Post suggestions/References i could use to better myself

Draw people you don't find particularly attractive
That way you can focus on accuracy

If you can draw what you see in front of you (without tracing, that is), you're on your way to drawing what you see in your mind.

If you stay in your comfort zone you won't get better.

Don't think that you can just read a tutorial and get it right on your first go. It takes lots and lots and LOTS of practice.

Get yourself a skull. I got mine for a about 30 bux and study the shit out of it. Or you can use http://www.anatomy360.info/skull-sketcher/
Just start getting comfortable with proportions.

Get the book by Gary Faigin
http://www.garyfaigin.com/book.html
I know it's expression but whats really cool about it is that he doesn't teach you how to draw like Looms but rather just breaks the head down to facial features and how they work. It's also a nice read.

Also start studying planes/rythms of the face. This helped me to try to put it all together and help me with lighting.

You're like an oasis of good advice on a dessert of pointless noise.

Start by drawing some skulls.

Go find an anatomical model including facial muscles and layer those on top of the skull.

Now go draw skin on top of it.

At this point your paper should looks like a clusterfuck of pencil marks.

Now draw the exact same final product again but only demarcate specific planes. The cheekbones are raised, the forehead slants back, the eyes are sunken and have little > shaped indents towards the temples, etc.

The end result should look like a medium-poly render of a human face.

Now place features, modify expressions, etc.

>I want to stay away from anime and go with my own thing

Search good animators' model sheets on pinterest, drawings with the head from different angles, and focus on these things studying them:
Don't overdo construction: you can make nice heads with simple basic shapes.
Perspective and volume are crucial: features are 3d shapes and so they have volume, they don't sit on a flat surface too.
Proportions and rhythm: features are related to each other.
Don't overdo construction: seriously.

Studying: I mean understanding how the artists solved problems, e.g. The artist drew a face with squared eyes and I like them, but how the artist drew those eyes in a 3/4 view?
I put those model sheets on PureRef and when I draw I occasionally watch them to see how to draw something or to see if I draw something better.
