Ok I'm trying to make the view finders from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain but the instructions don't fucking match up at all.

Thanks for the advice/redline. You're right about the perspective, too. I was eye-balling it 'cause originally I didn't think I'd take it anywhere further than the initial 10min lay-in. It's meant to be a background for a foreground character so I don't feel the need to have a strong focal point for the city itself, but it certainly needs to look busier. I'll try adding in some ref-photo-inspired clutter and see what that does.

Yeah, I just watched the proko vid

Its like, for drawing the lines where the brows and mouth should go, he places it on a box surface. It is much easier visualize, but the lines would curve because its round. Though the box is very close.

I have not attempted drawing with a box yet, by im not sure how I would go about it. I feel like it would be tricky to get the depth right. Because with a sphere, Im building on to it, but with a box, I think you would have carve into to cube to create depth, and thought of that confuses me.

You're right in the sense that I exaggerated the gesture a lot, which Hampton encourages. Guess it's pretty easy to exaggerate into impossible poses, I didn't even notice. Thanks anon.

>> No.2078631

>>2078621
The problem with exaggerating that much is you don't know enough to do it properly, so it just looks wrong. You're not even reinforcing hte existing gesture, but rather ruining it by sticking the tits out more and making the ass rounder. Try observing the ref closer and sticking more with what it is. Like your basic measurements are way off--look at the relationship of the feet for example.

>> No.2078633

Remember, a lot of people like Hampton, Vilppu, and Proko all suggest to exaggerate, but it has to make sense (and I believe that state that as well, saying to exaggerate but stay within the rule or something).

>> No.2078635

>>2078631
The relationship between the positions of the feet -- as per the nature of exaggeration -- were meant to be different than the ref, so I don't know why you're talking about measurement failures. I 'pushed' every angle in the pose on purpose, and it became impossible. Not an issue of observation; it's an issue of lack of anatomical knowledge that would have made a believable exaggerated pose possible.

what he is saying is valid. the feet are much further apart, but the leg position is the same. this means something has been distorted. by moving the foot back you've extended the length of her right leg dramatically, so now her legs are completely different lengths.

If you've taken it beyond 10-min-lay-in, I feel like I have to point out a few things.
1. You need a book on perspective, and you need to work on it hard. Everything is misaligned and on different planes.
2. You need to stop copying and pasting. I see it in the vases, I see it in the gargoyles. It's lazy and incorrect.
3. In all of your renderings, you rely too much on stock textured brushes. I see the chalk one featuring prominently through them.
If you don't know how to use these brushes, please don't use them at all. Your painting is extremely muddy.
4. Lighting. Look at the vases... I think you tried some kind of ambient occlusion + reflected light, but that's not quite how it works. It feels very off because it's like there are two different light sources but only those vases are affected by both.
Speaking of lighting, that shadow on the right, under the alcove/roof. It's not in perspective, and starts at the wrong point. The front part of this roof doesn't project a shadow in your drawing. As a result, it looks very off.
5. Lastly, compositionally, it's very uninteresting. You're not following any kind of rule here. It seems to have a central focusing point but it's a really bland gate. Yes, you plan to put a foreground character in, but that won't help anything.
And by the way, "city"? It doesn't look anything like one.

>>2078621
This one only reinforces my belief that you need to take a perspective book in your hands. You've jumped into Hampton with only some mediocre rendering experience.
I recommended Dynamic Sketching to you a while back, but it seems you need more draftsmanship skills than I thought.
I also recommend doing things one at a time. Don't pick up different books or lectures at once. Work through one, take notes, finish it, then go on.

When you practice something, you should always be putting your full effort into it. There's no such thing as "rushing ______ to accomplish ______". Reason being, you don't yet fully understand what is integral to what you're doing, and what isn't.

If you rush without fully understanding what you're attempting to do, you can very easily skip major steps or concepts, leaving you confused and uncertain.

You should be expecting to practice for hours at a time, and if you get tired, take a break. Assume the mindset that you will be practicing the same thing for a long time.

