Really nice man! Next time post it upright and not sideways though.

Just small nitpicks:
-mouth looks SLIGHTLY out of perspective
-contour of far cheek is a bit ambiguous
-shadow shape of the cast on the neck is not a nice shape
-overall can use a bit more variety...different brush sizes, more hue and saturation shifts, more control and hierarchies within things, edges for example (especially where the hair and skin meet, there should be a ton of edge variety there)
-the values around the lips are a bit odd...the cast under the lower lip is very dark, adn that value isn't repeated in the crevasses of either the corners of the mouth or the line where the lips meet. Also the lower lip has the exact same local colour as the rest of your skin, probably it would be a bit darker, redder, and more saturated. This goes the same for the nose and such, or like your jawline might be a bit less saturated and have a very subtle greenish or bluish tinge to it.

you traced this and you colour picked and it still looks like shit. Now i'm going to tell you something very important; there is nothing wrong with cheating, even if you hide it, but it is much harder to do. If you had made an honest effort with this painting you may have come up with an interesting image, instead you have this. Tracing is okay but it is incredibly difficult, it takes many years of drawing to be able to use it effectively in an image such as pic related.

It's completely senseless on a fundamental level. Down facing planes like the brow ridge should be more saturated, not less, because it catches reflected light from the cheeks. Same with the down facing planes of the hair. Using greys and neutrals can be a very effective tool to make a color palette harmonize and appealing to look at, but what that guy did is incredibly ham-fisted and flat out wrong.

I wouldn't call it senseless at all. You have a warm light source as the primary, and strong blue light sources as the ambient. At a base level, this means we should expect saturated warms in the lights, and desaturated cools in the shadows.

I think you might be overstating the effects from bounce light onto the downward facing planes. For regions in shadow the downward facing planes should be warmer than sideways facing planes in shadow. However, all planes in the shadow would probably be notably cooler than those in the light - downward facing or not. Considering the obvious speed that anon spent on the paintover, I'm willing to excuse him for not painting in all of the light subtleties.

The main purpose of the paintover is to show the major light relationships between light and shadow, to show contrast in saturation, and to show depth. For those reasons it's clearly much stronger than the original, which has saturated warms, saturated cools, and no real desaturated colors at all. I think that the solution is pretty elegant, and it should be taken as a starting point towards correcting the piece, not as the final polished result of what it should be. It is an effective block-in.

Oh, and I happened to find a quick render I made a couple of months ago when trying to study different lighting effects. It's not amazing, but I tried to simulate skin through a small amount of subsurface scattering that warmed the shadows a bit towards red. The main light source is warm, and the blue background acts as an ambient light source. It's incidentally similar to anon's original painting. What stands out to me is how grayed the shadows become from the blue ambient light source. Anon's paintover does a decent job of showing a similar effect.

How fucked up am I by trying to draw stylistically then later learning how to draw?

I'm fairly well-recieved among non-artists but I'm pretty sure it's obvious to trained drawing artists that my fundamentals are fucked up. Do I just need practise and referencing?

If anyone is feeling particularly kind and feels like doing their redline, I would really appreciate it.

I mostly doodle headshots with my finger on my phone these days since I rarely have time to sit down and draw.

Thanks guys ;-;

>Any ideas in general for light sources
A light source in a painting can come from literally anywhere. Think of it like a set on a movie. YOU decide where to put the lights. Ideally, you would want the light to come from above. We've spent thousands of years with the light coming above us (the sun). Just look around you and ask where are the lights? They're usually coming from some source above you. Top-lighting is our default scenario. This is not a rule for paintings though! Remember, you control the light.

>Any ideas for how to light the figure in the foreground?
You have light coming from the creature, that is one light source. I would personally put a primary light coming from the front of the guy and creature and use the monsters light as a secondary, weaker light source. Its ultimately up to you.

Yeah, plenty. Just throw a rimlight on it, it'll look amazing. Marko loves doing one somewhat diffuse light source that somewhat hits the entire figure from a nice angle, and one very harsh bright lightsource from the side to create a rim light that highlights certain forms. One warm one cold for best results.

