Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises. Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up.

Do not forget to resize and crop your images before uploading them. This increases your chance of getting help and criticism.

Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," consult this link:

If your question is related to Loomis perhaps you should consult this link as well.

This thread's exercise will be a regular study. You're free to do whatever kind you want.

One problem is that Loomis doesn't really explain the features of the face at all. FWAP is not actually a complete beginners book in a lot of ways.. Your problem is you're having a hard time following the form and proportions and one of the reasons that may be is that it's just hard for you to fucking draw, period, judging by those crazy lines everywhere.

I recommend the videos at the top here (don't go to the board though it's gay and dead - t. owner)

https://archive.is/PN8vX

You want to be able to draw lines and curves and ellipses like a real nigga so you need to follow Peter Han and then come back to Loomis after dicking around with Peter Han's lectures a bit.

Learn the fundamentals. Make friends with the fundamentals. Have fun with the fundamentals. Spike the fundamental's drink. Take the fundamentals back to your place and rape them. Put your child in the fundamentals. Have the fundamentals sue you for all you're worth. Break down in court in front of the fundamentals and reveal you only did it because you didn't know how to reveal your true feelings for them. The fundamentals will burst into tears as well, but the judge will send you to jail for rape. 10 years later, as you finally leave the jail, the fundamentals will be there, waiting for you with your 9 year old son, Form. Love the fundamentals for the rest of your life.

Then get run over by perspective on your way home with your new family.

I can only tell you why mine looked like total shit (worse than yours) and what made them a bit better: We are supposed to use circles and the like to construct the heads but in the "end product" no one is supposed to see that we used those forms except people who know how to construct.
Loomis says so when he talks about drawing Santa Claus at the start.

For example in most of your pics there are two lines which connect the cheeks with the nose. You redraw half of the circles you used to construct the cheeks. I did so too. But that is wrong.

Look at what Loomis does in the final step. It kinda made 'click' at the end and I knew my main problem. Can't put it into words though.

I've seen a lot of artists have the same problem (feeling more control with paper vs digital), but I can't offer much help with it. You could try drawing a shitton of construction drawings digitally until you feel comfortable with it.

Or you might just be someone who draws better on paper. A lot of artists draw on paper then scan it in to color, and they do it for the same reasons you gave. It might just be how you work.

I was just about to ask this and it ends up being the second post. Neat. It's 5 days old and still hasn't been answered. Not so neat.

So, my gesture drawings don't look nearly as good as this fellow's, although granted I did just pick up the Vilppu Drawing Manual yesterday so I hope I'll get the hang of it with enough patience and practice. What I fail to understand though, is how to draw them "without contours" as they say, however looking at these drawings the contours seem very apparent to me. So I'm unsure what to pay attention to. My failed gestures generally fall into two groups; twisty stick figures that often don't well capture the action of the image, or drawings with attention to the contours making them really formless.

I think the best thing about these is that they show you are willing to tackle big projects and that is a great thing.
I'll just briefly mention the things that I noticed right away:

First painting:
-main figure seems copy pasted from a completely different environment
-her expression and gesture are vague
-compositional problems make the eyes go darting in all directions with no flow. composition is very hard so take your time. just consider and try to simplify.

Second painting:
-I think this one has better flow and organization than the first.
-many forms appear flat (totoro, girl). this may just be a matter of putting simple shading/highlights in the right places. It's already happening with the small pink cat on the right.
-for a piece like this, I think that emphasizing the silhouettes of each element will make it far more appealing to look at. A simple example is the girl's red headphones against totoro's belly. I immediately look there and that look to be the main focal point. You can create this effect in other places, create some kind of hierarchy and "manipulate" how people look at the picture.

-for both, I think there are many basics that need work. so it may be better for you to ignore everything I said above and work on some basics first.
-e.g. try taking one main element of the picture and doing your best work on it. (e.g. only the girl) focus your study.

both are stylized and for stylized art to work, it has to look like you know what you are doing. they are getting there but not totally confident. but you already have that willingness to tackle hard stuff, which I think is really impressive. It will take you far.

its bad, but keep at it dude you'll get better

try to be more confident and deliberate with your lines, i can see that they're really fragmented. drawing with shoulder movements rather than wrist movements will help you maintain long straight lines in places like the handles.

if you're having trouble seeing the forms try looking at the negative space rather than the object itself.

You're gesture drawings are great, but it looks like you overthink your more finished forms. Take a break and draw stuff just for fun. It'll let you get out of that funk. I suggest drawing in pen. You'll do more drawing because you can't erase.

>>2139915
I see a lot of potential here. Two things to help you improve: About 3 months of figure studies ( at least 3 times a week) and think about confidence in your lines. You should see results after about a month or so of doing figure studies. That alone will take you out of the beginner thread. Confidence in your lines will come from doing lots, and lots of drawing.

The fold around the shoulder is a giveaway. You are matching the values, but you aren't painting them like you are understanding the shapes in volume.

Those sketches look a lot like some stuff I did a few years ago. I know the feel. Draw-- a lot. Every day, and you'll see a change like night and day

>>2140081
Pay attention to proportion. Look at the size of the feet compared to the head. Look at the amount of space between her waistline and her bent elbow. Look at how far her shoulder sticks out and draw a straight line down to see how it compares to her hips. Doing this type of comparison trains your eye to how to approach an image or form when drawing.