Honestly, one of the most important skills to learn first is patience.

try twisting the hip box and torso box away from each other. also the top plane of the hip box and bottom plane of the rib box aren't parallel.
I don't know how to explain it that well, so here's hampton

>> No.2078877

Man, all of this hampton, loomis, vilpu stuff has never really sat all that well with me. Drops students into dealing with 3D form really early, so they're trying to balance form, gesture, proportion all simultaneously.

The way I was taught (by Kevin Chen, if you've heard of him) was much more gradual. You start off learning the proportions using a very simple 2D mannequin. No 3D forms at all, just very simple, deliberate flat shapes.

Once you've learned that, you take the flat shapes and carve them into 3D forms. Cylinders for your ribcage/pelvis, boxes for the sections of the limbs, etc.

Then once you're comfortable with that, you start working on curving the finer planes and adding the muscle-forms by cutting wedges into these 3D masses.

Having learned gradually like that, these better known guides start to make a lot more sense. I can't imagine jumping into them early on though.

>> No.2078883

>>2078877
First of all, hampton and vilppu are not for absolute beginners, the sticky even says so. Loomis actually starts you with very flat geometrical forms, hell, the first thing he does is tell you all you gonna need is a flat circle.
Also if you learn perspective before going on with hampton and vilppu, like the sticky tells you to, all your problems are solved, since you actually know how simple 3d forms work and you learned how to place them.

And again we have someone who didn't read the sticky spilling bullshit. Gotta love this chilling too.

>> No.2078888

Indeed I haven't read the sticky, because I'm not here to learn. I'm merely commenting on how so many beginners start jumping into 3D forms when it comes to figure far too early.

As for loomis starting with flat shapes... Yeah, perhaps, in the way that a circle is the immediate step before drawing a sphere. Pretty much all Loomis focuses on is form and gesture.

So, as far as I can tell, what I'm 'spilling' doesn't seem to be bullshit. Either way, I'm going to go swing by the sticky and see what it says.

Although I am curious - what is your idea of "learning perspective"? At which point would you specifically consider yourself to have learned it?

I'm not that anon, actually. I was just wondering.
I don't actually have any problem with what you've said; it is, however, just a different approach. In the end, what matters is what people find comfortable.
By the way, your lessons could use some polish. It's quite obvious you're not a teacher.
I don't mean to insult you, I've actually been with you since the first post in r/ArtFundamentals (I posted in the last thread, too) and I like your tutorials, but they are somewhat shallow and sometimes even flawed. Especially the first lesson, I don't know how you expect people to get ellipses and their anatomy without knowing something about basic perspective, horizon, and planes first. You explain the notion of vanishing points only later, when you get to boxes... and the first box you draw doesn't have all of its lines converging to a VP.

>> No.2078966

>>2078940
Oh, sorry about that. I guess that's the danger when everyone's anonymous!

Yeah, my lessons are definitely rough to say the least. When I started /r/ArtFundamentals, it was just a passing thing. The chance to write down what I knew, and push people in the right direction. I ended up getting in over my head pretty quickly, and I just keep digging my hole deeper...

That's one of the reasons I make all my lessons free. There's a lot of work involved, but the result definitely isn't anything remotely professional, so I figure it wouldn't be very fair to charge for it.

Ultimately, the whole polishing thing is why I moved onto a dedicated website instead of sticking on reddit. It lets me rewrite lessons, see the general responses and what kind of challenges the people submitting homework tend to face, and then work in tweaks where people are having trouble.

I totally understand what you're saying about jumping into VPs before explaining what they are - and I will go back and fix that up eventually, but for now I tend to only jump at updating areas where I see people struggling. For the most part, people seem to just skip over what they don't entirely understand at that moment, which is totally fine with me.

I really appreciate the suggestions by the way, and sorry again for assuming you were the previous person.

I think I am either pressing too hard or I should really go get that felt pen. However, if I press lighter, I feel like the pen shakes in my hand and I can't get a decent line at all.

Second, how should I be holding the pen? If I hold it at a ninety degree angle, I can write neater but as stupid as it sounds, I can't see where I am drawing. If I lower the pen, then it either doesn't apply ink at all, or I draw at a weird arc.

Third, am I supposed to be drawing lines fast? I feel the faster I go, the more it arcs. If I sort of slow down as I go, I can make a straighter line but I don't think I am supposed to be doing it that way.

