How many hours would it take for a complete beginner to become as good as this guy?

I think it's cute, /ic/ needs a few memes to get the dull cleaned out and keep the board entertaining.

What's the point of a guy trying to act cute? He is probably ugly so we can't put him in drags.

>it doesn't go in hours

Sure it does. Its better to think

>oh, I have 2543 hours left, lets get to work and make it 2540 today

instead of

>oh, I wont be good sooner than in 6 months.... well, lets play some DOTA today and draw later

>> No.2069417

>>2069406
no it isn't.

because maybe you should play some dota. you shouldn't be constantly generating anxiety about wasting an hour here or there. it's a long term thing so you should think about it in long terms. it's about management not effort.

>> No.2069420

>>2069417
You wont make it then. No worries though, art is still cool as a hobby.

Why are people trying so hard to force merc wip guy?

>> No.2069429

Mercwipguy here...in case you are serious and not a troll, here is my answer: I'd been painting digitally for about 4.5 years or so when I did that image. Did a bit of drawing before then of like Bridgman copies mostly. Within that entire timeframe there were several instances where I didn't do art for months at a time for various reasons (from playing on my national water polo team to having severe and crippling depression). I also was in high school for a good couple of those years so could only put in so much time each day. And I don't think I studied as efficiently as I could have. So all in all, probably it could be done in under 2 years if you study smartly.

>>2069366
I've never posted the image on the board other than the first time it was posted, which was I think a day or two before someone else pretended to be me and made it into the meme it is.

>>2069406
This is just a matter of opinion and depends on the person. Personally, I find thinking in hours like that is counterproductive. From the people I've seen who track their hours religiously and fully follow the whole 10k hour rule, they tend to not improve as much as other people. They see art as a grind and just pump out hours. Better to think a lot and draw a bit than it is to draw a lot and not think much. All these time measurements are guesses anyways since people develop at different rates and everybody learns differently and has different goals and so and so on.

>> No.2069445

>>2069420
i'm sure the death spiral of anxiety and procrastination will serve you well my friend. good luck with all your artistic endeavours ;D

(but serious if counting hours works for you more power to you)

>>2069406

If you still play video games you're probably not serious about art anyway.

What do you think of your work becoming so famous on /ic/? Do you laugh when you see the "show your work" followed by merc_wip meme?

>> No.2069503

>>2069469
My opinion on it changes? Same with any meme, it is funny at first but then gets tiresome when it gets overused, then it gets funny again after some time. And of course sometimes it is funnier than others, it depends on the context. Personally I tend to enjoy the ones where they made some effort to change it--the squished head version, the crab mullins version, that pencil one etc, even the one you posted. Makes it a little funnier somehow to me. Or that guy who 3d-ified it. Probably there are some more I am forgetting.

I guess the only thing I don't like is that it seems a lot of people still think I'm an asshole with an ego and was the original person who posted it as merc_wip. They don't realize the actual story and see me as this giant dick. So when that happens I sometimes chime in and explain the backstory. Not that many people were here for the start of it, and while the original threads are archived it is a bit of a mess to read through them given their length and the anonymity making it hard to tell who is saying what exactly.

I also think that the image is a good way for diverting the argument of forcing someone to post their work. While there is some correlation between your work and your knowledge, not every critique needs to be from a pro to be valid. In the same way not everything a pro says should be just accepted blindly. We should take every comment with a critical eye, and decide for ourselves whether it is legitimate or not.

Hm, other than that, I guess I'm a bit saddened when someone posts it and then a few people new to the board who have never seen it respond seriously. I think it works best when it is a known meme.

And yeah I dunno, it's funny that it's what I am most known for here. I guess that's what happens when you post without a trip--the anonymity means I can't take credit for other contributions I've made here (and I have contributed in so many ways and to a great extent, far far more than most people realize).
