Vary your line weight. When you have all the lines the same thickness and darkness, the drawing feels flat and dead.

Typically you want the darkest lines on overlapping forms (closer to the camera = darker line , farther into space = lighter and smaller lines) and around the silhouette (Darker closer to camera , lighter going into space). For small details in your picture like wrinkles on the face, cloth, hair strands etc, you want small, light lines.

Also study facial anatomy more. You had some weird stuff going on with the nose and eyes.

And play around with the framing. In the original you had a lot of empty space to the right of the character so I cropped it and added a bit of head room so it wouldn't feel so cramped.

remember the depth of the nose when drawing the eyes to avoid this
The dragon looks cool, the wings could use a bit of work
I would guess she's on fire, but you've lit them with a cool highlight in inconsistent places

Other than that, I like the idea. The hair is well rendered and I appreciate the detail under the chin, and the colors for the most part work well together. Good job.

I like them. The first could use some breaking up of the darks from the mids. At least on my monitor they all read as darks and it's hard to discern what's going on.

Proportions still have issues. Head is small, neck is nonexistent, hands might be a bit small.

Are you drawing with a clear horizon in mind? Do you have an established ground plane to plant the feet?

I suggest striking the pose yourself and grabbing a camera to get some refs. Be sure to set the camera at the right eye level that you want. You might as well simulate the attire with bed sheets or towels, and set the light sources like how you plan on having them. This way you can not only extract information about the pose, proportions and perspective, but lighting and fabric as well.

Spend more time on the drawing/sketch rather than the painting. It's much, much easier to fill in a good sketch than it is to move on to rendering too early.

Don't blame the brush. It's more so the artists fault than it is the brushes fault.

i try not to be precious with the proportions or placement of features. i think its more important to just capture likeness in the facial features and the planes of the face. i usually look at this painting whenever i feel like im being too strict about how people look. even with the one i posted i was being too strict i think.

Your rendering and colors aren't too bad in this painting, but he honestly just looks like a disfigured human. Rather than coming off as exaggeration, or stylization, your drawings just look amateurish, and show off how bad you are at human anatomy. You can't "capture likeness" without knowing basics first. You've probably heard the "learn the rules first before breaking them" spiel tons of times, but that doesn't stop it from being true.

there's lots of ways of doing soft edges which don't require a soft brush, i think if i recall there's 7 actually.

i'll see which i can remember,

1. graded
2. jagged
3. stippled
4. fly-away
5. hatched
6.one where you use lines of varying width going in the direction of the edge
and um,
7.i think the last one is actually just blending.

so there you go.

i hope that serious of words without explanation will help you. for some reason /ic/ doesn't know about the 7 edges only the hard-soft-lost continuum.
