How many of you don't plan on having a job related to art or illustration, ect; and instead just draw for the mere pleasure of drawing and creating shit?

a good portion of /ic/ is trying to git gud because an artist life is something they aspire to; but what about US, the peoples who browse /ic/ and draw just because it's fun and who like to learn new shit.

Lets discuss why do you like drawing and go on /ic/ or hand around the OC part of the internet.

i've been doing it solely as a hobby since i've started and do some small commission work on the side. about to take out a fuckhuge loan for game art school though.

>> No.2095527

Although I am practicing and studying art 10+ hours a day, I don't have any plans on making a career out of it. It's merely an insatiable passion.

So far it's still a hobby for me, a damn serious one. I don't plan on doing it as a job, but rather a very enjoyable "Plan B" just in case, but better if just hobby. I plan on tackling a big career about something else, the hardest part of it is deciding which career. That is actually a huge problem for me, I'm about to finish school and I still have no fucking idea what I'm going to do. I've been having the top grades in my class, and I really don't like being egocentric, but sitting down to study doesn't look like much of a problem compared to actually picking something I actually like more than "eh, I don't know, maybe". As I said, no idea yet.

Whatever, ranting about careers instead of art here.

wait, you like drawing more than pursuing other studies (at this point) and you'd prefer studying something else because it's easier for you?

I just moved from San Fran to Portland and don't have a job. However, I do have decent savings so I'm just gonna chill for a few months and focus on getting good. Before the move I worked from home, so there was a lot of time to be drawing then as well.

When I wake up, I literally start studying immediately. Tend to lose focus/burn out around evening time, but then make another study session push for a few hours after the sun sets. Dreaming about drawing is an every night occurrence.

>>2095556
why do you care about getting "that" good if it's not going to give you access to money?
aren't you already at a level where you can bring your ideas and creations to live and according to what you wanted them to look like?

>> No.2095563

Because I'm too much of a pussy to take the risk of trying to build an art career, whether that involves getting popular enough on the internet, or get an enjoyable art job where I live,or whatever. Like I said, art is Plan B, it's already something I study because it's really fun and I can be a big artist without a degree, maybe if I happen to be popular on the internet I would quit studying and dedicate my full power to art,

Also, I don't know if I "like" drawing more than other studies,I'm fascinated by many other things but I just can't seem to identify with any of the careers related to those awesome things,I can't look at someone and say "yeah I want to be in that guy's place!", every time I google to solve this I get tired and think "this suck, I suck". I need some guidance. Or an extremely lucky day.

I'm not quite out of beginner level yet, even at 8-14 hours a day for nearly 6 months. Still learning anatomy, honing line control, and internalizing perspective rules/form. I need a lot of work on color theory and properties of light. So no, my skills cannot yet bring my ideas to life successfully. I expect it to take years to get to the level I want to be at, which is for all intensive purposes very near to a professional digital concept artist's level. As for money, I honestly don't care about that stuff. All I care about is having free time to spend how I wish. As long as I have enough $ for that, I'm happy.

Guys guys in reality things are really simple. What you need to do, regardless of wether you are a hobbyist or an aspiring professional, is be me.

That's right. Unfortunately if you are not me, things aren't looking too good for you. I don't really think there's much that could make up for that handicap. You could try your hardest to become me, and that might get you halfway there. But if it all possible, just be me.

Then you'll make it no doubt.

I went to art school and I'm always trying to get better, and I'd like to do well with my paintings, but I don't try to make it my main career.
Instead I focus on office work in creative organisations. I'm a good office worker drone, and when it comes fine to it I need the stability of regular work hours and a paycheck I know is coming.
Painting is my passion, but I gotta eat.

I just liked to doodle a lot back in school, never really grew out of it and bought a few sketchbooks. I realize I'm nowhere near the level I could potentially be but at the same time drawing is a pretty good brain exercise for me. I've been in the navy for about a year now and it's a great way to pass the time when we're underway.

Now I'm NEETing in hopes that I'll eventually get good enough to live off freelance illustration or something after I move out.
It's tough staying motivated to actually study as opposed to playing video games all day, but I've been seeing some improvement so far (both in actual skill, and ability to motivate myself)

I've been replicating images ever since I was a little kid. I never traced because people give such shit about it, so I practiced endlessly until I could hand draw a near perfect copy of a source image. But I'm not skilled at drawing OC and I frankly don't care to... I like inking and shading, taking a rough sketch and bringing it to completion. Technical work.

I have a small collection of awards and ribbons from local art shows. But I eventually stopped entering because even though my submissions were done completely by my hand, they were still drawn from source images. I felt bad winning over artists who submitted their own OC - my work may look and be beautiful, but where would I be without those other artists laying it down first?

Met Mike Choi once at a comic con and chatted it up at his booth... showed him my work book and was told my lines were good enough to go pro inker if I cared to train for it. That was pretty cool!

But work is always still work for me - and working in comics especially is known for deadlines and demands, rush jobs and stress. I never did care for the thought of bringing that kind of pressure to my pleasant hobby. I draw because I like to, not because I have to.

>> No.2096771

My roommate is like that. They do art as a hobby, but when they are working on a piece they refuse to do anything that resembles household chores until they are done even though I'm the one with the actual deadlines. It pisses me off.

Also, they are good enough to pursue a career, but doesn't want to be bothered with deadlines. Then again I kinda consider them to be a huge coward as well so I think that's a huge reason for them keeping it as a hobby even though they have no problem taking commissions from people.
