El Greco had a pretty firm understanding of perspective (keep in mind he's roughly contemporary with Vasari). Claiming he "fucked up" his perspective is like claiming he "fucked up the anatomy on his notoriously elongated figures. It was intentional distortion for an effect.

Art-newbies, having just learned the "rules" of art, never fail to criticize any sort of abstraction or distortion as a mistake. We're very proud that you can spot when perspective is broken, now you can work on understanding why the rules of art are broken.

Some paintings from the old masters and beyond can be called perverted or to have an air of eroticism, but they were much more than that. Most of Bouguereau's paintings are quite pure (even most of the nudes) and non-shocking. Bouguereau understood classical philosophy and immersed himself in it. The followers of old masters today who are popular are of another level wherein their very image is often inseparable from their perversion.

This one, I have a print of it on my wall in my room. Just the look of absolute savagery on saturn's face is just so chilling, the way he grips the corpse so tightly that his fingers are going through the man/female like it was nothing at all, the grotesque position, the lighting that suggests that he is in a cave or maybe a void of some sort, the story behind the painting, hell some people speculate that the painting has been worn down to the point where the original strokes were lost to time, and that originally he had semi-erect penis as he consumed his sons flesh from fear of one of them overpowering him. It's just so horrific.. it's beautiful.

>> No.2033289

>>2033274
Of course /ic/ fears any degree of abstraction, most anons here don't even understand what it means to have a visual concept in thier work. So they rely heavily on the literal.

It's not a problem of having limited tastes, because that would imply an ability to read art. It's a problem of not knowing how to look at a painting altogether. Add to that the fact that most anons are either too lazy or are not interested in reading up on how to appreciate a work of art.

They sit around waiting for good art to be given to them. What else would expect from a group like that?

all art is enriched by historical context, from renaissance works full of religious imagery and portraits of patrons stuck in the corner to basquiat and pollock.

it's especially useful for modern and contemporary art because a lot of people, who lack an education in art, make the mistaken assumption that all art has a single goal: to be pretty like a flower, and faithfully represent reality.

if you take an art history 101 course, you learn this isn't so, and you don't bring your own preconceived judgments and expectations to a work that isn't even attempting to achieve the goals you've set for it.

You represent modern way of thinking in which learning is done to put others down, and assume that anyone who doesn't share your sentiment isn't well read, or that reading about them will inevitably lead one to the like conclusion as you. We're surrounded by modern and postmodern art. It's quite difficult for one to be uneducated about them. Thing is, why should someone who sees something as worthless endeavor to research more into worthlessness? There are greater things out there to study, and the study of which will improve judgment in all areas of art and life.

>it's especially useful for modern and contemporary art because a lot of people, who lack an education in art, make the mistaken assumption that all art has a single goal: to be pretty like a flower, and faithfully represent reality.
No, that's mostly modernists and postmodernists projecting their thoughts about pre-modern art to the people who don't work in modernist ways. I've heard more contemporary artists claim that painting with objects and coherent composition in space is more about reproducing reality than the other.

I think you misunderstand me. How does it contradict? I'm saying that someone who's spend his life not working like Pollock won't be able to right away reproduce the same effect if he tried. That doesn't mean that action painting is especially difficult to do as they claim. It's just difficult to that particular painter because he hasn't practiced in that way. But supporters of Pollock make it SEEM like it is because if some great painter can't reproduce Pollock (in the same large scale I should correct myself) then Pollock must be a genius.

Now let's see the opposite where someone who works more like Pollock tries to paint like a competent painter.

Some people draw dicks to draw dicks. Some people draw dicks to make people think about dicks. Some people see the dicks and are moved, some are enraged, others aroused. Some may accept the dicks for the dicks they are, others will contemplate the meaning BEHIND the dicks.

/v/ and the other boards-tans tend to be more flattering. I think the only other board with a self-depreciating-tan is /b/.

We used to be pretentious.. Most everyone that was good left. Now /ic/ has too many nsfw, digital art, and beginner threads. I used to come here to learn every day. But now its dead, because people from /b/ came over saying. "hey i can doodle!" and all the good guys left. including me. Fuck 4chan, I don't want to post my art for murders pedophiles and rapists to view... RIP /ic/

yeah I remember those, were good times where ic was a lot more chill. and by a lot more I do mean a fucking lot. It was so much more proactive than today, in the sense that a lot of people helped each other. redlines were common. today it's rare to see one. Threads were actually usefull.

there's drawthreads on every other boards, and the more frequent they become the more some people will like it and end up here. same with the sakimi wave. it was still acceptable around 2 years ago. today the level on ic is just too low.

>>2034855
it's true though, and by leaving I think it's safe to say some are still lurking. if you posted before you would most likely get constructive and honest feedback, not a toxic one. I rarely post some doodles myself, but I'll never post a finished stuff in here just because most artists wouldn't like to be associated with /ic/, me included.

This is one of my favorite paintings. The face of the Saturn has so much to say. His face is a mixture of savage hunger with a hint of self hatred. It's as if he's compeled to consume the torso due to his monstrous temperament yet the remaining shread of humanity is apparent on his face in a look of shock and dread. He's forced to feed yet he loathes the necessity of it.

Literally the only reason he was successful was because of his relation to Sigmund. That's the only reason people put a "psychological" label on his paintings.

>> No.2040439

Dude that is so wrong. His paintings are incredible and unique, and it's not like his name magically made him successful...he really only achieved success fairly late in life anyways.

I suggest taking a look into his oeuvre and life a bit more deeply before making statements like you are. His work is really remarkable and it is cheap to try to pass off his place in history as being the result of his name.

>> No.2040517

>>2040421
that's the most unsupported jelly bullshit I've ever read. his work has links with german expressionism, which also emphasizes psychological aspects. It's his handling of the figure and not his pedigree that leads to the "psychological" characterization of his work. And like the other anon said, he didn't get mad famous until after he achieved mad skill, a little research goes a long way in understanding an artist's trajectory.

That's definitely some art historian's pet theory, not verifiable historical fact. Why would Michelangelo only make the head and hands bigger? In perspective, you'd still need to make the arms/neck/chest bigger, too, to keep the proportional relationships right, or the head and hands would still look too big. And why would Michelangelo want to "correct" for perspective, anyway?

I don't buy that theory, personally. It sounds good at first, but the more you think about it, the less sense it makes.

okay, that's beautiful, but it still doesn't explain why his art is on the pedestal it's been placed on. Why is this a master work? I saw this at the high and felt nothing, but a few months later saw diego rivera's huge communist mural they had, and I stared at that for well over half an hour. There was a lot that was being presented to the viewer, and it was very enjoyable to "read" what he was saying. I'm not saying Rivera is the best artist, but that mural was engaging for me. If Pollock's is simply paint on a canvas, why bother? I've dropped a paint can before, so that isn't a new "aesthetic experience"

I've seen Rivera's murals in Detroit, and also saw 1A at the High. I thoroughly enjoyed both. I felt that Pollock also had a lot being presented to the viewer, and I enjoyed engaging the work. What he presents just isn't narrative or representational, it is paint on canvas but still has an emotional quality and a physicality that are interesting in themselves.

Different strokes for different folks.

Well said.
The first time you hear that theory it makes sense because you have no context.
The only thing I believe may be true is that he didn't care too much about the anatomy/details of the head since it was going to be viewed from far away.

I guess I'm just too literal to fully appreciate nonrepresentational stuff. I look at it for a minute and I feel like I've gotten all that there is for me to get from it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ oh well

I think it's more that the head and hands are supposed to be the focal points, and he had to put extra emphasis on them because of it's distance from the viewer
