Because the difference between the artist who improves and who don't is that, artists who improves knows fundamentals and they actually study art.
Artists who are shit and never improves are the ones that doesn't know what they are doing, and probably picked up the style from someone else, not knowing why the original artist drew the way he did.

To add to this improvement topic, people who don't study art tends to believe that they are good enough, because they don't know what they are wrong, since they are lacking knowledge.

However, people who study, they can see if something looks wrong, they know more, therefore they can SEE better. After they figure out what's wrong with their own drawings, they study harder and more about the subject. They improve, by fixing themselves.

Do you see why, people who are "decent" are the only ones who makes improvement?
Because people who aren't, they don't know what they are doing, nor want to study art, but have balls enough to post their "improvement progress" because they think they are doing great, since they can't see.

>Biggest reason newbies don't finish drawing is because they know it won't come out like they want it to. But the only way you'll gain the skill to make it come out like you desire is to practice finishing drawings.

That sounds like pretty good advice. As a beginner guilty of spending most of his drawing time on little sketches, I'm going to try to do more finished drawings.

Whether or not he's good wasn't the point. The problem with it being cherry-picked is that it portrays a jump in consistent quality that didn't actually happen. If you only show your worst drawings from a previous year and compare them to your absolute best from the present, then yeah, it's going to look like you improved a lot more than you really did. This is bad because it gives those who are learning unreasonable expectations.

i still finish my shit, but its always disappointing when i get done. i don't even strive for huge goals, just want to draw my shit my way. i know HOW i want it to look, but i know it won't end up that way and any improvement is pure fluke and wasn't from practice.

how do you even practice anyway? it just seems like ALL YOU DID was practice slowly as fuck, reading and drawing probably the same arm for fucking 10 hours. this shit is really hard to do when you have no time during the day to do it, you really don't improve much when you can only try to practice for maybe an hour or two at best. i get bored with practice too, i have no fucking idea how you can stand it. its impossible to make any semblance of fun.

been trying to do this shit for too long is probably burned me out with the little progress i've made, imagine spending what little time you have free to try to learn something you want to do as a hobby and not making any notable progress in years.

i could toss my shit up, but people are obviously going to say "practice more" LOOMIS, etc etc. that doesn't help at all, there has to be some sort of way to condense this shit and make it "don't bother studying EVERYTHING, just learn these more basic things first" and then you learn that the basic things are also 1 million steps long.

someone told me it only takes 20 hours to learn something, art is not one of those things.

Anon, sometimes momentum is the only way to get where you want to go. I've quite literally slingshotted myself into the new world of art for these last 3 months. It is all I do and think about. I don't have any interesting topics to talk about with friends other than art related ones. The reason I can improve so easily (besides being a total beginner getting muh newbie gains) is because I have a literally insane amount of momentum. I'm like a boulder barreling down a hillside: The momentum's doing all the push work for me. Practice is rewarding because I get better every day.

The tl;dr of this story is... If you wanna get gud as fuck, ya gotta commit. Throw yourself off a mountain into a whole new level of dedication for that sweet, sweet momentum.

I've used charcoal, but not extensively because I find it hard to erase and it fucks up my erasers, but you definitely can get smooth gradients and hella deep blacks, you just have to be careful not to fuck things up while using it. I don't understand why people use these buzzwords and think it makes perfect sense. "Afraid"? Am I literally afraid of making a mistake? No. "Confident"? Must the first stroke always be perfect and deliberate? There's nothing wrong with haphazard sketching, right?

Take this drawing of a perfectly heterosexual man I just started, for example. The entire sketch began haphazardly, and then I went back and began fixing the face.

Is this not acceptable? Does it have to be perfect from the get-go?

I'm not trying to be facetious, I'm just trying to understand the real meaning behind these buzzwords.

There's SOME improvement, but less than there could be.
Between 2013-11-15 and 2014-03-01 you discovered the concept of three-dimensional space for the first time, and made some noticeable progress in anatomy.
Between 2014-03-01 and 2015-04-13 you got somewhat better at shading, but it's less than what you achieved in the four months before.

Anatomy remains the biggest issue. Elizabeth's face was always a little exaggerated, but not THAT exaggerated.

Honestly, you would benefit greatly from a degree as offered by FZD or a nearer country's equivalent as perhaps you're taking a little too long - if you wanted a career in conceptual art. Yes, it is expensive, but it is usually a single year and most graduates are hired afterwards and you get launched directly into the career you want.

Your work would instantly improve 500% if you went back in with the lasso tool and a big airbrush and cleaned your color sketch up.

Separate objects onto different layers, lock the transparency, and paint in such a way that objects don't blend into each other until you want them to. Sort of like pic related. See how he's using the selection tools and layers and masks to separate elements? Try that, instead of trying to alla prima everything.

I forgot to mention, I studied a lot from movie screen caps, doing all sorts of studies. I Centered goals to make my studies more beneficial and tried to simplify things to either learning, composition, color, values, technique (others too that i forget to mention)

here's a good resource for HD screen caps:

http://movie-screencaps.com/category/by-quality/1080p-bluray/

Final note:
I seriously had to do a lot of questioning, and tried my best to understand things about art that other artists (established as well as artists i new that were better than me) had got right. Unfortunately, art is very academic, i put in 5-10 hours doing art. I read a lot, established artists such as Richard Schmidt and James Gurney have an entire ocean of knowledge in art and they explain it beautifully.

Recommend: Alla Prima 1 and 2, by Richard Scmidt and James Gurney: Color and Light.

Then you use real life as reference

THEN you go batshit insane and draw things from your drug fueled imagination.
