He's kinda got some odd proportions. I feel like you are getting ahead of yourself. You want to get to the awesome armor before you figure out anything else. Take into perspective what he looks like underneath. Draw him first as a nude buff dude and work out his proportions, then add the armor onto that. It doesnt have to be anything refined. Just an accurate, thought out take of the human body. Also remember that anything in a scene sits in some sort of perspective to its surroundings.

I'm no stranger to human anatomy. I've done pictures of naked buff dudes so many times that I'm afraid that my parent's will look at me funny if I let them see my sketchbook. However, this dude's proportions (specifically the shoulders and chest size compared to the head) are exagerated for effect. However, while redlining this to show that a human could correctly fit in there, I did notice that the left (our right) leg is definitely out of proportion, with the thigh being too long / shin being too short

>> No.2065577

Not the guy your asking but its pretty simple, for a tighter shirt the breast will be pushed together more, for loose clothing they would move more freely unless a bra is worn. I can try and put something quick together.sorry if my explanation sucks, Im not much of a teacher.

There's nothing special happening there. He's basically just doing the following:
-loose lines on a toned background
-local colours
-indication of light and shadow
-knocks in darkest darks (occlusion stuff mostly since local values are there already)
-detailing focal point (face)
-works whole canvas more to unify things, adds in more details like the triangle thing on the ground and whatnot
-further works the whole, boosts saturation and values and such on entire image, probably using a large airbrush and different layer blending modes.

Could be a few problems, but mostly using believable values and using the correct edges. You should treat the background as an ambient light source. This means that if your background is red, you should have diffuse red light illuminating your forms. If you have other stronger light sources, then the reds will mostly be present in the shadows and not the lights.

Think of it like painting an outdoor scene. An object in the shade is light mostly by ambient blue skylight (ignoring other bouncelight sources). Get rid of the shade and now you have the sun acting as a strong primary light source, and the blues are really only visible in the shadows (ignoring specular reflections). Most surfaces have some level of specular and diffuse reflections, so you should get blue specular highlights even in the light in a scenario like I mentioned.

And here's an exercise so that you can observe this effect better:

Get a large box, and remove the top and front face. Line with with a black cloth, place a simple object inside, and light it up with a lamp. Try to have no other light sources in your nearby environment. Paint that object.

Now replace the black cloth with a bright red one, but keep everything else the same. Paint the object again. Next replace it with white cloth and paint again. You can go through a few more times with different colored cloths and still have similar results.

If you know 3D software (blender works), you can try this same experiment digitally. Just change the colors of the walls of the box, and save the resulting rendered image. You technically don't even need to build the box, as you can adjust the global illumination color (the color of the default background) to anything you want and it should affect the lighting and colors of your object.

I made an example in the past in pic related. The first frame has a single light source, a black ground and a black environment. All the rest have a gray environment, which introduces some light as seen in frame 2. The other frames only have the ground color changing. For your purposes, you want to consider the simple background you paint as the environment, but be mindful of your ground plane too if you're implying one.

How did u color this?
Markers + colored pencil?
Is this a scan?
What kind of paper did you use?

Personally, I've never had any luck with CP + markers on copy paper, but I hear that they work will with paper that has more bite, like canson.

The colors look a little flat, if you have the markers try to vary the hues a bit for shadows, or just photoshop it.

But looks pretty good, always like seeing traditional stuff

If you wanna go for something more over-the-top, like what I posted... well idk exactly, honestly I'm amazed at the level of work their artists can create. Really imaginative designs. Though I do know they work wit sillouettes a lot.

But as far as what "good design" is, it's very subjective. I personally like more over-the-top designs so long as they make sense. Others like more simplistic designs that are more akin to what you find irl.

stuff like
photoshop layer properties(blend modes)
making and using brushes
properties of brushes
all of this you can learn without a tablet

However, is learning how to make, and having different brushes really all that useful?

the knight guys arms are not relaxed, they are proped forward.
look at the left one (his right) , it really should be behind the belt bags and besides the hips.
but instead you have chosen to show off the arm armour.

