I really like your style. It's a lot like what I try to do, but I can't into facial structure, so all I can ever do, is like super over-exaggerated cartoons.

I can, however, tell you that this would look great, with a calligraphied outline, dark, thinner, and cleaner inner lines, and a bit more buldge in the eyes.

Yeah digital is fairly new to me. But I also hate the vast majority of the digital artwork I see and I have no interest in making digital art that looks like that. Most of it looks slick or overly stylized. But that's because it's primarily used by illustrators.

I like using photos in paintings. Just doing straight up painting somehow feels like you're battling against photography. In a way your implying the two are opposites when you do that. But if you have the two mixed coinciding with each other, it seems less like your trying to make some sort of statement about how the old way is better, and modern technology is inferior. Hopefully that makes sense.

Plus it's just practical, In an area that doesn't really matter to you, why paint it when you could use a camera?

Also, have you ever experienced color changing when you upload an image to this site? The color got sucked out of it when I posted it both times. It made everything duller and brown. Does it do that to all pictures, or is there something I'm doing wrong on my end like a file type error or something. It just makes the hues of the picture look like mud.

Never had that issue. Might be because the background colour of this board is a sorta tan colour, so your painting looks a bit different on that than say a black background or whatever you have it set to in photoshop.

Anyways, your image is muddy mroe because of hte values and the way you apinted with transparent strokes that create a lot of overlapping marks and make hte values all patchy and inconsistent.

I did a quick paintover, I just did like 5 minutes of smudge tool and a bit of painting on top of that. I tried to remove that texture you created and also make some shadows slightly darker.

I decided to do another digital self-portrait because I was feeling competitive, plus I wanted to try out some new things I've learned lately.
I probably put in 3 or 4 hours this evening, I'll finish it tomorrow.

1. Value wise, there isn't a lot of light or dark, lots of midtone, and you're defining the form in a vague way, thus everything looks blobby.

2. The colouring is really dull, makes your flesh look dead.

3. The brushwork is really the biggest problem: just the same round transparent brush laboriously and unthinkingly being applied to the painting. Your skin has way too much of this ugly texture: try simplifying the value range, breaking the image into about 5 tones with some blended transitions here and there.

4. Using a photographic background makes all the errors stick out more than they normally would.

I started this today but it's not finished yet. I've been getting so much crap from ppl on the first one, hopefully this more traditional painting will validate what I was doing before for you guys. I was painting it like that intentionally but you're grading it with a criteria that doesn't apply to it. If you want to critique my work on a classical realistic basis, grade this one. Really just the nose is finished, I haven't finished painting the mouth and left eye, and obviously my hair and forehead needs completed. It's also painted from a mirror. Unfortunately, you don't get to decide the criteria your work is graded upon, that's up to the viewer.

Secondly, don't assume I'm a common ic fag who only likes optical realism, I'm grading it based on how shitty or good it looks to me: there's plenty of impressive non realistic work out there.

Finally, this new painting is not much closer to being 'classical realistic', you're still abusing those brushes and getting shitty textures. You're still laboriously over rendering so that every crease and and fold of your face is exaggerated. And you're still getting used to drawing accurately with a tablet.

You won't get anything useful posting on a critique board if your only response to critique is, "hey, you can't critique it that way, that's not what I wanted."

It's okay. Don't be so butthurt: your traditional drawings are still decent! Maybe stick with that!

People were continually critiquing the texture of the skin which was an effect I was intentionally aiming for. I wasn't trying to make it beautifully blended, I wanted it to look in a way ugly.

Here's day two on my current selfportrait. If you can do better please do post. I'm vaguely thinking about dutch golden age portraits and that's what my color palette is roughly based on. An underpainting in umber, cool neutral greens for cool areas, and warm highlights.

Because it's a way bigger challenge you'll learn more. I know the analogy is a little silly, but it's like lifting a big weight or a small one. You'll progress faster if you challenge yourself more. I could draw an almost photorealistic portrait from a photo in middle school. It took me years of painting all the time to be able to paint a self-portrait very realistically from a mirror.

Also, all mirror self-portraits have the same intense, psychothic, direct gaze that you can avoid so easily by using a cheap camera to get a really true-to-yourself portrait

Its like you are using this unrealistic shade of blue but everything else is realistic so it feels off. I think you can experiment with some unexpected colors to offset that.

I had to do a SP for the school art show, and some clumsy cunt spilled paint thinner all over it a week before. I had been working on it for 6 months.
Anyway, I had to produce something in a week, and I pulled this out of my ass about one day before the show.
I did it in crayon in two hours, and since my exhibition was surrounded by dumbasses who don't try for shit, everybody thought my SP was amazing. Give me another opinion because I'm surrounded by yes-men.
