Well I have gotten pretty good with drawing disembodied hands but now I'm still not good at drawing hands on people. They are either two big or small or just plain awkward and unnatural looking. Like what do I do with the hands?

It would be nice in drawing books for sections where they break down parts of the body to right after ward apply them to an actual full figure for dumb guys like me. Like okay you spent an hour drawing hands now here is what they look like on people to scale now draw that for another hour, great!

You need to learn about proportions, man. Hit up some anatomy books for artists or just observe it yourself.

When the arms are straight to the sides, the fingertips will hit at about mid-thigh. One hand's length is about 3/4 of the forearm. Hands are about the same size as the face.

It's just relationships between one thing and another. And they're going to differ a little between people, too. But it's good to look up what the average is and keep it in mind.

What are some good places to purchase plaster casts of heads, torsos, and other anatomic references?
I currently have a 6" David and Ceasar head that fit nicely on my desk. I don't think I could fit a 24" inch torso study on my desk, so anything small would work great.

Get some courses/worksops/books whatever and follow those on whatever subject if you are starting and already can copy reality at least decently
when you concentrate anatomy and perspective are good continuation points. Michael hampton, scott robertson, gary meyer vilppu, loomis are all good choices

I already asked this question in the previous question thread but no one could help me. I am looking for a book or video that explains how to keep proportions when drawing something from a different view, in perspective. All the stuff i have seen only explain how to get the lengh of the object but never the width or height.
It has been bothering me for many days now, please help.

Probably a weird question, but when it comes to pencil leads like HB and softer, how sharp do you keep your pencil? It gets dull and gives different thickness and lineweights in the drawing, until you sharpen it. And I noticed every artist sorta does it differently.

>And I noticed every artist sorta does it differently.
Pretty much, and it varies by the types of marks you want to make.

I pretty much exclusively use 4B leads, and I like the point where it's slightly worn after being freshly sharpened. Often times I accidentally make a chisel tip from drawing, and then I quickly have access to varying thick and thin lines just by rotating the pencil a bit.

Disclaimer: I pretty much only sketch traditionally, and my line quality is lackluster at best.

maybe kind of a dumb question but i want to study skin/color.
what would be the best approach?
do i just try to copy as best as i can refrences and then colorpick and see where i was off and try again?
should this second try be another copy or should i do one from imagination but keeping in mind what i did good and what i did wrong the first time?
if so shouldnt i just color pick from( to know how saturated it goes to the shadows, hue shifts, etc. so not directly colorpicking and painting) the start and go directly to do one from imagination but keeping in mind hue shifts, etc?
also, what kind of pictures are best to study this? how can you tell its a good one and not a photshopped?

Super Sculpey is great. Very versitle, and you can bake pieces in a conventional oven (safe at the correct temperature, but I wouldn't bake sculpey while cooking food in there).

For bigger sculptures you'd have to make an armature, and possibly use foil as a filler for the core.

There are many ways to go about learning skin and color. I first recommend learning how light works:

http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm
>General primer

http://www.huevaluechroma.com/
>Practically everything you need to know about light. It's complex, so you'll have to revisit it often

Color and Light by Gurney
>Talks about various lighting phenomena. A lot of the material can be found on his blog too

First, you want to learn how to paint diffuse (matte) objects under various lighting conditions. Learn what happens when you use white light on an orange ball, and what happens when you use different colored lights.

Next, learn about specular reflections.

Third, learn about lighting effects that pertain to skin. This includes accounting for the subtle translucency of skin, as well as subsurface scattering. It also helps to learn about how skin hues tend to fluctuate, where that happens, and why.

Lastly, you can use the eyedropper tool to confirm what you learn on photos. Don't worry about pixel by pixel fluctuations, but instead focus on the average color for spots. Try to do studies without color picking from your reference. Do studies of photos, and master paintings too. Try to think about the light sources, and why colors are the way they are. I recommend getting experience painting skin from life. Have friends or family sit for you while they're reading or watching tv. Self portraits from a mirror also work well.

>> No.2044970

>>2043623
You probably need to learn the musculature, and pay close attention to the bones of the knees. Most artist anatomy resources will walk you through where muscles attach and what they do (Vilppu, Hampton, Bridgman, Peck, etc).

