1. Post in the beginner thread
2. Find a method to draw heads/ faces, like Loomis (Proko has some nice videos on youtube)
3. Use a reference
4. Don't draw on lined paper

You can improve by drawing. Anything. You are a beginner so get a few hundred hours in. And your concern about your faces being "soulless" is just silly, get rid of the notion that correct means unoriginal.

I just airbrushed very broadly over the image. But i think you need to push the overall values more and also unify your coulours. You don't need to go as dark as i went. But overall you need to decide what is your brightest light and your darkest dark and shade from there.

It unifies them, and also challenges you to think of the textures as 3D forms, with depth and value, rather than just flat skins.

Some people do spheres, but I think that would probably be a lot easier for most textures. Making a cube of water was very challenging.

>>2137595
Your drawing looks a bit iffy. The angle is great, but pose itself is kind of flat. The arm on the right is parallel to the leg, and the other leg is non existent. My eye goes to the big hand, then the face, then gets lost. I would do a few different poses, and find one that plays on the strengths of your idea a bit more.

I suggest you think of function more. How well can the joints bend? Will his movement be restricted at all? How do the pieces attach to his body and each other? How does he take the armor off or put it on?

Also a lot of the things on the legs are asymmetrical from one leg to another. You can try making the armor pieces more interesting shapes too. Maybe look at existing designs (either real life or video games) and also some invertebrates that have some sort of shell armor.

What is the role of the guy? Is he a foot soldier? Maybe he needs a gun and some ammunition packs and some bags or something. Is he a policeman? Maybe he needs some sort of identifying paint job on him then. Is he a gladiator? Maybe he needs some futuristic sword and shield. You show no understanding of value, since you're color picking from the reference (maybe even at 1pixel precision even) without fundamental knowledge (or use of them anyhow), and thus the values are all over the place.

You show no understanding of form either, since you're just splotching on top of a ref, and when you see the hue differ too much you pick a new color.

You don't blend colors, so there's no edge variety to help give a sense of shape and form. Just hard edges laid down with ill considered strokes.

You should post the reference you're using, at least. But don't kid yourself. It's your own time and energy, you know? There's not an infinite amount of those.

When you have the basic shape and form down it tends to just be in the way (for me at least). But if you need to reference it later you have it on a separate layer (ofc), so you can just bring it back and correct anything you missed or whatever...

Digital still life, I'm super uncomfortable with rendering in digital and I think part of the reason is because whenever I make a mark there's such opacity and hardness to it even if it's like a soft round brush. I can't replicate that feel of oil on canvas or watercolor.

Any tips for rendering and not feeling like shit when painting digitally? Give me oils or acrylic and I can paint this in a couple of hours but digital it always seems like I'm fighting the computer. I watched ctrlpaint's stuff and tried to use his method but it feels artificial and detached. Maybe I'm just being a fucking moron but does anyone feel the same or have a remedy for this feeling?

Treat it as a brush heavily loaded with paint. I like to keep flow and opacity at 100%, and in Brush Settings under Transfer I like to set Opacity control to Pen Pressure. If it feels too opaque for you, you can always turn down the percentage for opacity and/or flow, but painting with a light touch should accomplish similar results.

You can also try experimenting with different brush packs. Those a Jaime Jones one floating around that has a lot of brushes that feel a little less sterile. Try to find something versatile, usually something with a relatively square-ish outline, some chalky texture on the inside, and lays down opaquely.

You may also find it helpful to lay down a ground color that matches the ref instead of a neutral gray as your base. Helps to judge colors more accurately.

You need help with both of those mouths on the bottom. The major issue is that they don't appear to be curving away. The mouth and lips form a curved surface that protrudes from the rest of the face. Even when smiling and the lips being compressed from being stretched this curvature should still be apparent especially from any angle besides head on or direct profile. Go study some mouth and lip anatomy, or get in front of a mirror, turn slightly sideways and smile. You should be able to get some ideas of what to fix from doing that.

Some more aggressive shading (darker darks, more variation in tones) will also help, but right now your main issue is basic construction.

Good luck.

nice material indication. try and actually render out the stick and the tube thing on his neck. The metal plates are dope but they feel incredibly flat, like they don't wrap around the character. If that was intentional I would make everything else dimensional as to push a contrast His head feels way too detailed next to everything else.
Design wise overall it's actually kind of bland. Even with characters you need a sense of composition and design. Decide on a focal point like maybe weapon if it's an aggressive character, it's head if you you design it better and want to make it a highlighting point (probably don't want to do this one and bring too much attention if this is a background peon character of some sort).

The colors aren't bothering me as much as the values. The planes of the face that would be perpindicular to the light source aren't lit as they should be, and it makes the image look wrong.

Take another pass at the values on the underside of the nose, bring the eyes closer together, and work the shadows around the folds of the eyes particularly the upper eyelids.

Overall it would be fine if not for the inconsistent light source

It's not that im not going to ever draw realism ever again or not practice realism. It's just that the manga/anime style doesn't call for it because they do things with their mouths a certain way some times.

Here is the drawing but me using my own mouth as a reference.

Vehicles look great. Characters look like they were drawn by a different (and worse) artist. Wouldn't say they match the style of the cars either if I'm honest.

I think the way you've shrunk the wheels on the cars and exaggerated the height/length of parts of the body should be mimicked in the character designs. The characters I imagine getting into those cars are pretty weird looking and yours don't look nearly pushed enough. Maybe start with silhouettes and see where they go?

I think your perspective looks fine. Living in an old city in Germany, I can tell you that with how the roads twist every which way, and up and down hills, you very often run into real life examples of bizarre perspective. In some towns almost no two buildings align with each other in any in any aesthetically pleasing way. Of course, I don't know if that's what's being represented here, but it feels like it to me.
