I don't post so much these days. Mostly my stuff gets ignored when I post or I get into fights with people where all that happens is I get insulted and stuff and people shit talk my work or call me a noob. It feels like I waste a lot of energy here for no reason sometimes. Especially since I'm already doing weekly therapy to help with my lack of confidence in my art, those types of threads don't really help me. The community here can be a bit toxic (it goes through ups and downs, and at the moment is in a bit of a down). Honestly it's no surprise that pretty much all the best artists here have left or only post rarely. I don't even use a trip like a lot of them, so I am less of a target too. So rather than posting multiple times a day like I used to, now I might pop in once every few days quickly to skim for any interesting threads and that's it.

I think those files are more like a year ago actually? And yeah, I consider myself self-taught. I did go to Sheridan for Illustration but dropped out near the end of first year since I didn't like it and felt I wasn't learning there. I got my tablet in December 2009, if that helps your timeline. I did a bit of drawing before that, nothing too serious though, little bit of pencil copies of Bridgman and that's about it. So I've been at it for maybe like 6 years or so, but there were some periods in there where I wasn't doing art for months or weeks at a time due to depression and stuff (worst was an 8 month period). Honestly if you have good work ethic and are smart about how you approach and learn art, then I am confident you can overtake my skill level in a smaller amount of time. If you average out the hours I put in, it probably only works out to an hour or two a day at most over all that time.

I was referring to the man's and the bat's. The latter counts because the artist went out of his way to make its color unrealistic and too saturated. Some bats do have pinker noses but that's way overstated. Pigs have tumblr noses IRL so it's ok.

Yeah I mean I've been posting on 4chan for a few years now. I probably have one or two thousand posts on /ic/. There is a lot of just noise as you say, but there also are people who do personally attack others and are unnecessarily rude or aggressive, and then it is easy to get into arguments if you're having a bad day. It also is really tiresome defending opinions when they go against the hivemind (which many of my opinions do). I dunno, this place does wear down on you over time and I think most good artists eventually outgrow the community and closeminded and negative mindsets that are prevalent here. I mostly post to help others out since there isn't much else I can gain from coming here other than sometimes some good resources or rarely a useful crit. It's annoying though when you help people or try to give advice then have people insult you and say you don't know what you are talking about and so on.

imo the biggest problem with the mindset here is a severe lack of humility. Most of the people who post here are barely above beginner level but they honestly think they're too good to learn from any particular artist, which is so short-sighted. Hardly anyone is at a point where they should be worried about what long-term effects it's going to have on their art, they should be looking at any and every way other people are using lines and color to convey images whether it's stylized or realistic, building up a visual library and a feel for it that they can use later. As long as they do their figure studies diligently, even studying Dobson won't leave them the same as him. I've said it before, it's like hanging from a cliff and only choosing the prettiest handholds to save your life with - you'll just get tired and fall.

"Tumblr nose" exists in real life to some degree beyond drunks and people in cold places. Someone who is supposed to be "cute" will have a pinker hue on their nose and cheeks, and someone who works in the sun will have a pinker nose too, as the nose takes the brunt of sunrays and will end up looking redder than the rest of the face.

One thing /ic/ categorically fails as is understanding design decisions and knowing the difference between "it's shit" and "I get what they were going for but it doesn't appeal to me.

Cylinders, spheres, and cubes.

If it's round (cheeks, cranium), use a sphere.
Round but elongated (thigh, upper arm), use a cylinder.
Not round (jaw, male pelvis, heel), use a cube.

All shapes should be subject to a little deformation, as they're only used to 'rough out' the major volumes of a complex form. Once they're in place it's up to you to sculpt them as need be in order to end up with a finished work.

I did the demon girl thing, and I kinda suck at construction. The legs on the lower right show what I do. Or at least what I used to do. My lines are less messy now, compared to when I made that.
The biggest problem I have is going from construction to a finished image, so that's something I'm still working on. Need to use more reference, as I've unfortunately relied on not using it far too much.

The point is that the only legit critique there was something you would get here too. Flip your image, etc. Aside from those two or three posts, which I abbreviated, the others are literally just unwarranted compliments, internet hugs. I didn't remove the critique from them, there was no critique.

Obviously it was a better place back then. Have you read the Mullins Sijun pdf? It's a goldmine. There's a reason a ton of big name guys like Jaime, Maciej, and John Liberto all grew out of that site. You also had other people than Mullins who contributed, you had Sparth, Scott Robertson, and Ron Lemen among others.

The last few years though the entire site is dead as can be, and really the only last bit of life there is the monstrously long Speedpaint Thread, but even that is just a trickle of what it used to be.