Basically speaking, you want to learn the skeleton first - mostly the major forms, proportions, and a few landmarks where muscles attach. If you can draw that well, and you know where the major muscle groups attach and insert (easy to look up on wikipedia), you can build up the leg from the skeleton.

When I need the lines to be even thickness I just keep turning the pencil while drawing. Helps providing an average fine line. So when it starts getting dull, rotate a bit.

I also like to have a piece of very fine grain sanding paper or rough and dry aquarell paper to sharpen my soft pencils (2b-11b) and for the hard ones I use a faber-castell portable sharpener. They are the best in my opinion.

When I'm doing live figure drawing, I get proportions very much wrong. I think I draw too big overall and have trouble estimating measurements and sometimes ignore the perspective shift where what's closest to your eyelevel, usually the midsection, is larger than the extremities, because I don't want it looking fisheye-y and also because I tend to make my heads already too small.
Practicing with pictures it's a lot easier (because it's smaller duh) but live drawing is so hard and I feel like I'm just repeating the same ugly, unproportional shit drawings and making the same mistakes.

How do I stop bad drawing habits? like scribbling without thinking about form and perspective; or resorting to the same face/same pose; uninspired drawing. i.e. Where do i get good draftsmanship? I'm consulting loomis again, but it's not helping.

I feel as if I'm a beginner again; like I've suddenly lost all my art gains (or maybe they never existed in the first place). This is a very spooky phenomenon for me; i hope some of you d/ic/ks can relate and give advice.

>> No.2046418

>>2046402
The scribbling really isn't a bad thing so long as you consider it gesture, then once your done you check proportions, then use construction and perspective.

As for the same face, look at different faces from other artists you admire. Read that "FORCE" boom on character design if you have to. We learn best from imitation though, so just imitate different faces that you like. We get it in our heads that we can't use reference when really we are just cheating ourselves.

>> No.2046432

>>2046402
A lot of that stuff depends on what you're doing. What are you drawing when you scribble and don't think about form and perspective?

>>2046418
Scribbling during gesture can be considered drawing on autopilot. It's actually not a good thing unless you're doing an exercise to loosen up, but that shouldn't last the whole session either. When you do gesture you actually do analyze the figure a lot more than you'd think.

As for the faces, instead of looking at faces from other artists, you kinda.. you know, study lots of different people's faces.

Otherwise you've got good advice.

>> No.2046454

>>2046432
I suppose it depends on what you're going for. I personally go for a stylized look so, while I jumped through the hoops and already did my life studies, I tend to look at other artists I admire for reverence and sort of blend them together in a way I like. Most of the better comic artists do this as well choosing to learn from art rather than life. Of course, if your going for realism and a more painterly thing, everything is different. It's just crazy how many "rules" and approaches there are to everything.

And yeah, scribbling is mostly for quick gestures, I usually use a very basic looking construction method with general shapes and a line of action, but a lot of good manga artists use the scribble method damn near constantly.

As I said, tons of valid ways to tackle this shit, though it was my bad for assuming he was going the stylized route.

If not, please let me know what I can do to make my practicing more efficient. I don't have a chance with formal education on the matter for a couple of months, so I really could use your guys' help.

hi /ic/ i got a problem with my intuos CTH-480 driver. it won't detect my tablet automatically and requires me to restart my PC (sometimes more than 1 time) before it could start working.

i have asked this question before on the tablet thread, they told me to completely uninstall the driver and install a different version of the driver from the wacom site, i did..

...yet the problem still persists. it's still nowhere as 'plug-and-play' as it's supposed to be.. now it's more like 'plug-restartyourPC3times-and-play'

I have unlimited time to draw. I sketch at least two hours daily but on an average day I'll draw six to sometimes twelve hours.
And I think I fucked that up

I went to a local community college to get information and forms for admission. I thought I'd enroll this summer to start my remedial courses, figuring it would be two classes a week for the semester and be on track for my AA this fall.
Turns out I don't need those classes and I can go straight into general studies. This is a problem because I wasn't planning on going right to being a full time student.
Classes start early may. I have surgery at the end of this month.

What should I do? Should i bring supplies with me and do life drawing while I have the free moment on campus?

