From what I've seen, it's three things.
>1. Conscious Control
These artists are aware of EVERYTHING going down on that page. How dark the line they're making is, the angle of the pencil tip they're about to put down, the light of both the canvas and the object they're drawing, the tone and composition they're going for, etc. They develop this through..
>2. Mileage
Thousands and thousands of failed drawings, each analyzed constantly for these exact things and failures fixed in the next one. Make no mistake this isn't their 100th or 150th drawing, this is somewhere in the thousands. And this is a direct result of

Some more miles Johnston since this thread introduced me to him and his sketches are god-tier. This stuff is also amazing to use as studies to figure out how they manage some problems. One thing I'm loving right now is the texture/background stuff. I never really considered learning to make a tightly controlled pattern thats subordinate to the subject. Right now I'm using flowers and waterfalls trying to get the same effect and it's not too shabby.

Achadobu has one of the most interesting and bizarre art styles I've seen.

His skill level is bizarre, like his sketches are amazing, but his studies and paintings look like shit by comparison.

Either way, his work is super inspiring, it's a shame he disappeared.
