A few things:

-be mindful of chicken scratch lines. You do ten lines for every one that you genuinely need. Part of this is working digitally, at your level you should work more with a pencil and paper.

- you should practice some construction instead of just 2d shapes

-don't use anatomical 3d models like that, use photos of actual people

First, thanks for replying.

The chicken scratch lines is because I was sketch, when it's the final line, I pay attention to the lineart.

I used stick figure construction before drawing the fail 2D shapes, sorry for not posting before, I assumed people would know.

I don't like this new one. Wasn't the whole idea about the dynamic angle, how the viewer feels like he's right in the water looking on at this scene? If you want to go the simple graphic route, that's cool, but then the lack of dynamic angle has to be balanced out with something else, e.g. fuller and more dynamic shapes/masses/textures/etc.

well the whole idea is "fishing with a sushi roll". If that idea isn't conveyed well, which feedback suggested it wasn't, I think this one makes it much clearer.

Composition and fancy effects are nice, but if I wasn't pulling off what I wanted with clarity I can give that stuff up.

Ok I admit I had no idea that was the concept. It's much clearer now though.

But the issues I mentioned still remain, which is that there is a lack of dynamics in the picture. It's very boring. Everywhere I look there is a lack of "oomph". Look at the clouds and mountains, they are nondescript. The sushi idea is interesting but that alone can't hold my attention.

The chef is not attractive, might sound silly but this kind of thing is important. Visually he has to capture my attention, I'm not saying he has to look like a model. Put some unique details on him, don't make it an obligation to look at him, just make it so that one can't help but look.

The focal point (sushi) being so close to the edge strikes me as an odd choice.
I like your choice of colors. Sorry if this is all over the place, I'm on mobile.

The lack of dynamics is something I need to work on, but I was exploring that in the first picture and it came out kind of a mess.

It's hard incorporating concepts into a compositionally interesting illustration. But it's worth a shot every once in a while.

I'm also not great at photoshop in general I usually just work traditionally so I need to get used to the medium and how to use layers and things other than the hard round brush.

As for the chef that doesn't really bother me. He's just supposed to look asian, in an asian art style.

The focal point being far away I fixed in this. Tried to put it more towards the middle and cropped a large part of the right side off of it.

I'm moving onto a new piece now that could hopefully be more dynamic. If not dynamic than just an interesting art style. It's something of a children's illustration. I could try some softer brushes and less generic character design with it.

Lots of perspective + anatomy issues. A couple of obvious ones: the left arm is too small, particularly the proximal half, and the way the shoulder girdle is fitted onto the thoracic cage is wrong (the clavicles look totally disconnected from the shoulders.) I think it's the finger size? Each segment of the fingers seem to stay the same 'thickness' as they get smaller and smaller, resulting in a 'fatter' hand.

I had to look at it for a while to really notice it though, so it's definitely not a huge "deal breaker" problem.

Do you mean perspective (It's broken, since the roof goes to a vanishing points on far left, instead of to the far right, which I didn't create), or shading?

At least it was me and not someone else. Jokes aside, reddit is a great place for an artist. If they like your piece, a lot of people will see it. Currently 625,000 views and still accumulating 20,000 per hour. And I'm not talking about some financial gain. I have a stable job and draw as a hobby. It's just feels really nice when you know that a lot of people saw your thing. Of course, you get some money related propositions with that, too.

So, I sketched a thing. I'm not sure what to think of it. Really new to this.

I can't draw human heads proportionaly yet, so the head is the only character I've ever actually practiced.

Anyways, any comments/criticisms of the overall form would be nice, and If anyone would be willing to redline the body that would be fantastic and it would be very appreciated.

this is a very slow, difficult way to learn how to draw.

Guys, I usually play guitar/write lyrics but I've always wanted to learn. I just want some kind of system in the beginning, like with the guitar you learn some chords and theory and you can create start writing some basic melody. >>2108520
it's not that i wouldn't like to do something like this, but i think that when you make tutorials or give people advice that you have a really big responsibility not to lead people astray and that's usually what happens when you talk about rules or cookie cutter solutions to problems. the kind of advice that fits into a neat little package is almost always going to make a lot of compromises with the truth and i dont believe in that. either way, i think the most important things to pay attention to by far are simply the interaction of light (and its color components) and form and making sure that your color relationships and value relationships are consistent throughout the picture

You're using a pretty dead (even) line, which can work, but it's really heavy in the face. Taking a lot of those marks out of the face would help a lot. Issues and such aside, I actually like the dead lines on the armor.

Anatomy and general armor design needs work though. Study both more. And don't phone in your backgrounds -- the more you avoid them, the more it'll be a weakness and you'll have to play tons of catch-up to get them up to par.

You should do some studies of the eye socket/brow. Like all your eyebrows and the general structure in that area look the same on each one. There's quite a bit of variation that can occur within eyebrows and the structure near the eye, so you should try to build up your visual library of this area so you can play with it more and get the variation needed for different characters. It will really help you avoid same-face issues.

Well your lines are pretty messy. Almost everything looks covered in fur. Try practicing the quality of your lines first. Don't use lined paper.

Your drawing needs work especially the faces, you can brush up on everything pretty much. Nothing that xan't be done with practice. I gotta say I'm impressed by your shape design (eg the dragon's tail), which I think is more advanced than your drawing skills for now.

been trying to find "muh-style" lately.

>My personal approach to coloring is :
>1. Colorize everything on it's true color.
>2. Brighten with screen layer.
>3. Darken with multiply layer.

So basically there's 3 layers. It kinda works on general situations, But it seems not working on high contrast environment. Pic I posted is example of my obstacle.

I acknowledge there is various way to colorize certain things, but I really like to use this method. And the problem is, whether it's screen layer or multiply layer, It just doesn't look right.
Well, It does get better when I use wide range of color in screen/multiply layer. But as I understand, If light source is yellow, then every surface toward it has to be tinted yellow. So in theory, It has to be look right when i use screen/multiply layer per light source. But It is not. I really want to know why this happens

>> No.2109165

>> No.2109174

>>2109166
Well every layer type will modify the colours it goes over. Like it will affect the saturation and the value (there are a couple exceptions that won't change the value, but most do). Screen layers desaturate things and works best for adding cool/white light to things. If you want a warm light, try using a pale yellow on an overlay layer. That will add something akin to sunlight/incandescent, depending on what yellow you use. But try out a few different layer types, and try them at different strengths. I think all of them will saturate your colour except Exclusion and Screen, and Colour Dodge when it begins to blow out your lights (since at those brightnesses you can't have colour).

Realize though that no layer mode is perfect for modifying all the colours. If you know what you are doing then it can create a base, but you will want to manually tweak it on a normal layer afterwards.

You need to be much less careful about your art, If i have a face with a nose in the wrong place then I know my eyes and mouth and brows will be off, so just rub out the face, block in where things are, if they look right start to detail. but detail the piece as a whole and work into more detail after you have completed a pass.

As time has went on though I now practice more by drawing from life and painting, I forgot for a long time about my 'style' and slowly it has grown from nowhere but continuous practice. you will then draw quicker once more experienced and that speed is down to your ability to 'stylize' what you draw, your style is just how you quickly places down lines/value etc represent the form.

So practice and it will come!
