He's the only serious pro I can think of off the top of my head who publicly has made his opinions very clear on the matter. But I bet there are more who just keep silent. It's kind of breaking social conventions to shit all over other pros in your industry and their approaches, especially such a common and widely accepted technique.

Haven't shaken hands with anyone since anytime I went somewhere with other artists it was usually a convention of some sort and was too busy watching stupid shit like cosplay wrestling.

I was taught life drawing by some really good ex-pixar employees at sheridan back when it was good.

How long ago was this? I left sheridan 3 years ago because it was shit, and the fourth years at the time made it sound like it had been shit the whole time they were there.

What are you doing now? Working professionally?

I saw Glen Vilppu at art supply store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for lessons or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen pencils in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending that his hearing aid wasn't working, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the pencils and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to feel her movements,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that's how it works. After she scanned each pencil and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by stuttering really loudly.

Saying you like it is the easy way out of actually analyzing an uninteresting piece. Few would say so little about something they genuinely like.

Had he said something more specific about it or given you critique, that would've been something to be proud of.

Not intentionally shitting on you or your art.

>> No.2136318

You do realize KJG doesn't speak any English, so everything has to go through a translator and is a bit awkward and difficult to get technical information about art across. He probably just said a couple words that translated easily or maybe just gave a thumbs up or something. That being said, from what I've seen of his personality, he's a super nice guy who would probably compliment any art he sees and be very encouraging.

That's the point. Being proud that an amazing professional artist told you he likes your art during a 2 minute talk you had at a convention or workshop is stupid. There's no way he'd insult a fan's art in such a casual meet-and-greet situation even if he absolutely hated what he saw.

Imagine being Miles Johnston at that convention and having to be all like “damn, Maciej Kuciara, you painting' fine, all sexy with your tight layer masking and horrific photobashed EVA face. I would totally have sex with your art, both my self-portraits and the real me." when all he really wants to do is sketch another 16 year old in his hotel room. Like seriously imagine having to be Miles and not only sit in that chair while Maciej Kuciara flaunts his disgusting body of work in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing the jpg artefacts and leathery phototexturing, and just sit there, workshop after workshop, hour after hour, while he perfected Showtime. Not only having to tolerate its monstrous fucking tracing but his haughty attitude as everyone on site tells him he's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, MACIEJ KUCIARA PAINTS LIKE *THAT*?? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch him paint women with mannish fucking gremlin faces contorting into types of grimaces you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been fucking nothing but a healthy diet of slappers and later alleged life-drawing models for your ENTIRE CAREER coming straight out of the boonies in Great Britain. You've never even seen anything this fucking disgusting before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's breaking out on his dimpled stylus as he sketches over photos of women writhing suggestively at you, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get paid to sit there and revel in his “Raphaelesque (for that is what he calls himself)” talent, the talent he worked so hard for with photo tracing in the previous months. And then the organiser calls for another podcast, and you know you could kill every single person in this room before the event security could put you down, but you sit there and endure, because you're fucking Miles. You're not going to lose your future art career over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.
