Hard to say at that stage, I'd try making lightsources clearer by picking a primary one and damping down the rest.
Currently it seems liek it has 2 primary ones, one coming from the moon and other one from the right.
Also the moon is somehow distracting.

Oh, to be sincere, I'm pretty new to watercolors myself, but I will try to give advice based on whay I could figure out for now. It can be very very frustrating to work with it because you basically can't correct your mistakes, so, plan your moves carefully and pay attention all the time to what you are doing. If you get tired and get less attentious, quit for some time. Also, always draw the points where the highlights should be and be very careful when painting around it, it is VERY easy to fuck up. Also, if you commit a mistake, you can use pure water and rub the brush on the area, it will be less apparent, but it will never disappear completely and the rubbing makes things uglier, so avoid it the most you can. Flat brushes are working the best for me and giving me the most precision, but that depends on what you want to do I suppose. As for colors, I'm using an extremely reduced pallete of 3 colors (magenta, ultramarine blue and cadmium yellow) because it's all I could pay for for now. If you are also short in money, always prefer the reduced pallete that is of a good brand than a complete one that is crap, it really, really makes a LOT of difference, it's ridiculous. I think that's it for now, if I remember something else I post again.

Cast shadow on the face is off. Specifically, you have the highlight from the primary light source present in the shadow but darkened. If it's in the shadow then it shouldn't be affected by the primary light source for the most part (barring bounce light, subsurface scattering, etc).

I noticed you did the same thing for your secondary light source (the rim light on the right). When it meets the head the light there suddenly darkens. Since it's an independent light source, it can exist just as strongly in the shadows of the primary (depending on what is your secondary light source and if anything is obstructing it).

How are you able to achieve soft edges?
(Or the illusion of soft edges, I guess)
Or is that kind of a result of how you're putting the paint down? Because I know you can drip some watercolors down then, as it's still wet, you bring another color into it. Idk dawg.

Kinda hard to explain in words. I happened to have a lot of the older states saved as layers so I threw pic related together. Hopefully helps somewhat.

What I tried to do is mostly focus on establishing overall forms (neck is a bent cylinder, head has parts of cones, spheres, boxes, etc). Define a light direction, and try to model according to those base forms.

As for detail, a good amount was from the drawing in the first panel. A lot of the details come just from refining edges a bit, clarifying larger planes, etc. Most of the bits of detail come from an edge trick seen in the Arne Jansson painting down there. Min Yum does it a lot in his work too, and I've always liked it.

For the detailing, be much more subtle with your color and value transitions. You don't want to break the big light and dark shapes.

From the 100% zoom you can see that the painting is a bit sloppy, but reads better once it's downscaled for the web. I noticed that was the case with a lot of the art of the Massive Black guys back when somebody posted full res file samples of their work.

The spear head lining up with use looks a bit staged. I'd rotate it a bit along it's axis so that one side of the blade is closer to us.

The dude's complexion looks like it's different in the light and shadow. Judging by the wall it looks like your primary light is warm and the shadows are very cool. The head though looks equally warm as the hand, and it seems yellower too. Either make the hand warmer or the head cooler (or both).

Still looks like a wip. There's no contrast in detail - everything is equally smooth with broad strokes. No small brush strokes or texture anywhere. I'd introduce some pattern work somewhere in the clothing (probably the cloak, along the main color or just the trim). The face also looks unfinished. It's a focal point, so spend a little more time on it. Same with the hand - try to get some deep dark reds for occlusion shadows where you can.

>sticking your sword point first into the rocky underwater ground of some cavern
Now that is obviously just me being autistic. However, what is she doing exactly? I mean sure she is striking this "cool" pose, but in a random cavern? Is she admiring the walls, like is she a speleologist or something? I'm failing to see the narrative. If she was supposed to be just a pretty girl in armor standing there, then the composition is hurting the subject. Even if she were supposed to be staring at the stones for some reason, it seems to me that the way the canvas is utilized doesn't really make for an interesting composition, since the object/s she's supposedly admiring is off screen, and instead you've got a whole lot of the background taking lot of space for no apparent reason/with nothing happening.

I feel ya on the sword abuse man, It just makes for an interesting but easy to draw pose so that's my bad.

Someone else commented that her looking off screen fucked the composition over, so i flipped her around. My idea is that there's some sort of shrine or something in there that she's admiring/paying respects to. I'm not really sure but I'll figure it out.

How would you recommend utilizing more of the canvas efficiently?

Should I add some other knights weighting in the background? Maybe make her bigger and more towards the foreground?

Thanks for the advice

Maybe ground the two bottom lizards by making the fingers actually grabbing the terrain, they are kind of just floating right now.

Also your clouds are very cotton-ballish, nimbus clouds, which I think are the ones you're drawing are actually flat on the bottom. Maybe study some real clouds before making up you're own.

Also It doesn't seem very stylized if thats what you're going for, the lizards look like they may have been referenced from photographs other than the fingers, which might be where you tried stylizing?

Also the front lizard would be touching the glass in that positioning, and it's body isn't reflecting any interaction with the jar. Maybe have it turning, or bring the legs further down to place the lizard in a better position in space.

