So something like this with the nipple? Also the right arm was hidden behind the boob, didn't draw any lines for it. Not sure what to reference for arm thickness, I just get a feel for them. Is that any important in "anime" drawings?

But now that you mention it and I compare it to the headsize maybe I'm off...

The biggest problem with the foreshortning, is that despite her hand coming straight towards the viewer, it is still the same size as her face, you would expect it to be a lot bigger when pointed towards us.
Try to scale it up, and not just a little, purposefully make it too big first, and then scale it down a bit at a time until you get a size you like.

Thanks for this.
I tried scanning a bunch of my other off the page VP perspective drawings, and making a perspective grid on top them in carapace, turned out almost of all of them had the same problem, the right vanishing point would end up too high, making the horizontal line diagonal.

So in this drawing I tried to force myself to lower the right VP as shown by the purple ground plane, as opposed to the original yellow I drew first, and it helped.

Those hands are tiny

Also there shouldn't be a gap between her thighs seen from that angle unless her vagina is just a triangular flap.

Those lumpy shoulder muscles... the formless breasts... the way the neck attaches...

The anatomy is just peppered with so many little flaws, I could write paragraphs nitpicking it apart.

You'd be so much better off working with reference. I would suggest starting from scratch. Dig around, find some reference you like, work from that. It doesn't matter if you're going for something "stylized," you will still benefit immensely by studying an actual body.

You're scribbling your lines way too much, concentrate on making your strokes thoughtful and effective or it just comes across as a cluttered mess. It confuses the eye, clutters the form, and detracts from the quality of your sketch. I'm sure you didn't need to make 12 separate strokes to define the chin. Also watch out how you're lifting your pen and the shape you're forming with your stroke. It's really noticeable in the bangs, you can see curls in the line at the top of the strokes of the bangs. The form doesn't curve in there like that so why should your strokes?

Also I have no idea why you make those guidelines without the intention of following them.

Forgive me, anon. I'm not too familiar with stylized art yet. Still, I wanted to help a bit. I think you're rushing into details to quickly and not giving line quality enough consideration. Usually people call it chicken scratch. Like >>2035469 said, you don't need 15 lines to define a feature.

Also, your proportions are pretty off. The top of the ear tends not to go past the brow-line and it's too big in comparison with the rest of the face.

The face can be divided into thirds to get a good idea of where the features should be placed. If any of these divisions are too long or too short the face looks a bit off. I'm surprised no one has said this yet but you could benefit a lot through reading Loomis' books. Take what I say with a grain of salt, though. I'm no expert.

I know a guy who does things kinda like you.

I tried to go for a sort of simple or cartoon style a while back. Whenever I felt like there weren't enough lines I'd just pull up some good reference.

IMO for this in particular I'd put some more folds around the waist, large breasted girls with thin waists in tight dresses will always have these weird rippling cloth rims along their abs/under their breasts because of the size difference.

You're not doing anything seriously wrong, but if you want to expand just...do more stuff. Put more stuff in, more characters, put a good background. Keep referencing small unimportant stuff like lighters and lamps and necklaces. A somewhat flat color style would really make this pop.

The thing people (should) do is reference poses, not copy them. When starting a figure you should put down whats in your mind first, and THEN find a reference to better understand things like how a limb is foreshortened, or where the center of gravity is. Its okay for you to start with drawing the head, but you shouldn't do it from anime. Anime is a highly stylized language of symbols that arise from people understanding a complex subject and presenting it in a noncomplex way. Trying to learn how to draw a head from cartoons/anime is like trying to learn chemistry by reading the glossary. You should 1) learn the major planes 2) learn the proportions 3) look over the anatomy (imo not AS important in the head as the rest of the body) and 4) google heads and ask yourself questions; how do the folds of the eyes overlap each other? What happens to the rest of the face when someone smiles or frowns? How does the far facing corner of the mouth look like at different angles? etc etc. And most of all above all this, gain an early fundamental understanding of perspective. Perspective is in absolutely everything we draw and I personally wish I knew that earlier.
You start smart, concise, structured and with life and with the teaching of professionals. Work for that rigid base foundation of understanding and you'll rise above your peers.

I feel like you lost something between your steps.

The nose and chin became flat for instance, the lips constantly change shape between steps and I'll be honest, they looked their best in your sketch. You added a shitton of shadow on the right size of the nose, adding to that sunken feeling, you didn't have that shadow in the middle step and I don't think you needed it. I think you've also over-blended the whole thing. Try blending with a hard-edged brush as opposed to a soft-edged brush. That way you wont get that uniform fuzziness like you ran the thing through a blur filter.

