if you're going to "draw" digitally on a scan of analog paper at least make sure the scaling of the "paper" matches the size of the "marks" you're making digitally. At the moment the paper looks too "small" for the level of detail/thinness of lines you're getting with your mark-making.

Also avoid letting your marks look digital (jaggy eraser marks, smooth lines with unlimited opacity variation).

Just putting digital sketches on a paper texture looks cheap

As for the actual drawings, your line quality is super chicken-scratchy and noncommittal. You're using, like, 5 insecure-looking lines to express what one confident line could. Not sure if this is just how you draw or maybe a result of sketching digitally (I can't sketch for shit on a tablet - the disconnect is jarring - I'd rather sketch by hand and paint digitally)...

In the former case, I'd gather you're using digital as an "escape" for your shortcomings traditionally - using it as an excuse to make as many mistakes as you want and undo them away. I'd recommend practicing more traditionally - perhaps with a pen to encourage yourself from making unsure/noncommittal marks. You shouldn't just be making marks for the sake of making marks.

If it's the latter, I would just say draw traditionally then scan it.

Oh, and don't that the details of the face converge slightly in perspective. The lines you're placing features on are parallel to each other even though the heads are in perspective. It usually helps me to imagine the head as a rectangular box then push/pull details in/out in accordance with the perspective of the box. at the moment your perspective is isometric and makes the features on the far side appear large.

Not sure if I understand what you mean, why I would I want to show off the paper texture?

>Just putting digital sketches on a paper texture looks cheap
Is that what everyone else thinks?

I'm aware my lines aren't great because I don't practice enough, that was my first practice sketch after 2 weeks of playing Witcher 3

>Not sure if I understand what you mean, why I would I want to show off the paper texture?
You're treating the paper texture as just a background you can throw down at any size or resolution in relation to the sketches you put on top of it and it's resulting in it looking very disingenuous and obviously digital... in which case I'd say why even put the texture there? It's not emulating reality, it's just an arbitrary, poorly scaled texture you through behind your sketch.

Maybe "resolution" would be a better word to describe what I'm trying to describe - you're using a scan of a very small portion of paper as a background for a sketch that would easily take up a whole page of paper. I can tell this because of the scale of the details. It looks unconvincing because there's not a medium I can think that would create marks that accurately on such a small surface area.

In other words, the objects you're trying to present as a unified piece (paper texture and sketches) appear to be different sizes, which creates a disconnect and detracts from the believability of it looking like an analog sketch... not that digital sketches are bad but the arbitrary paper texture is distracting if you're not going to incorporate it believably.

>You tell me if my traditional lines look any better
Naw, your traditional exhibits the same issues, honestly.

Also if you're going to crosshatch, don't just scribble all over the place. Use the cross-hatching to "wrap" around the form and create depth (pic related).

The hatching your currently using just flattens your image and looks unplanned.

the faces look good, although the older woman's face is a bit skewed (especially the cheeks) but i think your main problem here is hair. you're sort of drawing it as one big mass, which i suppose is fine if you're focusing on the face, but is still worth mentioning. here's a good thing about drawing hair: http://gurneyjourney.blogspot(apparently this is spam).co.uk/2008/04/hair-ribbon-secret.html

Thanks! These are just studies really, so aren't anything special. If you google the filenames you can find the artists who I copied to learn from. I don't think I deserve much credit for them. If you want to see my "creative" work, then you can see a little bit of stuff here: http://andrewsonea.tumblr.com/

My actual website has more finished pieces than my tumblr, but all the recent stuff is in password protected sections because of NDAs. As for inspiration, I guess I am inspired mostly by other artists as well as things I see outside in nature, like I really enjoy taking mental notes of lighting and colour and stuff when I go on walks. I just turned 22, and have been painting for about 5.5 years with a few breaks in the middle (longest was around 8 months). Hope that answers your questions...

I think it is approaching something fantastic but the first impression I got was that it looked incomplete.

