things and start just studying art models, i think you will start having a more hard time coming up with things.

when it comes to consuming tons of media, i think most of us are doing that already. and i do find inspiration in it.
but i wonder if a visual library can be built from this. things don't stick unless you study them. i think consumption by itself isn't enough.

Oh yes i extremely agree, if you want to improve drawing from imagination you definitely have to study from reference and the try to recreate the reference
from imagination and then compare what you forgot and repeat etc. I was talking about the first point that was talking about not being able to come up with new ideas
and feeling like he was drawing the same thing.

There's no bad references book. If you want to get technical about the subject, then Super Pose Books have some boring ass poses. You only got it cause there's asians in there you goddamn weeaboo. Don't let bias shit like that impair your judgement, it'll bite you in the ass in the future.

you know, this is kind of why i'm asking. i don't mind non-asian books either. but from the little i've seen, western ones they tend to lean more towards fashion poses
the SPB seemed simple and clean, so i thought why not.

if there are some good ones, by all means name them. i only know these two

That doesn't even make sense, since if you know any weeaboo speak, even the super poses try to mimic that of american action movies.
