"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2123083

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

No fuckwit definition, a practical one actually. Artist entailing someone who is genuinely creative with their skills. Someone who can design and invent without a crippling need for formula, which is what a technician is. A phony trying to pass off as being talented.

Every body wants recognition for their efforts. And everybody learning wants shortcuts so they can catchup with others. With all this clambering for respect and skill why make such a cookie cutter product out of it? Where is the fun and challenge in that?

This thread and the porn thread is flooded with dull uninspired uninteresting work and yet nearly everyone wants some kind of notoriety. Why? None of you are actually learning anything that would make any of you standout. And the so called good ones have nothing to contribute. And most of those anons usually end up lying about what they do in regards to what they preach. So learning is actually corrupted from the start.

Basically I'm calling bullshit on all of you. Basically I'm calling bullshit on your reasons to be here. Basically I'm calling bullshit on all the tips, advice, critiques you tell each other. It's all bullshit.

that's like saying why "why learn the guitar if you could learn the violin?". at least if i read you right, you are just saying that anime is shit, right?
if you have a different taste compared to us, don't force your view on ours. saying things like
>dull
>uninspired
>uninteresting
have you considered the opposite? if you showed us some of the shit you liked, i really doubt i would fawn over it.

in fact, cartooning (anime) is good because it is creative, fun and free. the fact that one has to simplify their drawings also means that everyone will have to work with a different interpretation of things.

I'm pretty sure most people do that instinctively. Although you're so damn pretentious to imply that one's motives behind learning to draw has to go beyond just wanting to draw gay chicken dick in animu form. It can, but wanting to draw and wanting to draw well are pretty basic urges.

Not him, but I think the instinctive element is more "I like this." Or "I like the eyes." or "I like the colors." and less "Why do I like the eyes and the colors? What about it makes me like them?"

I know that before I started drawing I still had collections of art I liked, but I never actually critically analysed why I liked it beyond the broad stuff.

to be fair, while I don't agree on things being inherently better, there are styles (like anime) which are typically more appealing because they were designed with the purpose of being appealing to people as opposed to something like abstraction which is designed for something entirely different.

If you had standards you wouldn't be echoing any of the advice that floats around here let alone try to defend it. Most of it is just sound bites with little to no actual learning behind it. Often it is puffery and empty rhetoric.

And everyone wonders why their stuff doesn't have that certain appeal, that peculiar aura, that others elsewhere seem to have in their work. It's almost like everyone here is too scared to question their own assumptions and mainly want validation for going with the crowd.

look at some refs for bows and arrows.
I'm assuming this was the type bow you were going for, the wood part is curved, but the string is typically straight until its being pulled.
The reason arrows fly so fast is because the massive amount of tension, the weight of the bow will not be enough to bend the string if that was what you were going for there, and it wouldn't bend in that manner in the first place.
If he's holding the wood, then it'd be curved toward the string rather than away resulting in a straight string.
you should also apply some perspective to that back leg.
the glasses aren't angled enough considering how angled his face is.
your arrow also looks like shit, but I can chalk that up to a place holder.

no no, people question themselves all the time. and most aren't experienced enough to know anything for sure. it isn't that easy to aquire or teach that "special something".

Not really

It's not that the line quality itself is awful, it's just now you don't have a bunch of chicken scratch masking your lack of anatomy understanding.

At this point you have a bigger issue to tackle - study human anatomy then go back to stylizing. I think you have a decent inherent sense of style but your lack of fundamental knowledge makes it irrelevant.

Also, showing some overlap will help give your lines more depth. At the moment the only overlaps you're showing is places where you accidentally drew lines over eachother (like in the groin).

Honestly, I'd recommend dropping this and studying some figures with the help of Mike D. Matessi's "Force" book in combination of some master copies of styles you like (at my school they make you study Chris Sanders so he's the first name that pops into my head but I'm not sure how similar he is to what you want to do). Also study Michael Hampton's anatomy books for muscle and structure.

I used Hampton's Design and Invention book, and Bridgman's constructive anatomy as a compliment to it. Both are in the mega link. When you cover a section in Hampton (Torso, legs, arms, etc.) find the same section in Bridgman, draw everything.
Take it slow and don't move on until you know what you were studying. Do gesture drawing every day. Challenge yourself from time to time and draw something from imagination (that'll tell you how proficient you are at each part of the body) and work on weaknesses. Give yourself deadlines but don't kill yourself if one part of the body takes longer than you thought, it happens to everyone. That's how I did it, I can't guarantee it will work for anyone else, and I'm pretty far from being finished myself, but it seems like a pretty standard way of going about it. Good luck, anon!

>> No.2131298

The back of the cap is fine, maybe tone the value down a bit. It doesn't need to be spectacular, since it's not the focus. Two things though, the cross section of the hat makes her head look flat, and there should be some fabric overlap on her fingers if she's pulling that hat down.

I think your biggest problem is how wide you made the nasal bridge, after all there is a small distance between the corners of the eyes and nose, they don't start next to each other.
As for the cap, if she is pulling it down on her head, the front the cap would touch the hair, and there would be almost no shadow between them.

Im kinda curious to what you guys think about the stabilizer in sai, is it worth keeping it low in order to train good strokes? or would that just be a waste of time? I feel like im cheating sometimes even tho its as legit as any other tool.

