What's the point of tutorials?
They will only give you a shallow, quick overview of the issue at hand and are usually made by DA celebrities looking to promote their blogs.

Why not open up a figure drawing book instead of reading useless "HOW 2 DRAW HANDS" tutorials?

There are a lot of topics that are
- not complex enough to warrant buying or writing a book about them; a tutorial is fine
- too obscure to find in a book, esp. on figure-drawing. You won't find a chapter about how to draw waves or rocks in most figure drawing books.

Who the fuck learns how to draw a rock through a tutorial?
Fucking go outside and draw some fucking rocks, jesus christ. That's such a cancerous mentality.

Drawing rocks is not something trivial that you learn a pre-set algorithm for either. There's different kinds of rocks native to different areas of the planet and they can be drawn in a multitude of ways.

Do people really not want to study from life and would rather do with a collection of symbols other people have made for them?

>>2105586
It's not really about the rock as such. In the case of the rock, the issue is that you have an object that is extremely high in information density/detail. It has a million variations in value and hue. It has a million tiny geometric variations, from the largest scale (mountain ranges) to the microscopic scale.

The issue is not to find a rock and look at it, but to figure out how to represent this kind of information overload in your linework while preserving the likeness of the object (in this case, the rock.)

If you set a new beginner in front of a rock and ask them to draw the rock, they will not manage to produce a pleasing looking rock, no matter how many rocks you show them.

The issue is in the fundamental way to represent/abstract the detail. It's a method you can learn through the tutorial, and if you have, you can apply it to other stuff (treetops, landscapes, hair, ...), not just rocks.

Or, you know, maybe someone just wants some generic rocks in the background of their character design and doesn't give enough of a shit to go out and find an actual rock.

I do that but not usually with the green ones. Sometimes. It's basically "draw and envelope around the person and then refine" plus "what lines up with what else here?"

This is how barque plates are done, actually. Those lines, after you've got them down pretty accurately, are something you go through and refine.

It's not like it's the only way to draw so if you don't like it don't do it. It helps me and my classmates out a lot though. Hell, a lot of artists do this you just never really see those stages.