Don't use hard, angular edges when drawing animu. Particularly lips should never be completely closed off, as it makes them look like they're placed on top of the face.
Try to show the facial shapes with fewer lines, and try to squeeze as much information into those lines as possible. This makes it look more feminine.
With guys, this is less important, as they often benefit from extra detail.

just general advice make sure you find a place to do figure drawing every week and observation drawings between semesters of college. there is usually okay focus on life drawing first year of college but it gets away from that very quickly. i went to art school for about 2 years and stopped when we started shifting into projects and stopped with the practice. you won't get good if you take a whole summer off and then just start again. this is what i was drawing in college freshman year. and when i left i started going to figure drawing 3 times a week all year round.

if you feel like they are throwing you into things you aren't ready for like if you need to draw more but they are forcing painting assignments on you you should spend summers doing it instead. art schools can be a bit narrow minded about making you learn everything you need to know in 4 years which is impossible.

its lacking a fair bit in subletly and variation i believe. Even within your shadow zone try to think about what will receive even less light. In regarding to the drawing of the face the ears need to end closer to the base of the nose, and the face is also quite pointy as well, maybe pull it out more like I have. I slightly resized the head of the figure as well as I felt it was pretty tiny in your picture.

I'm not the best with specular reflections/specularity, but it's a way to add some needed variation to your picture. You've added some specularity/highlights to one of the red stripes on the wall, this should be echoed around on other stripes as I've done since those near should be at pretty similar angles to the lightsource.

I've also pushed more depth into the shadow area of the person's cloak, and added a bit of light seeping in as I feel it should be in this scenario

Well that's really it I suppose. Work on getting that spear to look nice and shiny (don't trust mine really). Get variation/depth where you can

I had to colour pick to figure out what light it is and I used that to figure out what complementary color the shadow is based on, if you know that you can basically deconstruct parts of the picture slowly by guessing the colour through observation on the larger areas and then try what happens if you blend it by adding either the colour of the light or the shadow.

The tool I use to pick colours through observation is a paper with different holes in it. James Gurney gave that tip in his book and I highly recommend it. It also helps shutting out the subconscious bias that can seriously fuck up the guess work.

I DON'T KNOW HOW THE FUCK TO CONTINUE.

I'm just so stumped on my drawing process, since I haven't really finished anything in so long. I've mostly only done sketches and the like these days whenever I do happen to pick up a pencil, and I think it's taking its toll on me.
Can anyone offer any suggestions to make this process easier for me?

Pic related, nothing really in order, but different stages I've been at on this fucking drawing. I tried using various methods I've seen and used in the past, half of which I'm clueless about.

Take your image, shrink it down substantially and save it as a new file. On that file, while zoomed out, play around with values, colors, and light sources until you have something good. Don't worry about details or staying inside the lines - be messy. You might not even achieve something appealing on the first try, in which case you might have to do a dozen and pick the best one. These are your color thumbnails.

Once you have a winning thumbnail, use that as a blueprint for painting the fullsize image. Here you can use whatever approach is most comfortable for you, whether it's isolating individual elements with layers and masks, or pasting the enlarged color thumb on a layer underneath the lines and start rendering from there.

If I have time to spare the next days I think I'll do this with a figure from reference and try to work much more cleanly and accurately.

Your robot looks pretty generic, honestly. Try zooming out and playing with the silhouette, and maybe you can get some cool looking legs/hips out of that. As it is now I'd just say to go with some generic loomis skeleton looking legs since the rest of it is leaning that way.

The smell? I don't notice a smell with my eggs. Were you using really old eggs?

Panel preparation - glue/chalk gesso

Separate egg yolk/white
Blend egg yolk with water (~2 pts yolk to 1 pt water, add more water until desirable consistency)
Sometimes, add 1 drop white vinegar (makes yolk mix last so you can save it in the fridge for later

Real mode: Make paste of pigment/water, mix small quantities of paste/egg, and then paint
Lazy/on the road mode: Mix small quantities of tube watercolor with egg
Only mix a little at a time because of the quick dry

Nice linework, the shirt looks like a nice start but you are being lazy again. Either simplifiy it more or do every fold and crumple. (this could be applied to the whole drawing) The eyes look cartoonish. The ear is not bad. It looks like he's holding his severed thumb in his hand. Move it moe to the right. Do you have a reference for this painting? It would help if you had a photo or if the model could come on a regular basis.

Try variation in tones and values, as well as colour temperature. Would really help the shadows. Also, warmth on places like cheeks or eye sockets bring life to the subject, to "paint blood", so to speak. You'll see these bits around joints and sensitive parts around the face.

Looking at the placement of the facial features and construction of the head and face are useful too, for example, the ear is too low. The top of the ear should almost line up at eye level and the bottom should be just around the nose level.

Just saying what I think, hope it helps!
