skulls are pretty complicated to draw in 2-point perspective. I suggest you pay more attention to the vertical and horizontal relationships of the landmarks/obvious corners, making sure your drawing behaves under the same perspective rules as the reference. As well as using angles to check your drawing.

Of course 2d relationships aren't everything, you need to feel the shift, the planes of the nasal bones for example, and the direction of the plans of the muzzle.

It's easy to get near-sighted and figure that you're drawing a certain part of an image correctly. It's really important to relate the part to other parts, otherwise things can become inaccurate overall very quickly.

I've pointed out some real big problems that you need to learn to notice. If problems like this exist the drawing will be very off. The angle of the jawline needs to be steeper. (marked at 1).

the bottom contour of the cheekbone is very off and is causing problems, as well as the top contour.

The corners of the eye sockets must be respected. In your reference they're fairly parallel and this needs to be maintained in your drawing. You also need to learn to simplify the curved and complicated contour of the receding cheekbone. You need to see that the direction is mainly down-right, not down-left.

Watch the contour of the muzzle/mouth. You don't need to copy the contour to get this right, but the mouth really protrudes quite a lot, like a half-orange(for all human skulls).

Seek out corner relationships like the red line I drew. This explains some proportional problems.

I could redline to show the horizontal/vertical misplacements, but I don't want to do too much, and you yourself can check them as well.

If you can't see angle relationships that well, you should use your pencil to measure angles. Proko has some videos on youtube about it. Try out this practice both while digitally drawing and while drawing traditionally, and your intuitive sense for angle will also improve.

kek. No idea how I went this wrong, but somehow the shape of Ultron's head became very wide. Any advice on how I can create more accurate proportions? I also, probably started adding details too soon so it was harder for me to change certain things as I went further.

I dont know your situation.
Assume you hold your pencil correctly.

I struggle at first too but later realize I draw too fast and to "scribble"
I try to imitate big masters who can make badass stuff with scibbling, but not me

So I try to draw slower, think clearly the line before drawing, be more patient. dont blur or hide anything no idea how to draw.

Then I am better OwO

>> No.2073354

>>2073340
slow down. As a beginner I would in general draw way too fast and sloppily. Take a second to plan your next move in your drawing. One line per thought is a good measure.

Also you should try to develop an understanding for the great variety of lines you can achieve with pencil. Light, dark, thick, ragged, smooth(arm/shoulder). Really try to vary the way you draw with the pencil as much as possible.

Good line confidence comes with confidence and experience, as well as some of the mechanics of drawing lines. Hands/wrist for small lines, anything long should be elbow or shoulder. Don't fizzle your lines, don't change the direction of your lines, don't scratch. Know what line you want to put down, and put it down.

It also comes from the understanding that rugged/poor lines disrupt the visual reading of contour and shape, so it's very undesirable. In photoshop, from experience of what brush size and opacity will do the job for you.

My last bit of advice, is that as an artist and student, your goal is to always know what you're trying to grasp and learn. The next thing is to know that becoming a master at one thing sometimes involves letting it go and moving on or backwards. Because being a master/really great at that thing often involves more than just the study of that area, but perhaps also skill and vast knowledge that must come from other artistic pursuits, as well as true mastery of the fundamentals/basics.

>> No.2073358

>>2073354
>don't change the direction of your lines
I mean don't do it unnecessarily. If there's a change in direction actually in the line that should be there, of course, draw it. But don't disrupt a line's direction if there is no reason to.

Hey I think I can help here! I think you're practicing shapes rather than lines. You could try and make the lines follow the shapes and vary the line weight. Also if you're practicing, I find it's easier to just do small sketches rather than a full piece. Like, if I wanna learn how to draw rocks, I'll draw a bunch of rocks instead of a full landscape. As for the anatomy of the skull and the values, I know they're off, but I don't know shit about so I can't really help. You were practicing lines anyway!

Nice, is that for a game you're making?

If you're making mockups like this though you have to be careful about how it's gonna be programmed. Like that turtle climbing that hill. I don't think the programmer is gonna be enchanted to code slopes and shadows that follow that slopes. It's pretty but it costs a lot for not much results. I'm saying that assuming it's gonna be a 2D platformer game. And for the background (assuming you're gonna do parallax scrolling) you have to make sure you can divide it in different layers as they are going to move

good advice, i also would add make sure that the person your drawing is actually looking at something somewhere. so the eyes are aligned and focused. also the viewer should be able to get some 'theory of mind' (wiki it) response, it's ostensibly about the facial expression but it's better to let your own subconscious do it for you.

this stuff is called 'acting' in animation i think, so perhaps that might be a good place to look for tips. (perhaps even looking into acting in general would help too)

Very nice concept, but the arms look a little short; when relaxed they should hit just above the half-mark of the thigh generally.

Hands are way too small as well, fingers extended the hand's length should be a third to half the length of the forearm.

