Nice cozy nook in the corner of my house in southern WV. Built my first PC in December so I'm glad to have finally moved on from my Macbook Pro. It's much more powerful than the Macbook, so I can finally work with complicated PS brushes at large resolutions.

My little Intuous 4 (medium) has been going strong since 2009. It's taken a mighty fucking beating over the years, but it still works great.

Specs:
i7 4790k
16GB RAM
MSI GTX 970 ...you know.... for work and stuff.
500GB SSD
z97X-UDH5 mobo

+ Photoshop CC mainly

Second work station I set up in March. Decided to blow a load of cash on a nice high end printer. Bought an Epson Stylus Photo R2000 and a nice paper trimmer and have really been loving it. I've been testing different papers to see what I like, and it's been great to print my own stuff at a high quality. Being able to look at your work physically instead of on a screen is a nice change of perspective, so I'd definitely recommend getting one if you got some spare cash!

very nice. what's the maximum size paper it can print? tried googling it and all it came up was "paper roll" and when i looked further i couldn't find an exact size

>> No.2048378

>>2048374
I've been printing with a 8.5x11 variety pack of different papers, so that's why they're all pretty tiny.

The printer itself can print up to 13"x19", which is big enough for my needs. I plan to print that size when I find a paper I really like.

The jump in price to a 17"x22" printer is just not worth it to me, since it's several hundred dollars more.

This thing is an ink hog though - even more so than I expected. Holy shit. Print quality is amazing though!

These threads always turn out ironic. It becomes pic after pic of anons showing of how well they invested in surrounding themselves with art gear but also revealing how really mediocre they are at making art.

Fancy table, lots of paints, lots brushes, lots pencils, but work that looks muddled, washed out, and flat.

Slick computer, slick tablet, slick headphones, but work that looks overly assisted, not fairly skillful, and done in a state of distraction--unfocused.

What's like to being so materialistic about making art?

Old photo, My battle station is a 6ft tripod and bag filled with whatever supplies I need for the night. Never know what I'm feeling, so I just pack an assortment of mediums I'll enjoy over the night. Last night was Working with watercolours and ink, most nights are oil painting, pastels or charcoal/chaulk for when I'm feeling muted, oil pastel for when my heads blowing out my skull and cloth/marker/solvent/stencils for textile work.

Works well and because most of my gear fits alongside mY daily carry, I'm never stuck in a situation where I don't have my canvas. Ended up oil painting with a friends on a second story roof yesterday, out by the railyards a week ago and on top of the local community center overlooking the railyard. Fuck desks!

Most of the shit fits in my backpack, the exception is my oil painting gear which has it's own red-blue-yellow covered bag. Standard loadout has my organizer, papers of varying weights, full range of pencils, charcoal/chaulk, blending tools, razor blades, watercolour set, basic brushes, inkstone/inkstick, viewfinder, ruler, miniset of oil pastel, Journal and my shit camera.

I'm 6'4, so how you can deal with those low angle surfaces is beyond me. Desks turn into a hunched nightmare for me, I need to stand and move around. Although standing desks aredank.

I always thought about using a slanted surface because it seemed to be an obvious improvement, but never got to it. Now I don't see much of a need anymore because drawing works fine without it.

And the upsides of using a regular desk are plenty.

Pretty lowcontent post, but meh, felt like saying it.

Yeah I have a 16 GB, and I don't use much of it, about 3 gb with all the references I have open

Then again I used to work on a 1 gb mac so I probably bought my conservation habits over to this one.

Photoshop eats up as much memory as you tell it to and half of the time it won't even reach the limit if you don't have open 15 different massive files, same goes for the art books

8gb is just fine, for digital 2D art 3D and game/movie making software however would require more. If you overuse 8gb on 2D art I'd say you're just not being organized .

How big do you work?

I have 16GB RAM too and I eat through it all in Photoshop alone. I actually with I had more. I personally work large though, on 7000px+ canvases, with many layers.

I tend to work small because of my old comp and then keep growing as I move along (you obviously can't do this if you're mainly into line art) Starting at 1500px for thumbs up to 7000+ once I get a grip on what I want. I don't have to do that anymore but i'm used to it.

I also tend to do what ctrlpaint calls "temp layers" I hate messes and the library of layers (though I do go overboard at times) so I separate the masses and merge down things Im satisfied with. You can also save multiple files as well with this technique just in case you mess up and can't undo, but I suppose you do that already.

some people also kill their ram with resolution, which you shouldn't do unless you're printing it, for all you "WHATS THE RESOLUTION ON THAT IMAGE" fans one of these files are 300 dpi and the other 3 dpi, no difference unless you print it.

Have you considered doing a CIS install on it?
Or ink refill syringes?

How much did it run you?
I am looking to get a printer soon as well.
a Canon Pro 100 or Pro 10 is looking great.
But those prices are almost Cintiq level.

Also wondered why we don't have a printer thread on here.

Since I'm pretty new to it, I don't see myself doing that anytime soon. I read up on some people trying to do CISS but they fucked up and ruined their printer. Ink refill syringes seem less risky, but I haven't tried those yet either.

I was also gonna go with a Canon PIXMA pro 100. I don't know why exactly, but I ended up thinking the Epson R2000 was better. I think it came down to dye based ink (Canon) vs pigment (Epson) printers. Pigment based ink seemed to fit my needs better, as it's supposed to be higher quality and work better with matte-finished fine art papers.

Good printers - turns out - are pretty expensive. The Epson R2000 was $700, but buying from the Epson store online you get an absolutely massive rebate of $250, or at least I did. Helped thwart the costs a bit. Good paper costs a bit too. Overall, a full paged 13x19" print costs maybe $3.00 to print for ink+paper.

An ink refill from the Epson store is about $20 per color. You can get a good amount of prints out of that, and only refill the colors that are low.

I ended up going with a 88lb. Polar White paper from Red River Papers. It's crazy thick and super sturdy, which is what I was looking for.

I also wish there was a good print thread here. I think a lot of printing discussion mostly between photographers, since digital illustrators don't think much about actually printing their work. It's really, really nice though. Being able to have a professional quality print whenever you want is great. Hopefully I can mitigate the costs of printing soon by selling some prints, but right now I'm still playing around with it.