>You should be expecting to practice for hours at a time

If your method of improving is terrible, yes.
This philosophy of drawing until your bones break is pushed so much on this board and other art communities.

And its dead wrong. In fact if you are trying to improve that way the only thing it says is that you are improving very slowly with an enormous time commitment. The exact opposite of effective learning and improvement.

I think it depends on focus. If you can focus on what you're doing for hours, go ahead and draw like crazy, but if you can't, just draw for 30 minutes, or 3 hours.

>> No.2080169

>>2080147

Copy the plates in Drawing the Head and Hands 10 times (or 100, or whatever as many as you can force yourself to do just don't be lazy and impatient), and memorize everything Loomis says. Don't do it mindlessly either, really try to understand what you're drawing and why. Be accurate, don't trace. Try a couple of your own every now and again, and try to figure out why they don't come out right (I need to learn how to construct necks, I'm not placing these details on the face three dimensionally, I'm symbol drawing this on the face, this line is angled wrong, just examples like that really dig in there).

Eventually your brain will just work it out, and the practice will do you good.

This.

If you draw for 3 hours and constantly complain, you won't improve. A good example of this is Peter Han's exercise. If you're drawing a straight line, but you want to make it perfect, if you practice it for 3 hours straight and concentrate on getting the line right, you will improve. If you just blindly stroke without caring, you'll see very little improvement.

Frustration can cloud your judgement. But this is where "talent" comes in. Most "talented" artists have to go through their demons.

If you beat Frustration, you also have to fight Stress.
If you beat Stress, you also have to fight Depression.
If you beat Depression, you'll only make Frustration stronger.

And the cycle continues.
Here's a tip: become friends with one of these demons. They may help you fight the other two, but they'll also introduce you to new friends that may make you crazy.

You're still drawing in 2D shapes
Draw some simple boxes and spheres in 3D, even if you think it's a waste of time. Make them LOOK 3D, feel the volume of the shapes, draw cross-contours around them, anything to break out of drawing shapes and into drawing forms. Slow your hand down, try and concentrate on making each single line deliberate instead of chickenscratching.

-Keep doing your constructions and try to experiment with shapes, views, and methods of construction. It gets easier the more you do it.

-Pick subject matter and try to do basic constructions of it
>Pic related. Farm vehicles broken down into simple volumes.

They are. I can't really give too much advice on this area. Best I can stay is to observe nature, drawings and paintings of landscapes, and then draw from them.

Where's the light source? What temperature is it? Is it soft or hard light? What effect does the light have on the local color of the clothes and skin? These questions were clearly not asked.

There is zero sense of form. Is he a sticker? Look at his arms man, does he have linear black holes in between his forearm muscles such as the brachioradialis? We have skin that overlaps the muscle if you didn't know. I cannot tell what position his arms are in in terms of the perspective towards the viewer because they have no decisions of anatomy.

That hat doesn't fit his head correctly, once again there's no sense of form on the hat - no reason for me to believe this hat could exist in our reality. Watch your fucking forms man, your hatching is ruining any sense of curvature on the hat. Is that a fucking shadow the the left side or did he just make that side really damn dirty?

Look at the eyes. Those are retard eyes. You gave the cool edgy samurai warrior guy cross-eyed retard eyes. Use reference for things you don't understand, and use it still for things you do.

This nigga is about 12-14 heads tall as well... he looks ridiculous. Yeah, some people have freakish proportions but think about your character - do you want him to look like a mutant?

The clothes are poorly fitted around the body. You did not think about gravity when you drew those clothes. Did you think at all when you drew anything? Also stop hiding his hands, no one stands with their fists like that. No one who isn't constipated.

Draw from life and study actual drawing instead of doing this stuff, it really does get you nowhere when you don't have any idea what you're doing. Imaginative exercises are necessary to further your skill to some degree but they must be dwarfed by actual studies of how life works and how to put that on paper.

I'm trying to improve my figure drawing. Been doing gestures for about a month and a half. Started at 120s, then 90s, and just got down to 60s. I think I'm getting decent (or at least mediocre) at it, and hopefully I can get down to 30s by the end of the month.