Also you might want to be careful with the feature placement of the face before it gets cumbersome.

Try more variation in tones and value as well, and lines and line weight to accentuate the figure or limb's distances and weight.

Not bad anon, but the values are reading very muddy. Everything has the same local value and the value range is too restricted. Also be careful of proportions.

I tried jsut showing a few different local colours instead of everything being a middle grey--I his tunic a white, his hair and gloves black, and then left a middle tone for his skin. Showing some layering to the design helps too--he's got a sorta thing over his shoulders, then his sleeves go down, show his arm underneath poking out, then a big thick leather glove over his hands. At his collar you can see he has some other piece of clothing underneath. And on top of everything I put a couple simple pattern things. A cross type thing on his chest and some line things by the sleeves.

Yeah the dress is definitely on the muddy side (except for the backlit hem). I'd cover it (the dress) in a flat color and start from scratch. It always get muddier when I try to fix it without redoing it. Considering the rest, I'm sure you can manage to find the right solution with enough retries.

work solidy. try not to blend too much. The edgework is one of the beautiful aspects of this portrait. Near the tear duct of the eyes is a really great hard edge, make sure you get that. don't worry too much about the complicated drawing in the collar, it's a pain in the ass to draw, just simplify the rhythym and you can spend time on it in the end if you want.

It's hard to see but the hair is not that black. Lighten it a little. What's going to make it look dark is the lighter value of the background, which you need to put in.

Flip your canvas a lot. What's making the eyes look off is their relationship. They're nearly horizontal or maybe even slightly on a down-right tilt.

Your horizontal-vertical relationships are key to really doing justice to this portrait. One of them that I fixed is the ear, it's really much lower in comparison to the nose.

Really focus in on the angles of the collar, and try to simplify the shape as best you can.

If I say more it'll be too late, haha.

Too much boot up the ass. The pose is cool but maybe show a hint of the toe somewhere if you can. Maybe move the ground guy's shoulder on our right, down a little bit - just enough to where you could see some boot. Alternatively you could move the standing guy around but that could be more work than you want to put into it.
Other than the boot up the ass thing it's alright.Your perspective on that post between buildings is a little weird and it lines up just on the standing guy's shoulders and makes a tangent so you'll want to move that and maybe change some values around to separate them.

I instinct is to push it darker. With the space you've created, it seems like the two shouldn't be equal in intensity.
Another reason why it looks very strange is the doorway (or window, whatever) is not centered on the wall. This makes it read like A, and the connecting wall are closer than the doorway at a glance.

Hey, need some quick help here. When doing a character portrait, should you do the background first?

When I do, I feel like the character "isn't" in that background, you know?

Right now I'm working on pic related, I like the background but I'm not sure if I should start with the character already or what.

Yeah just put the character on a new layer and keep working on it. I think having the bg blocked in loosely like that for general light/colour is good. Once you flesh out the character you can go back into the bg.

This would be good if the shapes where cleaner.

Make the transition of the volumes clear. The things are currently flat shapes make them take form!

Face on both of them look unresolved. Mans torso is tiny almost corset-like. Is he suppoesed to be sexy?

They are both resting their hands in an awkward manner. Try standing for yourself and living into their heads, how would he or she pose? There must be more thought, more idea. Less drawing aimlessly boohoo why does my art not good.

Try this:

Take a piece and set a deadline for working on it, say next monday at so and so pm, you will have a time window now of 20 minutes to do work on it, no more no less. You can open it and plan do studies and figure out what you are going to do with it but you are not to make any actualy changes untill that 20 minute window.

You will have a much greater clarity in your work working this way because your changes are actually premeditated and not aimless (BANISH THE THOUGHT OF WORKING ON SOMETHING JUST TO WORK ON IT)

if this is a concept piece wich i assume based on what's presented why would the focal point be the face of a character.Only reason for you to not do it is if you're pressed for time and you're on the job. Also shading gives volume and form. Wich is ESSENTIAL if this is to be 3d modeled or something of that nature.

the texture, while interesting, is distracting too. you kinda just went ham in the background and left it

>Values
You should mostly concern yourself with the big value shapes. Make them interesting, and make them read. Once that's established, be subtle when refining values within these shapes to not break the big relationships. Look for artists that handle value well, and study their work. Ruan Jia is always good.

>Color
Be aware of the qualities of your light sources (harsh or soft, strong or dull, warm or cool, etc). Learn the difference between specular and diffuse reflections. Try working with a limited palette when first learning color, as you're more likely to get harmonious color relationships.

There are a few good primers on color and light here:
http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm

This is also worth the read, but it's very dense. You'll have to revisit it periodically to absorb anything:
http://www.huevaluechroma.com/

There's also Gurney's Color and Light that's worth the read. A lot of the content is also on his blog if you don't feel like getting the book.