I'm no expert, but you're going over your lines a lot, try to spend more time looking at the pose and figuring out how the ribcage and hip especially is rotated in 3d space. This will help you plan out the gesture more, draw few smart lines. Don't worry about time, time is mainly there to keep you from over complicating things and going into detail.

Secondly, don't focus so much on contour - instead of shaping out the legs and arms, just imagine the bones, as you don't know anatomy yet (I suspect atleast) you'll later learn to build anatomy on top of the bones, forming out the contour. You haven't focused so much on this on some of the figures you've done which is good, just try to keep contour out of your head as much as possible.

I would shape out the hip and ribcage as circles/eclipses first. Boxes is also a good idea to practice emphasizing their rotation in space. When I do a gesture I start off with the head as a circle, the neck and then a line of action for the entire pose if it's a tricky one, else I try to image how the spine is placed. Then I circle out the ribcage and hip and connect them with C or S curves to show which side is stretched and which is pinched. The legs and arms I put in last and spend the least time on, normally just a few lines, not resembling their contour at all.

You're getting there, I always recommend Hampton's figure drawing class videos for gestures as it's the one I've related the most to. Just remember you have to figure out your own way of feeling out the gesture, as it's just a tool made to help you shape out the pose in your head and on the paper. Artists often have their own quirks for their gesture drawing, as it's what makes sense in their head. Because of this you should take away from as many resources as you can to get different approaches. You should atleast check out Vilppu, Sycra, Hampton and Proko's versions.

choose a solid light source and let that be the starting point from where your colors work. your colors are all over in this and the light source is indistinguishable so its hard to tell what colors he would really be. since you used vivid colors throughout , that means he is in full light, making the center of his body really strange colored. Light and color are two things that go hand and hand, and once you have one down, the other should come easy

Right before I thought about finding out what other people did when they encountered my problem, I was about to cut a papercraft prop similar to what I wanted to draw because the references I had weren't sufficient because I can't look at a 2d image the same way I can look at a physical object. /ic/ seems to be by the book and with the results I see here that's more than okay, but would it be worth it to go down this path my rookie mind is leading me, if only to see where it goes before trying something different? If not, how do I see more with less? Are good references often found only when thinking outside the box and getting references for things that are far-fetched from what the object actually is (i.e. something is sleek and smooth = use a modern car as a reference alongside a reference of what it's supposed to be)?

When learning anatomy is it better to do values or sketches? Probably both? Should I concentrate on single bodyparts first or start with whole bodies?

>> No.2141111

>>2141107
Whole bodies. You can learn how an arm looks and become the master at drawing arms, but if you don't know how it is placed on the body and how it interacts with the rest of the body, it will look terrible. Do both sketches and values, but I'd say concentrate on sketches first while you're still new to anatomy.

>> No.2141122

>>2141107
You have years ahead of you of practicing so don't worry about the order too much. What you need to make sure of is that every study has a goal to it (Improving your sense of value, proportions, control, anatomy, on and on and on). So if you're working on the anatomy of the torso, make sure by the end you remember the anatomy of the torso. It doesn't matter if you rendered it really nice if you lost sight of the major goal. Eventually all the parts come together equally and you'll be able to pick and choose what weaknesses to work on.

Kalen Chock has a good tutorial about studies (paid but...you know, this is the internet) you should watch. Basically, when you finish studying something - recreate it from memory to see what you retained.

I agree with >>2141111 in saying to work on whole bodies. The human body is big on unity and rhythm, focusing on singular elements before the global ones will only hurt in the long run.

Keeping in mind that I was attempting to practice constructing the face and features and that I know next to nothing about value/tone, I have the following questions:

1. Some things seem 'off', like the left side of her jaw or the angle of her brow. Is there some trick to getting the alignment right or is it just a matter of getting good? Because I swear didn't notice until putting it down and coming back a little while later and now it's too late to fix certain things like the eyes and nose without basically re-drawing the whole thing.

2. Whatever you want to say about the drawing, it doesn't really look like the woman in the reference. I've had this problem before where people I draw look more like mannequins than the people I'm trying to draw. Any tips for trying to 'match' the source?

This sounds like mechanical perspective which comes up in How to Draw by Scott Robertson.

you'd draw the ellipse in a plain rectangle and mark the major and minor axes (the parts where the ellipse touches the rectangle). You'd then redraw the rectangle in the perspective you want it in with the same points marked on rectangle. you then use those points to draw the ellipse.

this is about the best I can explain it.

As far as I know we decide what is rectangular in and what is not when we establish horizon and station point which in turn sets in stone diminishment for rectangular shapes, so instead of drawing true square that obeys already known 45 degree measuring point, you can draw plane that defies it and draw true ellipse inside.

I think it's awesome to look at and see that someone is trying to think outside of the box like this so good job on that. What I don't like though is that sense of 'why' I get.

Let me explain that a bit more. When looking at characters with unnecessary things on them I'll sometimes get a nagging feeling of why, but usually I can let it go. Such as too many belts on final fantasy characters. It's ridiculous and I ask why, but most times I can just look passed it. However with this character the huge winter coat only covering her midsection creates a much bigger 'why.' Since it is such an integral part of the design and pretty much the entire focal point it makes the entire attempt at fashion a failure. With the Final fantasy belts usually they are small elements that could be passed off as just flavor, tacky, but flavor. This, however, is the main attraction, the core element to the design and it just doesn't work because it's not functional at all.
