>#1 - watched 1 render series and "painted" 3 objects. Never rendered anything again until #2.

>#2 - watched the same series and painted 10 - 15 different objects. Forgot most of what I learned because I didn't render anything after that and didn't really understand what I had "learned".

>#3 Current skill level - Got a book that was much more thorough than the video series. Made it halfway through the book then went on to study anatomy more. Have about 10 - 20 rendered objects with varying complexity.

>#4 - Review book and then finish.

I didn't post a timeline because most of this progress was based on a video series that I went over twice and a book that I only went halfway through, and I didn't actually do that many renderings. In total I studied light 3 times with little bursts of actual work right after. The quality of information can help you improve really fast.

Decent progress.Drawing from photographs is a great way to see progress, and make some impressive looking stuff, but I would like to see some of your imaginative drawings.

Now you should try learning some construction techniques to be able to draw from memory. Don't spend too much time drawing from photographs otherwise you run the risk of becoming a copier and not an artist. You're at the point where you can draw what you see to some extent, but if you want to take the next step, try drawing learning how to draw from memory. References should be strictly used for getting detail information, like skin textures, or eye detail, but they shouldn't ever be copied.

Also maybe spend some time learning how to draw hands. You have a decent eye for value and color, but some anatomy and gesture studies would help a lot.

I don't think it gets said enough on /ic/, but I REALLY appreciate your post and advice. It confirmed exactly what I was beginning to suspect of myself. Anyone can copy shapes and render with enough practice. But to be able to compose a scene that takes its viewer into the artist's world is the very human expression I started art for. Thank you for your guidance.

Embarassingly, no book currently. Keys become a bit 'obvious' -- meaning, everything it taught was something I felt like I already knew. Lately I've been studying other artists and watching them paint on youtube. If you're interested, here are some of the more valuable ones:

My thoughts are that you should take drawings further than you do. Currently I see great thumbnail quality work, but nothing finished.

Since you seem to draw from imagination more I completely understand why it's such a test. My suggestion is that you find reference photos that are a 'best fit' to the perspective/angle of your drawing and work on learning the finer anatomical details that really bring a drawing out of the thumbnail zone.
Another thing I learned which seems to instantly give a 'finished' feel to my own work is to use sharper highlights and push the values. Your pic related has quite soft lighting and doesn't make as much use of a full value range.

Let me preface by saying I think you're a better artist than I am, but in the hope that you don't mind I took this into photoshop to demostrate what I'm talking about. I added/sharpened some highlights and heightened the overall range of the drawing.

Or you could look at it being efficient with your time. Have you heard about the saying that you achieve the biggest difference in a painting with the first 20% of the time you put in it, after a while your just rendering without much learning.

>> No.2065417

>>2065414

This. You're better off doing twelve 5 minute studies than one hour long study. Doesn't mean you shouldn't do a finished piece but don't confuse that with a study.

>> No.2065419

>>2065414
>>2065417
But that doesn't mean never produce finished, polished pieces. I think we all agree here that artists should be practicing/studying most of the time unless they're doing professional work. Our point is that it'd be beneficial for the artists here to bring their work to the point of completion more often than they seem to. Otherwise, how do you ever practice those final steps? How do you get portfolio pieces? How do you compare your abilities to that of a professional?

>> No.2065425

>>2065419
Sure i agree with what your saying i learned a lot when i actually had to finish pieces for my portfolio for school. I feel like finishing pieces is something you should really focus on study when you have all the fundamentals in place and soon ready to start working.

>> No.2065428

>>2065425
Agreed. Most of us aren't at the level where we should be polishing pieces more than once in a blue moon. However. how this discussion got started was because I mentioned that I believe >>2065317 *is* at the level where he should be producing more finished works. And who knows, maybe he does.. but I figured those pieces would be on his progress image if so.

>> No.2065456

>>2065414
You can still be efficient with your time on other studies and have one you work on for a few hours every day that you bring to a nice finish, alongside your tons of little studies. Also, it's 75% not 20%. If you get a job and only know how to go 20% of the way on a drawing, you won't work there for long. If you can get 75% done, that's the point where everything else is all fiddling with little details and non-artists won't know the difference between 75 and 100% anyways.

>>2065417
Different strokes for different folks. 1 hour is still pretty short for a study though.

>>2065425
>i learned a lot when i actually had to finish pieces for my portfolio for school.
Exactly. At my school they make beginners start working on that right away along with everything else. It actually helps a lot, which is why I recommend them having something they work on however long it takes to bring it to a finish. Just one piece, it doesn't have to be the only thing they do or the most of their day, but it's nice to have something like that to learn from.
Why?
- You get some awesome problem-solving skills from it. When you work on something for a long time you run into issues you wouldn't have otherwise with a quicker piece. When you learn to deal with those mistakes and never want to make them again, you stop making them. Also, you get quicker.
-There's a difference between turd polishing (polish to hide/distract from mistakes) and working through a process with a piece until it gets to a place where polish is okay. That's what was being discussed. Beginners shouldn't be discouraged from polishing but rather to properly go through all the other stages of a drawing before getting to the details. Details are fun, details are awesome, but they're not first priority.