Ways I think it could be improved:
- Make the white wisps of hair blend more into the rest of the hair
- Refine the hair and ears
- Put some indication of a nose, even if stylized, just a blank space looks strange
- Right now the composition is such that the eyes go straight to the face because the top part lacks anything interesting. How about adding some details near the top of the image that guide the eyes in a pleasing way (such as waves of hair) until they reach the face
- It's a floating head and I think that's why it looks so incomplete to me. Maybe some faint indication of the rest of her?
- This is minor but her eyelashes look strange, like porcupine quills.

There are MANY things I love about it:
- eye pupils are gorgeous
- lovely BG
- beautiful color on the lips
- subtle flower shaped eyeshadow
- delicate details on the tearducts, stitches (I think this kind of delicate detail is what you can carry over into the hair)

While I agree with you that a mix is usually ideal, I agree with the other anon within the context of hte image he is referring to. The image he was critiquing was done with an emphasis on a blocky construction rather than a naturalistic approach, and as such it feels very artificial and doll-like. The forms they are using are more akin to the way you should think about the body, not the way you the body actually looks or how you should draw it.

Do you ever practice things besides faces? Would be good to practice design as well.

And for the faces I think they still feel pretty generic and can use more character/individuality. Use more ref to get more distinctive features, look up actors or whatever to help with this.

Firstly, pulling off black lines is very hard if you are going to paint.
Secondly, yes, knowledge that will make your lines look good can be acquired. There are notions specific to it such as lineweight. Don't just do lines randomly, they will have different hardness and thickness depending on what you want to achieve and convey. Two things that can help you improve lines are studying how edges work, and studying principles of composition. Arthur Wesley Dow's book on composition focuses on linework a lot and provides line exercises. Personally it made the quality of my lines improve drastically. Looking at good mangaka and comic artists' linework and trying to visualize their thought and work process obviously helps. I'd recommend studying form and figure before you get to specifics such as lines, though. Good luck.

Values seems pretty okay to me but i think it lacks hue and saturation variation. It looks kinda monochrome while theres different areas of colour on your face. Like area around mouth tend to be a bit blue-ish, red cheeks etc. Also it feels like it has warm shadows and as warm lights. When it dries out you can glaze some cool colours over. choose pictures with a wider range of values, more prominent forms, contrasts, interesting light settings, different materials which all interact w light differently so the values are going to be rendered differently, etc, you get the main idea, this is just a some flat photoshopped filtered photograph im puzzled as to why you would even want to draw that, why did you choose it

from my experience, studying photos with subtle value changes is really challenging.

If you're really tryhard about it you will learn A LOT of soft / lost edge control and train your eye to render form within a small range of value AND actually see subtle value changes. I think this might be immensely useful for rendering within shadows and light of stuff that has more prominent lighting setups.

Yes, dramatic lighting is cool, but studying that stuff has its place too imho.

pic related is the one I've did, though I'm not really satisfied with it

What is this character for? Why does she have that giant robot arm? I feel like you can think through it a bit more as a concept.

Take a look at this similar design by Trevor Claxton:
https://cdn.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/000/113/833/large/trevor-claxton-slothb13.jpg?1403686575

Right away I see a few key differences between it and yours:
-since the robotics probably weigh hundreds of pounds, his girl has some exoskeleton legs as well as a wider stance to support it all
-rather than just making it a big arm (why would you need that?) he has it be a knife, and then she holds a smaller knife control in her hand which shows that the arm is controlled by her regular arm, like it mirrors the movements. I think this is a cool detail that shows something about it. You don't have anything showing how she control it.
-the outfit and design are all very military looking, like it shows the purpose--she is gonna get in combat situations. Her face and body language and colours and then the giant knife and bullet belt thing show this. Yours is just standing in a reserved pose with a blank expression. Maybe you can make it like for construction or something. Have her outfit be that of a worker, and she uses that robot arm to move giant pieces beams of metal and carry things or whatever. She can have a hardhat and a tool kit. Doesn't have to be that, but she needs a purpose.
-in his there is the big battery looking this that counterbalances it. Yours has this too sorta, but I like how his is a simple cylinder so looks like it houses the energy source. Yours has some strange forms in it that hints at a function but this function isn't clear.

