Does anyone here do storyboarding or want to? Recommended books or exercises? I've seen some people do frame-by-frame quick sketches from films, seems like a good place to start

Why do American cartoons always have boring storyboards?

>> No.2050849

>>2050816
Probably because, like concept art, it's not meant to be pretty but only have enough information to get the point across. That being said, It may be possible that better looking preproduction works may lead to better looking productions

I'm not talking how the drawings look.
Actually, storyboards in American production are generally more well-drawn and polished than anime's storyboards.

The problem is that every shot looks boring. They are all simple profile or 3/4 shots.

Look at the visual variety in this.
Even something supposedly low-key and mundane is still far more imaginative than American cartoon's storyboard.

Anime and American cartoons just have a different way of story telling. Most cartoons opt for highly distinguishable silhouettes, even down to a hand gesture (pic related; you see these sort of notes in nearly every model sheet for American TV animation). It's pretty similar to a play; more stripped down and over exaggerated so everything can be read more easily? Anime is just a lot more "cinematic".

Not sure why there's a difference, though.

>The problem is that every shot looks boring
Why does every shot have to look amazing or interesting? I think this is one of the biggest problems with composition and cinematography nowadays. Everyone's trying to one up eachother with crazy angles, lighting and compositions but really none of that has any purpose other than looking "cool". If you ask me, it all looks really try hard. I'd take a simplistic but meaningful composition over one whose sole purpose is to make interesting a boring and thus shitty scene.

>> No.2050874

>>2050853
The amount of action obviously depends on the show and the scene you dumb fucking weeb. There are plenty of moeshit anime that barely have any movement at all during exposition scenes due to budget reasons. Those scenes are also storyboarded. You just won't find them online and if you did, you wouldn't post them because they are boring as fuck.

I think they emphasize on the visual consistency too much that it makes storyboard artists too scare to try something different.

I don't know man, effective composition is what I think modern cartoons lack.

Are you talking about the very subtle warm hue on the nose, which is the same as under his eyes and on his ears? It's a simple but very common and effective way to show warmth in the areas of the face that have the most blood flow. Similar to how he used a greenish, colder hue on the lower part of the face that has beard growth and more blue blood vessels. The artist respects real life observations and exaggerates it ever so slightly.

Meanwhile hipster amateurs like you completely disregard that faces do in fact have color hue and temperature shifts in real life, just for the sake of doing the exact opposite of what tumblr does.

Either you are mentally challenged or you have trouble seeing the true saturation of warm color.

Open that image in photoshop and use the colorpicker. Obviously the difference between the hues is visible you fucking moron, but it is not a jarring red as you are implying with your dumb fucking hipster comment earlier. It is a subtle, slightly more saturated hue that is slightly more shifted towards the reds.

Your comment reeks of desperation for approval. "those tumblr noses, amirite guys?? hahaha please let me fit in".

Uh, no, if you saw moderately saturated orange and warm yellows as bright red, then that would mean your eyes were inferior to those of people with regular eyesight because your eyes can't recognize low chroma colors. You do sound a bit stupid.

But I don't, you retard. It's pretty obvious from this reply that you can't see colors properly, otherwise you would know that a nose could be wrong even if it weren't straight up "bright red".

You might want to look at real people. You would discover that the depicted hue shift is even greater than the one people suffer from being actually drunk. So obviously it reads as a drunkard, or someone in a snowstorm.
Pic related, a nose of a mildly drunk asian person, who according to wikipedia are the more susceptible to this phenomenon. This is subtle, you probably wouldn't notice if you were just skimming through some other pictures
