How do I into shading properly? Feels like I either come up with everything too light or everything too dark. Also I feel ashamed of how many hours I've already put into this, erasing and redoing things. I suspect autism.
Also, hair looks like Cthulhu's tentacles, fingers like she has sklerosis and face like she's been to a cheap Eastern-European plastic surgeon.

So how do I work out the overall values of shading faster? And can I post my reference picture which is a screen cap from said camwhore's show or does it count as porn?

You need to do that with tones sitting next to each other. A change in tone shows a change in planes. You can make a good sharp line between tones with just the tones themselves but it takes time, nigga.

I recently realised why sometimes my stuff looks bland and random when drawing. I end up zoning out and do something like drawing on autopilot.

Is this good? bad? I'm kind of expecting to draw on the level which I'm on even when I'm aware or half asleep when drawing, but I'm not sure what to do with that.

Do you often just take a break and chill till you can fully focus on what you're doing?

Also any resources for methos/techniques/tutorials for drawing the pelvis+ass+legs from different angles? Just figuring out how anatomically those parts look won't help much.

I don't know what I'm doing, I'm drawing shapes, bodies, figures.. but I'm seeing relationships in it, and context, and faces where there aren't faces, and motion...

Wouldn't it be better to just draw and draw and draw, shapes, figures, environments, anything really - until everything makes more and more sense? As opposed to doing exercises and stuff?

Bad anatomy, but I doubt you're going for realism anyways, which you should state beforehand so people don't jump down your throat about eye shape.

The bun looks like a balloon. The shirt collar has no thickness, like it's made out of paper and stands too far from the neck. Head shape is bad due to a non-existent chin and no dip where the eye socket goes. Mouth too far down (try placing it 1/3rd of the way from the bottom of the nose to the chin.), chicken scratching, boring breasts.

The shoulders are almost head-on, but the head is at a 3-quarter turn. Sure, it's possible to turn your neck, but I don't think that's what you intended.

It would look good to you because you're satisfied with your approximation.
Here, have an example. This woman insists that symbol drawing is a "buzzword", yet, look closer. See how the eyes are just what she thinks eyes look like? Have a look at that bun on her head. Is it not just a "symbol" of what a bun would look like? The biggest clue that you're looking at symbol drawing is also the flatness of the whole drawing. Look at this shit, there are no forms, anywhere! Symbol drawing is quite literally the drawing of symbols instead of what is actually there, what you actually see. No amount of careful measuring of proportions will save you if you're drawing like this.

Now, I'm pretty shit myself, so I hope this at least clears things up.
Now, in my drawing, I've tried to construct instead of draw symbols. I've made a ton of mistakes (which I'll find excuses for later) but you can see I'm trying to construct my figure out of volumes instead of symbols. I am cutting away and adding to three basic volumes: boxes, cylinders and spheres.
For instance, I've used a sphere for the cranium. I've used a cylinder for the neck, so I could wrap the sternocleidomastoid around it. I've used a box for the ribcage and pectoralis majoris. The eyes are also spheres, and the eyelids wrap around them.

Hope that explains what symbol drawing is and is not.

Even though I know nothing about rendering and painting I still rendered this. Was supposed to be a perspective practice.

I'm a bit confused though, I see all these anons practicing gesture and portraits but the guide I'm following says I need to have a grasp of perspective first.

Protip
If you grasp the basics first
perspective, planes, forms, 3D, space, and shit
basically drawing and understanding things constructions

rendering will be FUCK easier because you WILL be knowing where the shadows go
I know painting is the part that seems more fun, but when you don´t have the basics down is the most frustrating if you don´t get the results you want

learn to draw first
but this doesn´t mean you can´t make little painterly studies on the side

Nah, I was just demonstrating. Although you do need to draw muscles a lot of times until you just "feel" the outline.
With traditional media, you could use thin paper. Have your mannequin on one sheet, put a sheet over that, muscles, a sheet over that, finished figure; however, I don't believe that's necessary at all.
Anatomy scares off a lot of people but it really is just an aid in analyzing models/reference and double-checking yourself when drawing something.

Squinting to realize the overall shape combined with shadows? That sounds like a neat idea, I'll try that and see how it turns out. I'd like to try more picture subjects, like an actual face with that technique. So far, as far as shading goes, I've been going for what looks like the darkest area first, and adding in an initial layer of tone, smudging it, then adding more on top of it, smudging it again, and then rinse/repeat and concentrate it into the areas that are darker, that with some directional smudging of the graphite to give some cross effect of tone (idk terminology for that shit, i just play tuba and try to draw)

Thanks though!

Naked first. This way, you design the clothes to have weight, and put them on an actual body.
You can see examples of this everywhere; for instance, in superhero comics, the characters are practically naked and the clothes are simply painted on.
In most visual novels, characters also have naked sprites because they were originally so.
If you look at drafts of comics, storyboards and animation, the clothes are also drawn later.

if i end up with a drawing like yours i trace the reference a few times and then try to freehand it and it usually comes out looking much better than trying to freehand it the first time. alternatively you could take the generic /ic/ route and try doing it upside-down

>>2048561
instead of trying to draw their figure try to draw the negative space around them and then adjust accordingly. you're trying too hard to make things accurate in one specific area of the drawing and it looks fine if you only focus on one part (except for the face) but the proportions are wrong. try drawing from a reference that is easier to proportion (like someone standing upright) and then move to references like the one you used. you're a promising artist though. keep drawing.

Need help.
Every time I try to color something, the sketch is good, the inking is pathetic, and the coloring is possibly even worse.
The inking practice is a matter of practice, but regarding the coloring, I have no idea if I'm doing the right thing.
I use a couple increasingly lighter colors, following the direction the light is coming from, then I blend the colors with the standard blending brush.
It's a shame, because the sketch turns out fine

I don't think you're at the coloring stage quite yet. Skip the following paragraph if you only want to see that part of my advice:

Get an account on CGPeers.
I recommend working on your draftsmanship first. Pencil, paper, and Scott Robertson. Then, get into construction with Hampton or Loomis. I find Hampton much better. Then, you should get into rendering basic forms. There are a lot of books on this subject, but I personally recommend James Gurney's Color and Light.

After that, or right now if you've ignored that paragraph, look up CtrlPaint. It's the best resource for digital drawing/painting that I know of. You can also find the premium videos on CGPeers. These should help with your coloring and inking issues.

>>2050686
No. You should only do that after you've got a handle on construction. Then you would use tracing to feel out the actual forms.

Unless her hair's supposed to be glowing, it seems bizarre that the area behind her ear and neck wouldn't be darker or in shadow. The back of her skull is not large enough to actually contain a brain. This is probably the result of her forehead not being shaped correctly. The results are worse than the one learned by reading 'Drawing with the right side of the brain', while I'm now able to draw a face that actually looks like a face without ref.