Think a bit more about function first, then you can focus on cool shape language stuff.

>> No.2131766

>>2131755
Also I forgot to mention it generally is a bad idea to have a large part of hte design cover up other areas, like you have the robot arm cover where her torso and legs meet, and this is a pretty important area as it shows things like how long the shirt is, whether it is tucked or not, if there are belts etc. You also have her normal arms crossed and covered, so you can't see her hands and her shirt too well (it is further covered by long hair, which will probably get caught in the robotics now that I think about it). But yeah, her silhouette is pretty bad. It looks like she has no regular arms, and the main arm blocks her body.

My google-fu is failing me at the moment, but there is a great infographic I think from like old disney animators. It showed I think bugs bunny, and him holding some object out in various poses. And they showed how the silhouette of him really changed how well the image reads. So having him hold it directly in front isn't good, having hold it to the side is better, and having him hold it to the side and in a way that the silhouette of the object is clear is the best.

Recognizable characters so good job on that. It's obvious that they are meant to be the same person as well.

Crit- You should revisit those faces specifically the top left. The mouth needs work, I don't think it can get into that position given the angle of the viewer. They eyes seem pretty flat, and possibly spaced too far apart. Push your shading more. The right cheek of that same figure is just one flat color. Where's the light coming from? It's pretty unclear right now, there are no real darks in the piece at the moment.

Keep at it.

It's not the hard truth it's just an opinion. There is no objective way to say whether or not your progress is fine, because everyone progress differently and at different paces. I know people who've drawn off and on for more than 2 years and aren't that good, I know someone who went from barely drawing to hired professional in 2 years. There's no reason for them to bother arguing the semantics of how you feel about your progress other than to make you feel bad, it doesn't give any actual information you can use to improve. It's like you said "hey I suck but what's wrong in this pic" and they say "yeah you do suck, bye". Useless. Hello /ic/,

This is my first time in this board. I'd like to take up drawing (in paper). I've drawn things in the past, and as a child i was told i was good at it. However, in my recent attempts i found that i always get frustrated (as i want everything to be perfect) and always leave the drawing unfinished.

The best advice I can give is to keep at it. The more you do it the better you'll get. I suggest starting with small less detailed drawings, sketches and the like. That way you won't feel that they're unfinished, just precursors to something bigger.

dpi doesn't matter when viewing it online really. Just adjust the pixel size. You can also do a Save For Web thing if you want, though I don't bother. i understand, but i really think that, in a mysterious way, the toxicity its what keeps it from turning into a hugbox, and the fact that you have to dodge or argue with shitposters make you more passionate about making something serious, idk if im being clear enough, what i think is that art needs chaos and dumbness to keep going on.

I'm sure that works to motivate some people, in fact when I was younger there were a good number of times I worked harder to spite someone who told me I couldn't do something. I'm older now and the volume of those kinds of attacks here are overwhelming for me. I'm self motivated enough and need a quieter place. It's not that I don't think this place should exist, but it doesn't work for everyone and those people need a place too.
Besides the last straw for me is the whole site is experiencing a massive influx of pedophilia and I really don't want to see that shit.

To me, the value of this place is mostly anonymity. Not that I'm afraid to show my shit, but any time I critique someone on forums like ca, I think about how that will reflect on me, my career and what people think of my art.
Pretty much the opposite feeling of what >>2132968 said, I'll spend my time looking for "good things" in crappy drawings, just so that I don't look like a grumpy basher who's never pleased with anything.

Pretty pleased with how it turned out, considering how shaky my hand was.

People that can't take raw comments, generally too young to be around when forums like eatpoo existed.

Well, I have used one of the previous drawings and passed it to SAI.

I did my best, but somebody tell me if I am in the right way

No you're not, you're in the old thread and there's nobody here. Move it already.

Be more confident with your lines. You have a nice style that could be refined.