Soft edges are very easy to do with watercolors, I'm very sure you will figure. All you have to do is to work with the colors while the paint is still wet. While it's wet, you can put one color besides the other and they will blend basically by themselves. Also, you can wet the area you are going to paint itself insead, and then you apply the colors, they will spread around the area the paper is wet. It doesn't need to be as cryptic as having to move the paper so it drips at all, I'm sure you will manage. Be sure to buy a good quality paper! It is very important. If the paper is crap, there is MUCH less possibilities for you in this medium.

What I can see from that image, you have very little blending among those colors, I bet I could do the same result with pencils.

I think you are too focused on just coloring different areas, try layering and making things without outlines. Looks like the only painted part is the background, that just follows the outlines of mask. Try looking at the basics of painting first.

I see, this is just the underpainting so I was trying to set down guides for cool/warm tones and shadows, should I be going about it differently? I figured that when I start with the colour I should be slowly building up layers gradually to keep it from getting muddy.

Also a ref I used on the mask.

It's cute. but the thing about metal and armor is it's high reflectivity of the environment. Rendering a piece of armor in a white-box-room might give you a false idea about how it's surface works. Regardless it's a good start. Just something to be aware of since there's a lot of weirdness involved with rendering shiny stuff.

Imo the biggest problem with this piece and something majorly responsable for it's amateur look is the fact that there's no clear 'key' to the values. There's no statement about wether things that are illuminated are more important than things in the shadows. It's all very 50-50 while avoiding extremes on either end, making the light look somewhat dull and boring.

Would love some opinions on this.

Here's my take on this. I'm no expert in lighting but I think the values are distracting from the focal point. The shadows especially because they are very harsh and very dark. I tried to emphathize the focal point by adding more contrast to that point and less contrast to the surroundings.

Can you show us? Did none of them have a proper foreground, middle ground, and background? Not to imply that every piece needs all 3, but for a dynamic action scene you'd imagine one character being closer to the camera than the other. Right now everything (characters, environment) exists on a flat plane perpendicular to the viewer. It's like we're looking at paper cutouts glued to a window, and through the window is just the dark night sky.

At the very least establish a horizon, and some visual cue that shows depth.

Bit dark and muddy. Did a quick paintover, it's a little overly airbrushed and glowy, but that's what happens when I do this quick and sloppy.

But yeah, you need to hold your local values more, like hte legs are so dark just cause they're in shadow, when in reality there would be a lot more light bouncing around and lighting them up.

I'm "that anon" again, what I meant is that for a good painting you need a very solid structure, or else the result will probably look shitty.

Pic related, you have to think of painting as a 3D rendering program where you can model objects and set up lights, but instead of having a PC doing all the work you are the one who does it, with brush strokes.

Hard as fuck but fun too once you start to understand it a bit.

I dont know enough about abstract art to really critique this though. I would have tried to get the multicolored feel into the hair by using colored lightsources but you dont use strong lighting and I feel like this style doesnt require any harsh lighting since it lives off of the colors.

Dude with the sci fi city here, I am daltonic. Real fun when people asked me why my fire is green.
Only tip I can give you is not to mix colors by yourself but pick them in photoshop where you know where on the color wheel green stops and yellow begins/magenta stops and blue begins. etc

(english is not my mothertongue so now I know the exact term for that, used to call it red-green colorblindness, thanks!)

The image is cropped near the ankles. Cropping on joints is generally avoided because it visually implies amputation.

Also, if the whole figure is visible except the feet - a small part of the body - it looks like it was intentionally avoided due to difficulty.

Nope. He may have created them in paint, so if you can't see past that superficial quality, then you can't see the appeal. And forget about the content, it doesn't matter.

Look at the variety in the shapes and forms. Certainly far from flawless, but there is obvious sensitivity to what he is creating. Graphic quality, simplification of forms, limited color palette - all deliberate choices. Give this guy a pencil and paper and he'll probably come up with something just as interesting. There is absolutely no focus. The right side in particular is an awkward mess. It's over detailed in all the wrong places.

It's incredibly obvious you're resistant to redoing large chunks of your drawings, and instead are trying to make up for by adding more and more detail. I really advise you to accept that you need to redo major chunks of the piece, or to start over.

The backdrop is really well done, and the drawing had great potential. The right side of the image is just too fucked to continue without making major changes.

Good luck!

Totally man. It gets tricky.

I've attached what I would personally go towards. There could be a better range of lighter values. If you open up 'Levels', you'll see it's very heavily skewed towards dark values. Maybe try lightening up the backdrop to help contrast the dark, dead foreground.

I think some thicker trees in the foreground would also help the separation between the two areas of the drawing. The current dead trees are so twiggy that they're sort of blending into the background.

Hope this helps! Again, this is just my idea of how it could be fixed a bit.

I love the foresty vibe you get by cutting the canvas repeatedly with the foreground trees. It works incredibly well from afar (thumb) but somehow you manage to lose the appeal when the image is looked at from up close.

Also, your work is a little muddy, but I always figured this was somewhat of a stylistic choice because it's something you put into all of your pieces. One thing you could try to play with maybe would be to really make deliberate decisions as to where you peak your saturation, and where you keep it held back.

Another thing I think works great is how you create a sense of the viewer being immersed by keeping the foreground warm and the 'outside' scene cold. That works really well.
