The problem with mannequins is they don't stretch and bunch up like their real world counter part. They don't morph like real people when being active. The fat and muscles don't get pushed and pulled around like real living fleshy people.

Find the biggest slab of meat you can find, not cut meat but like half of a pig or something. Contort that, watch the muscle, move it around, look at it, paint.

The wooden one should be enough.
You are supposed to be able to modify the pose on paper, it is a tool that helps planning, soving foreshortening problems, and imagining something in 3d space.

If you rely on a direct reference that much it's easier to just take a picture of yourself hoding the pose.

I don't want to offend them but I guess everyone of them uses photobashing as a tool or used at some time, it's just convenient.

Digital is, at least for me harder to think of as art because it's neither unique(in the sense of being 1 piece of art) nor do you know anything about process of creation, I would not think as highly of an artist if I knew he glued photos to his canvas and painted on top of it.
