Here's what is generally suggested anon. I shall attempt to show the process to go along with this. I should note before hand that I am a pleb and my skills are shitty, do not take this as my own advice, it is the advice I have been given by those much better than me.

Start- Examine the pose, try to get an idea of everything. Example- observe she's leaning back, so her chest and ribs should be pushed out farther than her head and shoulders. There is a curve to her pose starting from her head it goes to the left and then turns back and heads to the right as her legs leave the frame.

Do a gesture next. It may take several attempts to get it right. Do not decide that your first attempt was good enough, keep them loose and remember to exaggerate! There is a tendency to straighten things out, we do not want this if we want the pose to feel alive.

Once you find a decent gesture start to refine it with actual forms. Begin to lightly lay in forms of the major components of the body, the chest, the hips, the head and neck, then the arms and legs.

After that you should begin to define a light source and potentially start shading / coloring. Do this as roughly and with the largest brushes you can.

Remember do not get caught up in details, details come last, work big with general shapes and SLOWLY refine them down to something better. Remember to constantly check your reference and think about what you are doing. Don't just try to draw what you see try to draw and understand what is going on with the pose and the anatomy that makes it possible.

Pictures forth coming, again they will not be very good, but in an effort to better myself and help the board I will gladly expose myself to ridicule.

my question was more to do with painting though, while i know i still suck at drawing im very interested in painting so im trying to learn both, the person who taught me what little i know never started with lines, they painted blocks of colours and stuff and rarely actually drew lines, i'm also wondering how i should get started with painting it, should i use a big solid colour first and then start shading it and colour it eventually or do what i did in pic related and just fail

The softness of the rendering is making her look really rubbery, and you've put too many shadows in the face.

I would have picked out certain areas to sharpen ie make the blending more abrupt and less airbrushed

Looks pretty good, except the eyes and mouth look pasted on. Facial features might be too small, also.

>>2111022
I think you need to start again with the drawing, the pose is quite a bit off. Mainly, she's leaning to our left, but also remember that the plane of her body starting above her breasts is going up and back: It's reading flat right now and her right shoulder is not being pushed back enough. I would also say her head is too big and tall. Lastly, I would resolve the drawing a bit more before starting to paint, especially in the hands and face.

Resize your image, and rotate it.

Head is too small, arms are too large. You aren't getting enough bend in the pose, you straightened it out a bit. There is a twist occurring between the ribcage and the pelvis, but it doesn't come through in your sketch. I'd say try again, maybe a few more times. You are off to a good start but don't settle for this as your foundation to begin working on a final piece.

work 4x as large so your drawing can actually function
if you're going to use line, use it to describe the internal structure as well as the outline (which honestly I think you should stay away from)
measure things against eachother. The space from shoulder to elbow against the span of the shoulders, the width of the hip against the height of the head. Everything should relate to everything.

when you're hatching make your strokes go along the surface of the thing you're describing. Like her left tit looks super flat because you're circling around it in a 2D manner.
Also focus more on big forms before you dive too deep, right now your stomach is a bit messy and shows no signs of protrusion. My suggestion to you is to start drawing from what you KNOW and it's evident in the chest area that are largely drawing what you SEE. Details and hue variations are whatever but if you lose sight the big picture (like egg shape for ribcage, cylinder for arms, her left arm looks poopy) it will fall apart.

I have a suggestion for an exercise that could help you learn even more from this drawing. Since you did it digitally, I suggest lowering the opacity and doing a quick one-over with some new, cleaner lines on a new layer. They don't have to be perfect, just definitive and clear. I wouldn't suggest spending more then 10 min doing it either, because it's just to help you see your own drawing better. Then, delete or hide the sketch layer, and bam, you'll better see your mistakes. After you do that, look carefully at it, look at angles, proportions, and relationships of the pic and look at what you drew. Use a pen or something to measure distances (collarbone to nipple, nipple to arm etc) and angles to see where you were off. Ask things like 'what angle does the bottom of the breasts have with each other? What shapes are the negative spaces between her arms? Angles of the arms? How much does the body twist?' etc. If you're having a hard time seeing them, copy-pasta your lines onto the ref, and you'll see them clear as day. Then try to draw it again fresh.

