Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises. Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up.

Do not forget to resize and crop your images before uploading them. This increases your chance of getting help and criticism.

Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," consult this link:
http://irishopp.hubpages.com/hub/how-to-draw-learn
If your question is related to Loomis perhaps you should consult this link as well.

This thread's exercise will be a color study. It's mostly monochrome, so it should be easy.

I want a printer also, first thing I did was look at what inks I can get easily and cheapest.

it was Epson mainly.

(amazon) reviews of all printers are the same, some love it some hate it.

so its really just a case of getting best value for money.

search for whats most popular.
also best make sure it can print to the edge of the paper. some cant.

>It fucking sucks until you actually learn to use your tools and techniques comfortably. When what you see in your head is what ends up on the page, you'll be more content. But you'll probably never be truly happy, no picture is ever "perfect"
>Don't lose sight of the fact that drawing is supposed to be enjoyable. Too many people get bogged down in it not looking perfect right away and get frustrated and quit. Shut your mind the fuck up, sit there and just put pen to paper. Draw whatever the hell feels right. And draw shit you enjoy too.

make a schedule before your 3 year illustration course

focus on one aspect of the fundamentals at a time. such as doing a week of perspective only then a week of anatomy only etc
only try to apply what you learned when youve actually sat down to try and learn it

in those small increments when youre studying a specific fundamental rule have goals like one day learn about 1 point perspective and on ly do that then another day it might be learning specifically about the legs of the human body

ditch the still lifes until youve studied for a while then aim to do still lifes that relate to what youve learned

Visual Measuring: The act of horizontally or vertically connecting different points of the body to correctly lay in proportions. For example if you were in a life drawing class what you could do is hold your arm out fully stretched and line up the pencil point with a part of the body. In this case let's say the elbow. From there you can hold out your pencil horizontal or vertical and match up other landmarks on the body to better determine if where you're drawing the elbow is correct. In much the same way you can also use this to get a head height and compare how long certain body parts are or how many head heights they are in distance. You get the idea.

What you can do is draw a smaller rectangle inside your paper and put the vanishing points outside this box but you can't draw outside the rectangle. This can help you "imagine" what it'd be like on a regular piece of paper.

Drew my hand as the first drawing. Screwed up on the middle finger as I realised that it was at a steeper angle than I first thought (I didn't use an eraser because I couldn't find one). To be honest though, it's probably closer to reality than my spindly index finger.

I'll draw something else before the day is out and then I'll do some proper exercises tomorrow.

I like them, some are pretty undefined and the length of the hand/fingers seem very inconsistent, unless this is something you're aware of and you're trying to create different types of hands, be cautious of the proportions. I'd recommend you attach them to bodies, though. Even if it's the figures are just gestural, and you're focusing on defining the hands, it helps to keep everything in proportion if nothing else. Drawing up a gesture and then creating several different hands for the one gesture is something I like to do personally.

One of the things you must always be conscious of when drawing is to see every part of the object in volumes/3D shapes. it's very subtle, but your brain readjusts to viewing your 2D drawings as 3D and it's like your pencil is feeling the forms of what you're drawing.

since you want to focus on adding more three dimensionality to your drawings, focus on studies that push you to focus more on volume and construction. life drawings, constructing planes of the face, perspective drawings, etc. anything you want to try, try it.

Larger value range.

1. Start your canvas with grey in the background. I use 80% grey.
2. Don't use pure white or pure black.
3. Try to use the whole value range. For starters, decide on the value of your main object, make the shadow value half of that.
In your case, your main subject (the rocks) has a value of around 80, so make your shadow value 40.

Trying to see figures as forms... pic related. Also have decided that I will not give up on something. If I make it and it turns out like crap I'm gonna do it again until it turns out slightly better (see top right corner... vs larger figure).

"This was recommended to me by a much better artist "Don't settle for your first attempt at a drawing. EVER. Always sketch it out multiple times, do preliminary sketches. Once you get a lot of skill then you can start considering doing things in one go, but for now repetition and never settling for your first attempt will go a long way to making you progress."

Also a bit of research has shown me that a lot of the pros and old masters do "preliminary sketches" before getting down to a final product as a way to explore and test ideas....so seems legit.

Measure relationships between features and dont be afraid of cluttering the whole thing with lines and circles, those can be erased later. It's not like you are making a piece for an art gallery. The drawing will go in the bin or hidden away to look back at when you got good.

that is not enough drawings, especially not if what you posted is an example of the drawings you are talking about.

also either the books you are reading are not good or you are not actually applying what you learned like you think you did. it's one of those two things.

you should start with the basics, can you draw a box? can you draw a sphere? can you draw a pyramid? can you draw a cone? a cylinder?
can you draw them from any angle?

keep drawing what you want to draw on the side, but if you really want to try and get better start with those simple shapes and practice drawing them until you can draw them from any angle from memory without needing to look them up. then start studying from a book.

Then you really have to spend more time looking at the reference. Right now it looks like you plotted down symbols and tried to make the nose look 3D. Drawing from reference is like 99% studying the reference and 1% drawing. Also, the straight on angle of the face is terrible for a beginner. Harder to see forms etc. Try 3/4 views instead.

when attempting something like one feature a day, remember it'd important to render in as well. without filling in the value of the lips, and making them all one, solid line, you revert back to symbol drawing. I suggest drawing a bundle of lips. look at how they curve and bend, and thinking of your line as both the divider between the skin and lips and occlusion shadows. remember the form underneath and how it effects the way the mouth bends

keep these things in mind as you go through this and all the other features. keep at it buddy

your facial anatomy is very off friendo. you need to hit the books a little more it seems. the nose is far too large, and his forehead is much to big too. I recommend bridgeman for facial construction, his work helped me alot so I'm biased towards him

another tip when you are unsure about the quality of a work, try to flip it. since your brain gets into a grove on how you see things, correcting it in your mind and accounting from the natural slant you give when your right handed, reversing it brings up a billion small issues you would normally miss. To check, a lot of the old masters looked at their work in the mirror. I suggest giving it a shot if you feel like your work is off

because you are probably making it too hard... that's not necessarily a bad thing, challenging yourself is good! but if you are really feeling like you are struggling you might want to start like this-

draw a horizontal line on a page. that spans the entire page. put two points on that line. then draw an arbitrary vertical line somewhere between those two points. draw a line from the top of that vertical line to each of the two points. repeat for the bottom. you now have the information you need to construct a box in perspective. rinse and repeat a bunch of times until you have a lot of boxes all in that two point perspective.

once you've got that down start again. this time only place one dot on your first horizontal line. try to draw your boxes again freehand all facing towards and vanishing towards this single point.