This school has an arts program, but not at the campus I'm attending. That campus is an hour away and has student housing but my boyfriend needs me here to support our home. So I'm conflicted on that.

The terminator looks like it could be a bit harder. The shadow region of the ball should be larger if you're going for a light source light the sun as your primary - right now it looks like a wide light source like blue skylight. For light sources like the sun, exactly half of the sphere would be in light and the other half in shadow (in 3d space).

The cast shadow could soften a bit as you get further away from the ball. I think it also needs a stronger occlusion shadow where the ball meets the ground. I think the point where the cast shadow meets the terminator is correct, but we might get the shadow to extend further down at it's midpoint due to the curvature of the sphere.

Overall it seems alright for a matte object. I'm not sure how you approached it, but if you go about painting light sources individually (and even on separate layers), it's much easier to get correct. Start with your ambient light sources (fill light), then paint in your primary light source (key light) on top, then lastly add in the bounce light. If you have any specular reflections, I'd do that separately after all the diffuse are painted in.

The perspective on your block is broken. Also, there's a cool little exercise so that you can figure out how light or dark a plane should be:

Note that a sphere can be thought of as being made up of lots of smaller planes (think like a 3D render). The more planes present, the closer you get to what looks like a smooth sphere.

If you draw a small sphere off to the side and render it under the exact same lighting conditions (like your first image), you can then locate a given plane on your sphere that corresponds to a plane on your object. That will tell you what value it needs to be.

For the block, you'd want to find on your test sphere a plane facing upwards, a plane facing forward and a bit to the left, and a plane midway between facing the front and facing the right.

If you want any of that stuff in a lot more depth, try to get your hands on Advanced Lighting with Sam Nielson. cgp should have it

I found this video that has helped, but I more specifically wanted to know how to do really tight looking cars etc. like how Scott Robertson does. I can do that traditionally but its a real struggle to do it on Photoshop I don't know the correct techniques and need some video tutorials showing me how it's done because the method seems to be a bit different.

Reduce features into basic shapes.
In order for a form to read correctly, the shadow must be tracked along the form correctly.

So, get some matte geometric shapes and a flashlight and see how cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, etc work under direct light, and study how shadows are created.

THEN, take that knowledge and shove it into anatomy. What is the most basic form of the arm? A cylinder. How about the bicep? That's kind of like half of an egg shape. What about the torso? Well, that's basically a rectangle that can twist and bend at the center.

Being able to understand basic forms and figuring out which forms apply to which muscle is, truly, the only way you'll be able to "correctly" render accurately.

(I say "correctly" because as long as you know what you're doing, you can purposely make something look wrong but make it look realistic)

You got a few choices:

1. Find a fixative that doesn't alter the color/image in a way you don't want it to. Different brands may have different effects. This is your BEST option. There is literally nothing you can do for your drawings that preserves them better than fixative. Maybe step back more so the spray doesn't blow as hard. Do a few light layers with time to dry in between each application and then go in and make corrections, the fixative layer should help the new charcoal "stick" a little better. Test brands on scraps of paper and scribbles to see the effect it has before committing to a finished piece.

2. Frame is ASAP. Once it's behind glass/plexi it should be safe from bad touches and whatnot. However movement, vibration and temperature change can still affect the drawing. Triple mat it so it doesn't rub against the glass. Try not to move it too much and transport flat.

3. Store in a flat drawer large enough to accommodate your drawing and put a layer of glassine paper over it. Disturb it as little as possible. If you want to take it out a lot to look at/show people, see 1 or 2.

This might be a really silly question, but I have a 2 hour life drawing session in 30 minutes. How do I quickly change sheets when the poses change, especially for the shorter poses? Splitting happens, though good brush care will prolong the lifespan of the brush.

>After buying the brush: rinse in cool to lukewarm water to wash off the gum which is applied to the bristles for protection and presentation. Avoid excessive pressure or you will damage them. Let dry.

>Do not leave a brush standing in water when you are not painting. Allowing it to remain damp between sessions can promote decay of wood and hair inside the ferrule.

>After cleaning, form the hair into a straight pointed shape by lightly drawing the brush between the thumb and adjacent two fingers from ferrule to tip. Do not squeeze, wring, grip or tug. Stand the brush with the tuft upwards where it can dry naturally.