Where do I go from here, though? Doing gestures every day is definitely helping me improve, but whenever I try and draw from a photograph I get proportions completely wrong and I still don't know how to draw limbs or hands or feet or faces correctly. I've studied some Loomis for faces but always have to end up redrawing the jaw once I start to put the eyes, nose, and mouth on the head because it ends up being too small.

Do I start drawing skeletons to get a better idea of arm/leg/torso length? Do I jump into anatomy to get an idea of how muscles work and shape the body? Or do I do studies on each individual part of the body then put all that knowledge together next time I draw someone?

I'm lost, please help.

Anon with the shaky hands from a few threads back, I tried to do the small line practice from the Peter Han video and did some gesture drawing. Regarding the lines; linework is something that comes over a really really long time, this practice is just focused practice at it but even people that have been drawing for years can have mediocre lines.

I've been drawing for 4 years and I still have trouble with that exercise. Keep up the good work and practice all kinds of lines even if they look shitty for a while.

For the gestures, you seem to be more focused on contours than the "flow" of the figure. It might be hard to figure out but try looking for the line of action before you draw out the anatomy and contours.

Thanks, I'll try going back and forth with all sorts of lines and will try ellipses as well.

>It might be hard to figure out but try looking for the line of action before you draw out the anatomy and contours.
I sort of understand that it's one or two of those lines that describe the main "flow" of the figure and I usually do draw them in before I continue adding things, but I guess I'm still trying to focus too much on detail instead of the flow. Guess I'll just have to practice it until I start getting it and be a lot more up on flow and speed, instead of detail. Thanks for the suggestions.

Do anatomy and perspective first. When you have a good foundation set on drawing, you can move on to light. After light you go to color.

Study perspective more and it'll come naturally.
Basically, drawing figures with those kinds of guidelines only works from symmetric poses. When something tilts, shifts, rotates or even lets out two decibels of a fart those guidelines don't really work anymore unless you adjust them. Vertically, it's easy to do so but when moving in space towards or away from the viewer you need to know about different planes. Then, boxes on different planes.
Most people eyeball when it comes to this.

You're actually lucky. Ive seen times where some anons post small exercises and get constructive replies, and then there are times where anons post something that looks like it took longer than your average drawing exercise, and get no replies at all. Im not trying to blame anyone, Im just saying that in beginner threads, you should be prepared to post many different exercises , so that you;ll eventually get some replies on one.

chicken scratch can only be rid of when you start drawing from the shoulder. it might be awkward/inaccurate at first, but you'll thank yourself later when you get used to it. for the right proportions you should construct the body first, like the blue figure on the right, and then draw contours on.

Practice anon!
Try the Loomis ball shape faces just with lines, try to do them correct. Try to see when they are wrong. Get a real life ball and make a line or use a tape to make the lines. Use the ball as reference, draw a lot. Try to draw without look to the ball.
Next put some detail, like eyes.

So I did a line drawing of an egg on a cloth and focused on the folds of the cloth. It's really tempting to try and scratch the lines but i tried to do them in single strokes. May do more cloth drawings for practicing strokes in drawings. Are the lines passable or utter trash?

I don't think Hampton's book is for beginners.
People here loves Hampton, I don't know why!!
if you don't know how to draw a sphere with lines on it, how you can draw with boxes or cylindrical shapes in Hampton's book??? You need to learn those things first, it's important.

You can draw the simple loomis heads in Draw with a pencil, they are not that hard. If you can't do them, why go to Hempton?

>> No.2082457

>>2082449

You're definitely getting the idea, cloth folds are a bitch and take a lot of practice and observation from life to get right.

Look at places where the lines run together awkwardly like the middle bottom of the picture and just to the right of the egg - consider breaking up the lines here a bit more to give a stronger impression of a single piece of fabric flowing over itself. Experiment with the structure you are implying and don't expect it to fully make sense until you have shaded it more fully. Lines alone are somewhat inadequate for conveying this kind of flowing, overlapping surface with any real fidelity.

Shading it is going to be EVEN MORE OF A BITCH THOUGH - patience is everything

I feel like I've become too familiar with this drawing, are there any other drawings that are good for upside down exercises?

Also, if there is a picture I like, is there any point in copying it? Will that help me get better, or is it just a waste of time?