>> No.2065461

>>2065456
Beginners around here are also way too concerned about speed when they should really be focusing on accuracy. I see it every time we have a study thread, time limit or people limiting themselves. There are times when that's okay but it's after or while learning how to place accurate lines/shapes and forms/values. Most don't do that and that's something that a study taken to the finish addresses as well.

And you learn a lot by doing them. I have with mine, though the downside is sometimes you don't want to fucking look at it or work on that damn thing anymore. But at that point I guess you learn to work through shit, too.

When I draw, I think of it more like a craft than art - not sure if that makes any sense. Anyways this is the most interesting feedback I've gotten in a while...

looks like you are plateauing. you are replacing strong defined planes with a million planes for you're rendering. I think that can be a consequence of working in digital for too long. you don't seem able to just draw a finger. It has to be a million year old finger with wrinkles all over it and a million lines.

>millions

i'd say try not to over render things just because you can. simplify planes more. not everything has to look so old and weathered.

>sorry about 10-11
I deleted all digital copies of my work from this period out of embarrassment and The drives that house them are out of reach.

10-I did a few anime drawings like this from time to time with a mouse and keyboard.

11- Got manga studio and tried to be a manga artist (ugh). The upper left was stolen from a manga I was reading at the time.

12- I started trying to get better. At this point I was using drawing from the right side of the brain and was also teaching myself animation kinda

13- probably my most prolific time. I started doing the /b/ drawthreads and I have a crap ton of folders to show for it. I wasn't doing any studies nor was I bettering myself apart from maybe getting the hang of drawing with a tablet and learning a few coloring tips here and there.
Also was in the process of training for the navy

-14 switched to /ic/ and started focusing on fundamentals. (I'll be uploading a separate post with all my traditional progression) These are the fun cartoon drawings that weren't drawings of feet and gestures
Also dividing my time between navy/drawing is a little tough so I am not nearly as active.

15- just like last year I am not drawing as much and i'm still stagnant. But I am still dedicating almost all of my drawing time to my sketchbook doing studies. But these are the cartoonish things that I did that weren't exercises.

working on my study/model progression now. This is kinda cool. Kinda nice looking back for a change.

>>2071120
lol yes, thx. I have no fixed schedule, but that summer of 2013 I had a part time job and just drew in all my free time. That was probably the biggest leap of improvement I've ever had. This semester I tried to do 4 hours of drawing a day on top of classes, but that was a little overwhelming. I just try and get on average ~3 hours of drawing a day. This past weekend I tested my mettle doing a single 9-5 with an hour and a half lunch. It went pretty smoothly so after school I'm gonna see if I can handle doing that 5 days a week.

>> No.2071130

>>2071124
Some things are smooth. Some things are flat. You aren't going to develop a style through over rendering things and making everything lumpy. That's not style that's just rendering. The planes themselves in your drawings are fairly simple. Don't be afraid to say more with less.

I think more life drawing would be good for you. Get out of your imagination if it is going to lead you to the same image every time right now.

Also if you have aspirations to do concept art nobody will hire you if what you are peddling is things with a million planes and lumps on it. That cannot be made into a 3d object. Think more graphically.

>highly referenced from other artists
Ah sorry man, I've been adding the artist names into my regular posts, and recently I've been trying to do a couple artist studies before combining refs. I'm consciously trying to drop the training wheels.

I forget that new people can easily miscredit my drawings if they aren't familiar with my habits or the original artists. I'll add a disclaimer next time I post a progress update to make sure we are all on the same page.

Im not trying to be sneaky and steal anybody's work - I do appreciate your honesty for pointing it out. It is important for other anons to know where credit is due.

Nothing wrong with this. Some people will have to do head constructions for an entire year before they finally get it down right. Others might only need 5 months before they understand it. Everyone is different and the time it takes for concepts to click will vary with individual people.

Just keep studying and doing work. Enjoy the ride because its a long one.

Learn perspective as well (Erik Olson)

Your values are aaight though.

haha, 2010 was better, in a way

Even though it's a flawed/naive drawing, it's a cute little dog thing with character. The 2014 painting is just a failed attempt at realistic rendering; soulless and unappealing.

buuut I guess if you're just practicing your rendering and stuff, then whatever, just don't lose what was good in the old work

however, when you've been drawing the same character four years in a row, maybe it's time to think about improving your conceptualization skills instead :D

Guurl you need to study basic perspective before starting to hack at the beast which is anatomy. Find some books on perspective drawing but keep up some anatomy learning if you really want. Keep drawing figures as well and watch them slowly progress from 2d to more accurate 3d forms. Good luck pal.

Did these when i was 12-13, i thought they were good but it was around that time i began to consider making true copies is just relying on other peoples art and not your own. Started drawing from imagination then, except for life drawing classes and other school related stuff.
Sometimes i think wasting my time on the internet just slows me down with improving my shit because back then i had no internet or other forms of entertainment to get side tracked, used to be so deprived of drawing..