Alright, yeah, I see it. But all that can easily be fixed with a full frontal view if I so want to.

However, that doesn't fix the fact that it's not as visually impressive as what I posted for comparison.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I wanna up my presentation.

I understand that there are some minor mistakes in construction. I just haven't drawn in a while, but that's a problem that will fix itself from doing more live drawings with models. It just takes time.

However, when it comes to color and linework and the like for concept art, that's something that takes specific study.

I think the biggest thing is that by comparison, my lineart is just not as detailed and extensive, and I wanna correct that.

The amount of thought put into accurately describing the planes in value and the shadows is awesome, great job on that. It's far from perfect but you are definitely on your way.

Theres some serious readability issues in the lower third of the painting though, can barely make out the dude. Control your contrast better in that area.

Good start man. You need to realize that the right plane of her face is extremely stretched and we're seeing too much of the right side of her face and the back her head, same goes for the right arm/lats/trap. Her neck is a little twisted as well. I don't think she looks like a man at all i don't understand the criticism regarding that.

lots of excuses you have there anon.
the construction and fundamentals in your work are lacking and only more drawing/failing will correct that.
as far as line strength.
your line weight and steadyness need lots of attention.

the image has a very ambiguous feel to it when adressing the overall gravity and aplication of weight. the feet are on two different planes.
the figure is literally leaning back whilst still standing up-right. as if he has just compleated an air thrust with his pelvis, but whilst still having both arms from their sockets being infront of the torso.

the hands.
i think you know what has to happen there.

try to go for lines in one stroke.
you are prawing. not painting. the background is white, so you should not be playing a game of small strokes to render a finished edge.

one edge = one stroke.
turn up your stabilizer if you must.

you are being quite reserved with your colours aswell. try to draw onto a grey background and then block the image in with a darker grey , then asses it and work back in highlights.

>gif related, its how working from grey scale can help with geting colour values down a little easyer. its still a noob tactic but if helps.

> You need to realize that the right plane of her face is extremely stretched and we're seeing too much of the right side of her face and the back her head

shit I actually did realise this earlier and thought I fixed it, but it's still fucked

> same goes for the right arm/lats/trap
She's supposed to be twisting her torso a bit to show off her joocy back but then yea.....she wouldn't be able to look back that much then

As for the face I was just tryna make her face a bit angular but I did give her a big jaw and chin haha

hmm gonna have to repaint a lotta shit

I can see that perspective is a bit fucked on it's body but it's a one layer painting so it's no so easy to just redraw, i'll try to liquify my way out of this and to make the dudde more contrast somehow.

Maybe I'll DoF the far trash for more feeling of volume. I normally hate DoF but everyone seems to like it.

Thanks very much for your input.

I find it that I have MUCH more trouble keeping a stable line when drawing in digital than in traditional. What exactly is the stabilizer?

What I used to do was make all lineart in traditional, and just scan it, however, since that takes too long, and I wanna improve is my digital I've opted for doing lineart on the Bamboo.

I'm looking into getting a Cintiq soon, but in the meantime, if there are other options it'd be great.

As for everything else you've adressed, yeah, I make no excuses. It seems I've regressed a little since I've had not much time to draw nor do studies.

As for the colors. Is that technique ideal for concept art? Most of what I've seen has little to no value to it.

Oh man, THIS so much.

I think it just goes to show the vast amount of inknowledgable amateurs here.

They believe anatomy and perspective are the end-all and be-all to art, yet hardly take, proportion, composition, color, and all of the other fundamentals into account.

Anatomy and perspective are always the first steps anyone ever takes when venturing into art education. So it just lends credence how little most people know here.

They can only talk the talk, but hardly really ever offer anything more useful than a couple redlines.

Hell, anatomy isn't even as useful as proportion when it comes to character design. Yet, /ic/ is so narrowminded when it comes to this, they don't even realize how limited their views are.