>While painting or cleaning, do not press the brush down so hard that the hairs are forced out at a sharp angle to the ferrule.

>Do not allow paint to dry on the brush

>Extend the lifespan of your brush by avoiding harsh cleaning agents, try using just water or a small amount of conditioning hair shampoo

>Pay attention to the area where the hair enters the ferrule. Allowing paint to accumulate here will cause the tuft to splay permanently.

2 helpers:
- Split what you want up into smaller parts and remember how you draw the simpler parts and how and if they relate to each other.
- Use and make references. This allows you to jump between topics. External visual memory beats internal visual memory. Examples are character sheets and concept art. Make sure the references help you to get back into drawing something.

Hope that helps more.

I'm a beginner, practicing for like 10 hours a day, 7 days a week currently, and I began to notice a few days ago that I was starting to get this sort of 3D tunnel vision when getting really in depth with a drawing. I could really wrap my head around forms and surfaces as I drew, as if I were physically in its 3D space... kinda like working with clay. But the moment my focus wavered I'd get sucked back into myself just drawing forms on a 2D screen.

I was wondering if anyone with experience can relate to this sort of "stepping into your artwork's 3d space" feeling? Or if it's just a side effect of my entire life basically being art? I have to admit it's pretty cool and certainly makes drawing more intuitive.

Dumb question, just erase it and re-do it until it is fine, since this is CG it will cause no damage to the final piece. And sketches are meant to be somewhat messy. My view on stabilizers is this, tablets are shit. They will fuck up for whatever reason while you're pulling a line it might not be your fault it might just see that depends is just a little bit too far left when it should of been a little more to the right and I'll make a straight line a little crooked the stabilizer stabilizes it it normalizes all the input data that it receives. If you abuse the hell out of it it takes something out of your drawing and the people know when you do it, it only hurts yourself in the end if you use it too much. However she just put a little stabilization on their just to even out the rough edges of what a tablets input is it's a perfectly fine tool.
And when you talk about photo bashers, most people aren't thinking that their part of the industry and they have to do that for the time constraints there given. it probably wouldn't be a great way to study perspective, and the warping is mostly due to the field-of-view, but I don't think it would hurt, just keep in mind what your drawing might not be accurate to real life. I believe that the skills that you would learn it even if the perspective is an accurate could still be applied to real-life accuracy.

that shit is fucking expensive online, I can't imagine where you live it be any cheaper. I'd suggest finding other ways to get your pencil to and that shape, as the reason they suggest that conte pencil is because they are able to consistently sharpen a pencil to that type of a point with it while being able to get very dark Blacks.

if you do the Watts course make sure you get a screen capture program up and record with videos while you're watching them, you don't have to distribute them to us though that would be a massive plus, but this is more just so you have the videos after the one month is up and you can set unsubscribe from it. Yes the Watts would be easily be worth it. While you're recording it just don't... Don't make it seem like you're just watching the videos to record them, they check for that. Just record what you're watching while you're watching it normally.

the look at your activity, if you are just bouncing from one video to the next and never rewatching one, and then that sends up a red flag you also send up a red flag with bandwidth used.

personally i would email them about it up front from a dummy account and ask them.

tell them something like you want to bounce around what you have access to but are unsure if they would set off a red flag of some kind and see how they respond to that.

the watts online course has something like 1500-2000 hours of material, though not all drawing... but from what i am told the drawing tutorials are extensive because of the way they teach drawing is suppose to mimic painting so the skills are very transferable... you would rather use newsprint and a pencil than a canvas/board/whatever and paint thats 10$+ a tube.

well... commission work you charge minimum wage + material cost up front for the time, and than on completion you charge what you think your skill is worth...

it really all depends on who you are working with... are they a big enough group to pay you well or are they going to cut it close to minimum wage?

i would personally have 12$ and hour as a bare minimum and up to 25-30$ an hour at the higher end.

are you able to quote them a number and tell them if that doesn't work for you can you give me a number and ill see if i can work within that budget.

just a heads up, if they are small they may be hoping you under sell yourself and end up working for less than minimum wage.

>>2056617