SAI is great for linework and I know artists like Erebun use it for ultra clean artwork. I rarely line over sketches in PS unless I'm a masochist. (and I use Lazy Nezumi for stability).

It just takes ages to make clean lineart, though. I had a saved tutorial somewhere but the artist has put it into storage ;_;, but essentially you just use a super thin brush and trace over the lines, kind of in like a wrist or arm flick so you cover the curve in one single movement. (and you go off aim like 95% of the time hence the ctrl+zing). You can also zoom in and knock off a few pixels when two lines collide to blend them into each other and make it look as if it was a single line to begin with.

It's much easier in SAI anyway.

Photoshop - for painterly look
SAI for manga/anime look.

Ok I will definitely get SAI then. I've been doing the lines like you say too where you just quickly flick & try and aim it, then delete it if it's not correct (hope I'm not misinterpreting that). Honestly it's just cleaning up the lines that makes it look weird, since it's hard to replicate the same curves using this flick & aim, so I will get it close & create a "patch line" where it connects the two. It's pretty noticeable in the gloves where it gets bumpy (referencing >>2037060). Hopefully as you say SAI will help with that issue

Wanted to just throw something out there for beginners having trouble with proportion, and trying to measuring by eye using shapes (eyes, lines, etc.) or by holding their pencil out isn't helping. I know I've seen this advice before, but I dunno if somebody else hasn't come across it yet.

Since you're working on a 2-d surface, you only really need to worry about an x and y axis when you're trying to draw something from reference or life. If you draw out your first line in the drawing, and you see another line or point you want to move to next, try to find an endpoint for your line and look for where the horizontal and vertical axis are relative to a point on the other line, and then try to eyeball an angle running from the point you want to draw to the point that is already on the paper. If you can get both of these steps correct, you'll be in approximately the right place. You'll still need to draw the lines, but you'll have landmarks on the paper where you put these points.

This should help you be able to just visually rough out a proportional framework. It probably won't be as exact as a grid, but a grid is kind of the most rigorous and time consuming method of drawing a thing proportionally.

Not good. But you're in the right place. You got all the major body parts on paper, but that's about it.

Do some figure studies from the refs thread. At this point you need quantity over quality. The next time you post, you should have at least 10 figures instead of just 1

>But are they in the right place?
>Are the arms the right size?
It's not just the placement and size, the lines that you chose to draw imply certain body parts are occluding others, which makes your drawing confusing. For example, her left inner elbow line makes her arm look twisted. The base of her neck is intersecting the collar bones. The armpit lines don't make sense.

Hammer out a few figures instead of tweaking one over and over. Think about the rib cage like an egg and attach it to the pelvis etc etc do some studies from the sticky if you need to.

How do you measure proportions for organic things?

Say, I want to draw a House or Car in front of me, how would I get the measurements for that? I know betty edwards does the pencil trick (like everyone else), and places that exact measurement on paper.

But my problem is, what if I want to make it bigger?

>> No.2038107

>>2038095

Eyeball angles. If you have an image and place dots on it, the other dots can be found by referencing an angle from at least two other dots that will intersect there. So, if I draw two lines from two different locations that intersect somewhere, their angle determines the proportion. If I make the distance between the two reference dots smaller, and then draw the same angled lines towards an intersection, that intersection will be a proportionately equal distance to the references as the time I did it and the references were further apart.

Basically, if you don't want to measure it out with a pencil your options are to either draw a grid, do it intuitively, or find a reference point. maybe the references would be the end of the ear and the bottom of the chin, and the point you want to find is the left most edge of one of the eyes, and then you try to work out the angle from the chin to the eye, and the ear to the eye, draw those lines and look for where they intersect. That is where the edge of the eye is. Th

This depends on your ability to accurately see angles, but if you can then you can scale up or scale down an image as much as you want. The further away your points are tho, the larger the room for error.

So, who or what can tell me how forms intersect?
I was under the impression that one object would yield to the perspective of the other object that it was intersecting.
But some looked really wrong. A few of them I did correctly, but a few I just could not figure out.
I tried to re-create to shapes in blender to figure it out and the rule of thumb that I was using was as useful as a thumb up my asshole.
Can anyone help me out with this?

Simple mechanical pencil for these. The variance you might be picking up is that after I digitize the page I use the photoshop airbrush for exentuating shadows and highlights
