Technically, that's impossible. Baby brains take a while to gain enough dexterity to hold a pencil.

Less technically, everyone's drawn since they were kids. There's nothing special about drawing when you're under 10.

Even less technically, people that like to draw usually don't take it seriously until they finally hit a particular milestone in their life. They decide 'I'm going to become an artist', so they start doing studies and drawing daily. That's the point you 'start drawing'. If you say 'all my life', you probably haven't hit that 'start taking it seriously' point, so you THINK you're an artist but don't actually commit like one. Not always true ofc, there's lots of artists who really did grow with their craft, but more often then not, the people that say this are idiots thinking that because they drew in middle/highschool, they're artists.

Now I feel bad lol I shouldn't have used 'special', shoulda said something like 'unique'. Kids usually start trying to draw realistically around 10 and then most kids 'give up' drawing around early puberty. So, the decision to continue drawing is the 'real' beginning of someone who draws as a hobby/career/wutev.

Everyone drew up until puberty. Nothing all that unique about having drawn as a kid (unless you're picasso-tier, pic was when he was 12/13)

A lot of art schools will take subpar portfolios and you can still get passing grades with bad work. The teachers will just tell you that you're bad and why and hope that you take that criticism and improve with the next assignment. In fact they prefer you go the 'muh style' route rather than churning out shit with bad anatomy (Source: me). You don't get failed for sucking, you get failed for not doing the work.

I had a girl in my class who in the second year was slated as "gonna make it" by the whole class. But her work was really detailed and time consuming. By the third year she was failing her GenEd classes, then turning in incomplete work to her illustration classes. Eventually she just dropped out.

Dear god, "projects", i remember my projects, i think at some point i had 1500+ drawings, each containing a character for several "mangas" i deluded myself into thinking i could do.

I threw it all away, i felt relief knowing nobody would see it. The only thing i have left is a frigging gay elf with long green hair that i painted on my wall, fuck weeabooism, i hope 'till the end of the year i'm good enough with paints, so i can remove the last trace of my weeaboo ways.

More cringe:
>acting like you're god's gift to humanity
>that sick jealousy burn you get when someone more talented than you is around
>muh style, you just don't understand it
>downplaying other people's work, so you can feel superior
>acting like you know anything about art beyond which animu will be starting next season
>getting depressed when someone call you out on your bullshit
>refusing good knowledge because it doesn't fit your delusion of what mangaka's do
>downplaying your own work to gather sympathy points
>drawing for hotpockets since you think drawing is the only reason people are talking to you in the first place
>falling for the whole "imma be a mangaka trap" and all the bullshit that comes with it: learning japanese, moving to japan, publishing on the jump, getting an anime...
>spewing for anyone who wants to hear how school is not important since you're going to be an artist, followed by falling grades, followed by deluding myself even more "it doesn't matter, i'm going to be a mangaka, i don't need to know this shit"
>making cringe worthy art and showing to people, all proud of myself, expecting them to give a shit, praising me and since they're nice people they do indeed, which drives me to keep doing the same shit art
>buying a shitload of art supplies i have no idea how to use but "hey, the pros use it and i'm a pro too, right?"

I was i little turd, jesus christ, i would give anything to go back in time and punch myself.

Pic related is from a chic who only draws furry shit and transformation porn. She hasn't improved even the slightest bit in the 10+ years she's been drawing but why would she? She gets hundreds of B&W commissions every single month with her crude art and people have literally sunk thousands of dollars to see the same smut pics drawn over and over again. Someone once calculated atleast 3000$ has been spent on Frog porn alone.

Now THAT is a delusional artist.

Yeah, that'd be fucking easy if I was a human scanner or meat calculator. I don't have the kind of comprehension skill to mathematically judge whether or not my proportions are correct when I put down my guidelines or loose gestures. >Yeah, that'd be fucking easy if I was a human scanner or meat calculator.
That's practically the definition of being good at observational drawing. It comes with practice.

Try measuring proportions from real life by doing the thingy where you hold your pencil in front of your eye and set the distance between the tip and your thumb as a standard unit, then compare it to another measurement on the object you're drawing.

Try sitting in front of a doorway, straight on, and doing this just to draw a rectangle. Now measure the doorway with a tape measure and see how well you did.

>I don't have the kind of comprehension skill to mathematically judge whether or not my proportions are correct when I put down my guidelines or loose gestures. All I can do is just very vaguely try to guesstimate distances across the page as I lay my construction down.

Don't guesstimate. Measure.

>Try measuring proportions from real life by doing the thingy where you hold your pencil in front of your eye and set the distance between the tip and your thumb as a standard unit, then compare it to another measurement on the object you're drawing

See I don't get this method. In theory sure yeah that can work, but how does that actually improve my internal distance-measuring abilities? I'm not going to be able to just take 5 minutes for every slight proportion I do in any significant work. It's like the kind of tip you might tell a 5 year old to get their relative proportions just right. It's reliable but not in anyway practical.

Especially when you don't have a reference or model of what you're drawing in front of you.

I get that in theory yeah you're supposed to internalize it and just "Memorize" the specifics of whatever you're doing until you don't need the thumb-trick anymore but realistically for me that just doesn't happen.

>Don't guesstimate. Measure.

You cannot measure in every situation, it's not realistic. Especially when you take foreshortening and perspective into account, the nuances of proportion just become absurdly complex.

It's something that cannot be mastered with technique alone but some kind of rote force or raw determination and nerve. Like learning how to draw a damn straight line or good circle. Just how many notebooks does it actually take to get it right?

>> No.2145444

>>2145439

It's to start. Before you get a sense of it, it's better to measure than guess when you don't know. Do it long enough, and you start to get a sense of it and be able to do it by intuition. It's the same as with any other skill. It's the same as any other skill, the way an experienced driver will be able to be a better judge of things as more and more becomes second nature compared to a new driver who has to stop and think about everything.

I'm not great at it myself, but I found that when it came to proportion, I got better and better with eyeballing it the more I did construction. Do it enough, and eventually you internalize certain elements. It won't all snap into place all at once, but you'll start to see what looks wrong far easier and earlier.