>> No.2131963

You gotta use your tools to their full potential, man. If you can pull off the same kind of lines traditionally, then I think you're fine and shouldn't worry about it. I always think of the stabilizer as a way to make up for the disconnect caused by using a tablet.
Also excellent work on the pic B)

>> No.2131965

>>2131961
I'd say do a mix of both, although I do my line practice primarily on paper and keep the stabilizer on high most the time because my tablets are a bitch to get good lines with.
but having better lines will never hurt you even if you have the stabilizer on.
don't turn it off though if it helps you right now, if it begins to get in the way feel free to turn it off, but making your art work suffer just because you want to suffer is never a good idea.

1. Collarbone feels a bit symbol draw-ey. The attachment points should be at the top of the sternum and the humerus.

2. The upper left arm is a bit too long.

3. The pose is a little off-balance - the right leg should be placed slightly further out to compensate for her leaning posture.

4. Is she supposed to be sort of tucking the fingers on her right hand into the pit of her left elbow, because a) that's weird, and b) it feels a bit like an excuse to avoid drawing fingers.

5. Facial features are...well, without trying to sound too harsh, they're a bit all over the place. You would do well to study head construction a bit more, especially how the facial features are placed on the skull.

Overall I would echo the sentiment of the other anons recommending you study a bit more anatomy before trying to stylize too much. But you're certainly not off to a bad start, and the drawing does have a lot of appeal. All you really need is just a bit of a firmer background.

While /ic/ will exaggerate how much you need realism to draw animus its still has a seed of truth. Animus are still based on real people and poses/dynamics will still be the same regardless. if you're just copying of animus then it'll hurt you when you realize the person who drew your reference originally fucked it up, you can't fuck up reality though.
basically its easier to assume everyone is stupid and to base your drawings off reality then stylize it as you see fit rather than copy someone else's mistakes.

/ic/ also doesn't even mention a lot of shit you need to be good at any stylized art, like knowing about visual design. Like I've seen some really technically proficient artists here but a lot of their shit is usually stiff and lifeless, but then I see some doodles done by an animation student at one of the handful of decent art colleges out there and their shit is fucking lively and well designed.

If you were to follow /ic/'s advice to heart you'd end up drawing realistic human figures with animu eyes. I mean sure I can just say "hurr just fucking think for yourself" but that requires you to know good advice from opinionated bullshit, and if you're a complete art newfag you just won't have the knowledge to gauge which is some asshole spouting strong opinions and which is honest to goodness advice. Not sure If I'm qualified to give out advice but I got most out of screencaps from the anime I watch.

Off the top of my head, Takashi Nakamura did some really great character animations/designs in the 90's. You can really get a nice sense of fully realized '3-D' form of the character animated from his works. The gif is from Peter Pan no Boken, an anime he worked on.

You need to build your visual library, which does mean drowning in refs. Don't just copy them, try and reinvent the ref yourself- choose another angle, move a few limbs. Do some new poses before you go to bed, try and draw those poses from memory when you wake back up
Go read through some of Loomis's Figure Drawing for All it's Worth. Skip the anatomy part, read how he describes poses, copy his drawings and make some yourself. Good luck, anon!

Don't know where else to ask, so I figure this thread is a good a place as any to find out.

Can anybody recommend to me an art program for my pc that fits my 'style'? Preferably cheaper or free, if that's no trouble. I used to have FireAlpaca, but I just couldn't get the feel of it.

I'm using fuckin ms paint right, it's all I have in my armory that I can get to work with me well, but obviously, it has its limitations. I guess I like a more graphic, solid look to my drawings. Sorry if I sound like a fag or something, I just don't know where else to ask.

Pic related is some shit I threw together real quick. Can post more if it'd help. Thanks

Appeal isn't necessarily quantifiable. I mean, things like big eyes, large foreheads hit on a primal level, but there is no hard and fast rule to make a drawing appealing. It almost entirely subjective.

Like I said, find what personally resonates with you, emulate that. Not just what make your (presumably) dick hard either, look for the aesthetics.

If you're going to scribble, try not clutter the images with extraneous lines. Right now you're trying to search for the perfect contour by scattershot. It's probably in there, but you won't find it.

Try to go for shapes instead, build up form. Even if you're scribbling, it'll feel more solid. I used your composition as an example. Hope it helps.

Other than that you're gonna have to figure out for yourself. There's no trick to discerning form. In fact you can probably recognize how a leg can be simplified in a cylinder, etc.

You can try still life drawing as well, grab some household objects. Don't try to copy the contours perfectly, find the cones/cubes/spheres the make up the objects and draw through.

So please give those characters some life and don't post this crap anymore.

I totally understand the point of this thread, people are TOO EAGER to copy instead of simply sitting down and drawing, take some inspiration from artists you l!I've and respect, photographs, transform it and make it something new.

I am not happy with my art or it's quality. There is enough crap on the internet so why should I post more crap to fill up these glorious things we call databases. why should people have to see that. I asked in another thread, but I might as well ask here as well.
I draw in a weeb style, and I'm having a bit of trouble drawing female characters from various races. Anime usually just goes by skin color, clothes and hair and reuse the same handful of facial structures, so I'm wondering if there are any artists who actually know how to draw characters with more distinct racial features. In particular, I'm looking for Asian eyes and the protruding jaw/lips of ni.. Africans.
It's not like I'm incapable of drawing this myself, but it would be helpful with some references, to see how other artists deal with it. The problem is making it look natural and aesthetically pleasing within the relatively simplistic style I draw in.
