2117683 No.2117683 [Reply] [Original]

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2107844

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Hello. Please tell me what is wrong with this ANATOMICALLY. I know the lines are shakey and a bit uneven( It's a sketch and I'm using a touchpad. Not a tablet or a mouse.Kill me.)

Please ignore the right hand. I am not finished with it and I am going to start making a reference tomorrow for it.

Any other critique is welcome, but be aware that I know of the shaky lines and the thinness of the lines ( add lineweight!) I am only going to add lineweight when the drawing is correct.

don't worry too much about it. just make sure your proportions are correct and the angle is consistent through the entire drawing.
and it's probably fine to draw (complicated) symbols every now and then, as long as the above conditions are met. in the end, those things you call symbols are just the shapes that you know the best. you shouldn't avoid them. they are what make your style.

There's lots of movement which looks cool, it's just that your anatomy/perspective isn't fluid enough to match it. From the shoulders up, she's facing forward, but her chest is facing 3/4 right, and then her ass is facing left/out. In the red line I tried pushing her right (or left?) arm back, because she has this awkward movement where both of her arms are going forward. Remember that the pectoral muscle (where boobs are) sort of connect with the deltoid muscle (shoulder muscle). Her butt is really low, and if that giant mass isn't dress, and is actually her legs, try to imagine how weird it looks with her slim upper body and fat lower body. I wasn't really sure what you were going for, so I just drew a twisting motion with the lower body, that at least gives you an idea anatomically what it should look like.

Generally you should follow this flowchart

>1. Attempt to draw something from imagination
>2. Horribly fuck it up, or in the event that you aren't a complete scrub find something that needs more work
>3. Find examples/references of what you need work on, draw those and practice
>4. Use new found knowledge to deshitify your previous drawing
>5. Marvel at all this fucking progress.

Using references before drawing is good when you're designing something and need a launching point, less good if you're using them as a crutch because you're too much of a pussy to dive right in and draw.

Generally at least. Art is something where you can make all the goddamn rules you want but you will find reasons and times to break every last one.

try constructing the head as a box in perspective, then place a second box on the front for the nose. When you see that, you'll realise how badly you skewed the nose to the right. the left eye is also too wide, it should be turning away from us but it actually looks wider than the one facing us. Basically, you have to learn perspective and then apply it to your work.

A large part of it was luck, and a bigger part is that she knew what to do with it.
Ignoring /ic/'s hate hard on for her, she's actually pretty good, people noticed her, and she knows how to keep people interested and paying her more money. A large part of that is her tutorials she releases to people who pay enough.

I mean say what you want, but she is pretty amazing in both regards. She knows how to market herself, and that's the best trait an artist can have.

I was mostly referring to the subsection of women who kinda exploit pathetic guys into donating. I only assumed she was guilty of this due to the subpar quality of her art, and the fact that her art doesn't seem like the kind of stuff that most guys would be interested in looking at, much less paying for.

I didn't mean I personally think its gay, but its one of those things that people say as a girl hobby until you're professional. Cooking and tailoring isn't gay either, but unless you're professional level at it people think its an effeminate hobby.

You fucking imbecile. We're on an anonymous board for a reason, so that artists can criticize things without having it connected to their person. How the fuck do you not understand this?
Furthermore, actually showing your art in a discussion where people are arguing will result in people shitting on the art regardless of the quality, because they see the art as an extension of you.

The fact that you think sakimichan is good, actually says far more about you than anything else. She really isn't good. There are some aspects of her art that kinda works on a commercial basis, such as the faces and the rendering, but overall she's a deeply flawed artists, and any semi-experienced artist will immediately take notice of many mistakes.
The Link picture that the mods deleted earlier is a prime example.

I've never encountered this mentality to be honest. It's mostly seen as a positive thing here. Again, the only exception would be a guy who takes the role of a housewive and is expected to cook for his wife and kids.

I suppose it has to do with the mentality behind cooking that men have. In my experience, they're more experimental and almost see it as a challenge to always try new things and make complex food. They almost break it down to a science.
I also think Gordon Ramsay has given cooking a more masculine image, as he's about as far from feminine as its possible to get.

this is probably your biggest head yet. you really need to decide on your proportions.
in that image almost the entire upper body is one head tall.

i had similar problems before. try to decide on a place for these landmarks (think in terms of heads): pit of the neck, solar plexus (nipples are around here), end of the ribcage.

i find that you tend to make the arms longer to not make the head seem as big, but that seems like a patchwork solution, it's not enough. you should adjust the points mentioned above too. especially the length of the neck can change a lot.

I feel like the black lines don't really work well since nothing else on your image has lines, but they're still necessary to preserve the shapes on your critters. I feel like softening them up with a different color would keep the cleanliness without them looking out of place as they are.

Depends what you consider decent and what you mean as commissions, for example you have saki and she makes plenty of money off other things that aren't commissions exactly, but its not porn. There's plenty of comic artists that aren't comic book artists that make decent money off it.
If you mean solely commissions its hard but doable, its easier just to get an actual job.

although on lighting (assuming its coming from the right girl's hair) isn't consistent on the girl on the left. you'll notice her left side is dark and right side is lit up even though the girl on the left is behind her, there is also the issue of the shadows on her helmet going backwards instead of away from the lightsource.
this assumes the lighting is coming from the other girl though so if its not you can feel free to ignore me.
