"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2086825

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

So the idea was that there would be a soft light from the top right, with a few panels of harsh light, but it doesn't seem to quite work, not sure if the soft light has too much contrast, making her look like she is made of metal when the added harsh light increase the constrat even further.

no it's okay, whole thing is a bit dark. look at some refs. of skin though and note how the highlights work, skin tends to have huge diffuse blobs of highlight with not much mid-tone, and not much contrast between the mid-tone and the highlight. metal on the other hand has sharp intense highlights which contrast a lot with the mid-tones.

so if you think something looks metal-ly you should be able to work out what to change.

here's a ref. for you, i think it's similar lighting to what you're going for. you can see that you're on the right track i think.

it looks like fucking shit, and it's not because of the lighting. even if the lighting improved hundredfold, it would still look like shit. the lighting depends on the form, and the form is shit.

Thanks. I think.

But you're right. I have a really bad tendency to just block things in roughly with the mindset that I'll come back to them and finish them later, but I never do. I either just leave them or try some half-assed quick-fix to make them look better, which never works. I get burnt out from a drawing rather quickly, so by the time it's time to start cleaning the piece up and adding details that look correct I just say fuck it.

I wish I didn't, and it's this same mindset that is the reason that I never sit down and just focus and practice on the things I need to. I'm new at drawing cars, and I have very little experience with painting/digital painting of any sort, so the car being poorly drawn was something I was expecting. I did my best with the car, but it's just something that is going to be fixed with more practice.

i mean we're giving out shit for free after all. do we also have to present it on a silver platter?
i don't think of this as some professional critique circle, and i generally don't like "playing critique"
i've seen those kind of communities before. after a while everyone will break their neck trying to find good and bad things to say about each other, even if they are amateurs and can't think of anything to say naturally.

I liked this drawing too and I also thought of moebius right away. I think it's your use of unnatural colors and emphasis on lines plus the surrealism. I prefer your approach a lot more since you have this austere architectural sense that comes off.
Color-wise I think you are going in a good direction because they don't distract from the quality of your lines, which I think is the main focus. But to really push that I think it's good to have the drawing work fully (value-wise) without any colors. So I suggest stripping the colors for now and adding some blacks and greys to move the eye around and create some interesting shapes. Once that is done, you can really play around with the colors.

It kind of isn't...

It would be ok if the expressions were drastically different and noticeable or if the flower's colors were simply changed. But from what I see at first glance, it just looks like a copy and paste to fill up more space without any consideration or effort. Especially since they take up about 1/4th of the canvas, they need to sell 1/4th of the idea. These do nothing for me and really don't do much to enhance the character.

>> No.2093202

What I meant was she is a mute and cold character, so her expression would change very rarely, and subtly. Maybe it was my fault for not stating it in the original post. But I would like to hear your opinion on this though.

>> No.2093223

>>2093202

Not that guy youre replying too but I think your color choices don't communicate "muted person" all to well. Since some of the people here didnt immediately get quiet and muted out of it there might be something about your design not working right, assuming they're not fixated on anatomy. Try some different color combos. My first instinct is to try some purple petals and see how that works, cause that's also like a regal thing and she presumably has a lot of authority and power.

I designed the character based on the red hibiscus flower. I chose it since the flower is a national flower over here, and is important here culturally. This element is a part of the world design I'm trying to establish. Eventhough there are types of purple hibiscus, they're very rare here so my intention might not come through.

But there might be other ways to communicate that that I need to explore, as you said.

HEY!

That's mine in the OP!! Neat! I never thought I'd be worthy of showing up in the OP considering the kind of work I've seen posted here from time to time...

Anyway, just here to post a concept for the MC of a comic I'm working on, general critique is appreciated.

He's supposed to be the typical hotblooded/manly badass since the comic is supposed to be a deconstruction of the Monomyth.

(Not to go into too much detail, but the story centers around 9 homonculi girls created from the Prima Materia and their stories and adventures. Muse Calliope is the Muse of Heroes (made more sense than "epic poetry" but they're the same thing in a way), and her story kinda focuses around this dude).

Named him Yash cause it sounded kinda cool, and the name in Hebrew meant like brave or some shit, and it reminded me of Vash the Stampede, but then I didn't like how it was a rather typical name for Arabs, so I changed it around, made Yash his nickname, and named him Iassu by playing with Phonetics.

His form of combat is based around Martial Arts. Since Wuxia and Monomyths go hand in hand, and I'm an avid fan of MA and the philosophy around them and such. There is magic in this world, both in the form of Mana and Chi, and obviously Yash focuses on the later, which for Westerners (where there story takes place) it's rather rare and exotic. Esp since most can't manipulate Mana directly, and it's seen as a taboo (Magitech is common tho).

I know it might sound kinda cliche, but I'm speaking in general terms, and since Cal's story is a "deconstruction" of the monomyth, I'm kinda trying to set up the cliche to break expectations halfway through her story. Yash is "the main character" (big emphasis on those quotations).

Think like a mix of Kamina+Mugen.

Hotblooded, outgoing, overly optimistic, smug, and a dirty-lipped badass punk sorta guy.

He's the hero, but he's not overly altruistic, more like the "do my own thing, follow my own path, and do things my way" kinda guy.

Though the set up is supposed to sorta mirror a monomyth and build him up to be the hero for specific reasons, his personality is much less than the "typical hero" I guess I shoulda specified that.