And I wouldn't worry too much about the face, tbh. Likeness is pretty tricky, and it's not necessary at your current stage. Redrawing something can seem boring or tedious, but it's a really great way to learn from your mistakes and improve. Good luck.

no i don't really have any formulas like that, sorry. i just try to get the colors and values right. i don't really think in terms of warm or cool when im painting. i think those terms are convenient for analysis but i personally always found them confusing when trying to make decisions about color. i just think about the color makeup of the lightsources, and if you later want to analyze them then they naturally break down into relative warms or cools anyway if you did it right.

Honestly, what I've from experience more than anything else is that it doesn't fucking matter. As long as you get pen down on paper, or the tablet equivalent, you've gotten somewhere. Sometimes I'll start with a line sketch so I can feel the rhythm out and go crazy in that direction, other times I'll just get grey, make the silhouette, clipping mask above or lock transparency, and throw in the darks. Above all else, just go and attack it somehow. You'll learn more in that process than by reading.

You a musician by any chance? My hand cramps up extremely quickly when I draw, and even massaging it only barely helps.

Try massaging the areas marked by an X in my pic related, they tend to be the root cause of a lot of hand cramps. I like to do this
>Lie on ground or find flat surface
>Put ball down
>Bend arm, putting palm flat down (thumb pointing to me) onto the ball so that its putting pressure on the area.
>Use your other arm + head for more pressure, roll it back and forth along the arm
If you find a spot that has kind of a "good hurt" to it, hang around there for a little bit. Come back to it a few times a day for a minute or two at a time. Helped a lot when my hand cramped up playing guitar and drawing.

He's right, art is very time consuming and can be difficult at times. It requires a lot hard knowledge that you get from practicing. You don't get good over night. Its like anyother job or hobby, take a lot of time and effoet to learn how to do it right and even more time to troubleshoot. Take learning perspective I knew a guy Daniel McGaowan took him years before he could just eye perspective and he may still need to fix. The difference between art and a job like being a lawyer is your medium. If you can concince a jury you are half way there.

Nice job! The brushstrokes on the face though are all around the exact same size. Try getting a bit more variation in there. You can probably simplify some strokes together into one big stroke, and others you can break up with an even smaller brush. It will help build more variety into it and make it much more interesting as well as read more clearly and have better form. Careful of a few strokes that are like, mini rectangles there, just very harsh. All four sides are super sharp. They stick out oddly and flatten the image.

Work in gray scale first, you need to know your values before your hues. Working on lighting, directional light and reflective especially, will get you over mountains that many fail to climb. Post your linework, you might not be as good as you think you are, but that's fine. It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong, though.

You can see the stages I went through in this drawing. First a few quick lines to get the posture and then I built the frame and set the tilt of the head, chest and waist. The 1st one on the upper left. Then I start with the face and outline the hair, and try to establish the form. I left my skeleton in for the first several drawings until I felt confident I could erase all my reference lines. In the bottom row I started with the color and vine charcoal. I used a napkin to smudge and it softens as well. I added yellow ochre, pink and blended those areas. Finally I added my lines to add emphasis to the form. Some things I didn't do but I could have was to use my eraser to add highlights, and it would help to add the reflective light on the left inner arm.

Good exercise, fun!

It's like you spent some time learning the basics of how to separate your lights and darks and throw in a core shadow to turn the form...but you never spent the time to learn actual structure. I think you should stop with the charcoal and smudging and whatnot for now, and go back to basic shape observation, and then move onto construction and anatomy and interlocking forms. Do your Vilppu and Bridgman studies anon, it will make your art 100x stronger.

Lol, I've gotten the exact opposite C&C on this board from a similar drawing. I was told that I was spending too much time worrying about anatomy and construction and not enough time drawing what is in front of me.
