I used to really like Anthony Jones but his somewhat recent opinions on representation in design really soured me. I unfollowed/unfriended him because I really don't want to support someone so established in the industry seeding such toxic ideas. It's already bad enough that he's selling his poison as "sage advice" and "experienced knowledge," if I can do anything to not be a part of it, I will.

As for the group itself, all these "concept artist" groups are really fucking stupid. I understand it from a business perspective on their behalf and probably would do the same given the opportunity but it wouldn't make it any less dumb and self-serving.

love him as a person, never liked his work though. nothing special or interesting about it. feels like he once was really passionate but can barely stand doing art anymore.

this seems to happen a lot with guys who never quite reach the top of the industry. eventually they sort of burn out and start trying to go the entrepeneurial route. feng is the exception i guess, since he was (is?) pretty much at the top. also i don't know if shaddy was really at the top but he seems like one of those guys who now rather use their connections and fame to get work, and outsource it to cheap chump wannabes who can still deliver some level of quality. so basically he 'runs a studio' aka is an outsourcing whipcracker.

I also don't really think what he does is 'concept art.' He sells it as such but it's really just illustration (which has its own merit, but I don't like people being disingenuous about what they are or what they're selling). There's no real process/research/ideation to his work, it's just moody illustrations.

Good moody illustrations but I wouldn't want him to tech me how to think or create an idea bc frankly I don't think his ideas are all that great.

Watching his ADvanced design tips video series was actually pretty informative and I feel they're a great set of guidelines for a beginner to begin to express his ideas through design before moving on to explore.