I think "anime style" is generally more popular and accepted in the west now than before. Especially considering Korra and Avatar.

Plus, there's a very large market for anime/Japanese products in the West, and I think you'd have more success getting published in such, rather than in Japan which tends to be a bit more... racially elitist, at least from what I've heard.

In that same vein however, yes, European styles tend to have a strong Disney and Japanese influence to them, oftentimes making them a bit of a blend between Eastern and Western styles.

Source: I live in Yurop.

Oh, and if you wanna get published in Europe, France and Italy are your go-to places from what I've heard. Everything else sucks.

Thanks for answering! Yeah, ever since Avatar I feel like "anime" influences are much more accepted in Western products. I think you can even see it more in the more recent Disney movies such as Tangled.

I don't want to work in Japan because i know that, realistically, it's nearly impossible- They're very elitist in that regard, as you mentioned and to be honest they don't need a western girl doing what 10 thousand japanese guys can do (and willing to work within their fucked up working conditions).

I'm living in Portugal but this place is a shithole for anything related to arts. I'm planning on going back to London but tbh I'm pretty much free to move anywhere.

Oh I don't really care much for /ic/s opinion on anything, but that is a genuine anatomical mistake, a common one (most people might not even notice they making it until someone points it out). Which doesnt mean the guy doesnt know how to draw (he clearly does), he might've just overlooked it. Maybe he was drawing late at night and didnt notice out of exhaustion (there are so many possible reasons). He might not do this often at all. I've made this mistake before (pic related) and only noticed when someone pointed it out to me. This mistake is actually pretty common nowadays and i think it started when the whole "drawing girls with feet pointing in" trend started. Lots of people started drawing feet pointed in and not twisting the whole leg.

I'm not putting down the drawing or the artist but I wont defend it as it being intentional because it's not like when people exaggerate proportions for the sake of cartoonization.

>> No.2095530

>>2095512

The level of critique here would be so much better if /ic/ wasn't weird about people being clearly above and beyond the average level of skill. Once you start getting good enough to have an recognizable style (and i mean that in a general sense, even if the artist in question draws realistic environments or concept art), you become a massive target for trolls and jealous faggots. Even if you have the patience of a saint or if you're ghost for a few months time before you pop back in, the constant deluge of unneeded shit your way will just drag you down and make you want to get the fuck out.

>> No.2095554

Aw man, I couldn't agree enough.

I mean, I'm not pro, but I've certainly got a solid grasp on all the fundamentals. Yes, I can certainly improve them all, but sometimes, the kind of criticism I've gotten here has been so off the mark, it just really... more than anything annoys you. In the end, it starts making you very hostile to pretty much all types of criticism, even legitimate and good criticism cause you have you defenses up for yet another troll or jealous newbie.

This is why I made my decision to join up to a lot of other art forums. Becuase /ic/ can be great for illegal resources and for beginners to get a leg up on things, but one you've got about an intermediate level, you're just gonna be held back by a large portion of the community here.

Oftentimes, my posts on here either get ignored or draw trolls, whereas very bad art will be a magnet for all sorts of criticism, both good and bad, which, at that level is great, but once you're intermediate, /ic/ can do very little for you I feel.

And tbh, I feel a large part of the hostily here has to do a great deal with the identity crisis a lot of 4channers have where they feel they gotta berate others and be hateful in order to validate and feel better about themselves. I think this is most evident on /a/, where they pretty much hate everyone and everything, including themselves, and moreover, are proud of it.

Sounds about right with my experience.
I tend to get ignored, but more frustratingly I only get comments and critiques about stuff once I post a finished image and not during the several sketch/wips I post before hand where it would have been more helpful.

So I just have to be more critical of my own work at this point.

I was ignored at some art forums, I am ignored here sometimes, It Happens.
I think the problem with some people (not forums) is the ego. I try to give good advice, but some people don't use what they learn to improve. Sometimes I see people with the same problems from years ago, and anons giving the same answers that i gave.

People need to try to learn with tutorials and stuff, think about they are doing, not just make a copy and nothing more. This place is greate becouse people are not polite with you everytime. If you can survive here, the criticism outside will be nothing to you.

Give good advice to people who don't try to increase is sad, but, what can I do? Nothing! So I'll use my arm to be better. But I'm trying. Lol.

Just have fun, and learn to see. Drawing is a complex puzzle. And people will guide you if your eyes are blurried, don't give up.

>> No.2095772

Easiest way is to differentiate her from the bg using value. Pay attention to her silhouette and make sure it is clearly defined. Her right hand and her horns are blending into the bg (bats wing).
As for the background, try thinking deeper about the story of these characters. Why they are doing what they are doing, and what kind of world they are part of. That should give you a starting point.

The last one seems better, but why not try to be a bit more drastic and completely turn the colors around? E.g. you could try to make the dragon red or something.

I'd also try to make the background fairly/very dark, and then have the edges of the dragon get lost in the background, and the dragon itself also be fairly dark, so that the character on the right really pops out.

You can try pumping up the contrast on the dragon so that a few of the brightest regions on it remain fairly bright, and then dim out the rest of the dragon to merge more with the background. That way you can still use brighter, smaller highlights to basically show the entire shape of the dragon, while still having most of the dragon be pretty dark.

Anyway, just a thought, no idea if that'll work out.

I can kinda do it, but it always ends up being a long, drawn out process, especially when I have to give her a proper expression at the odd angle.
