Here's a few months old one I did based on a reference. It's nothing special, but considering I'm still really new to this I was satisfied enough with the end results and it served as a decent confidence boost.

Had I gone further, I would've started putting a little more attention into the environment, but the idea was to try out a style different than how I normally work. In that regard, it was mildly successful.

It loses all of its energy after clean up. I have this problem too when cleaning up, everything becomes so stiff and lifeless.

Aim to preserve as much of the info in the original sketch as possible. The goal in the cleanup process should be to streamline and compress and state more elegantly but never to discard information. Pic related. I'll attach another after this for comparison

Don't focus on speed, that will probably distract you and keep you from focusing on more important stuff. In fact, take your time and focus on the quality of your lines. Keep in mind that although you may be going over the original sketch, you are not supposed to be 'tracing'. You are drawing and your mind is fully engaged and reacting to the drawing at all times. The original sketch is only a base. You are creating a whole new drawing on top of it.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is line quality. Here is something that may be helpful to get you into that mentality of creating high quality lines and avoid 'lazy lines'

The determination to stick to the zigzag composition is making the positions of the characters suffer, it looks more like a flowy interpretive dance than a fight with strong movements.
Especially the furthest away fighter's pose with balletic leg positioning and awkward front arm.
Also the stabby guy doesn't even look like he's really holding onto his sword.

I love the tea guy in the back though.

Yeah, plus he didn't even stick with the composition as the image progressed. He kept the awkward poses, but changed the the values and shapes, so the whole flow of the composition was gone in the end anyway.
