"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2021556

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

If you're in PS I'd reccommend going into color balance first if your colors are what concern you. If you wanted to unify the colors towards a certain one, I'd use a different filter, multiply only deals with the shadows of your image primarily.

>> No.2032403 [DELETED]

>>2032394
No, do you even know why it's called multiply? Because it MULTIPLIES the colors of the two layers (represented on a scale of 0 to 1 per channel). So brighter colors are more affected by it (0.5 * 1 = 0.5, delta 0.5) whereas darker colors are less affected by it (0.5 * 0.1 = 0.05, delta 0.05).

because you posted it as an attempt to prove that you have solid technical skills, but the second picture is equally unimpressive. Being a beginner, you couldnt differentiate between the quality of the two very well. The girl in the picture also looks like a typical Tumblerina, which is the face i associate everyone on this goddamn board with. Girl in photo also looks like someone who would take the time to do a detailed portrait of themselves, I'd guess that you maybe also have a half-finished portrait of your friend laying around, or maybe a drawing of a single eye with something about it being a "study". The coy "over the shoulder" shitty shortcut with the oh-so-artistic paint drops. Probably have a snapchat or tumblr or whatever with a sketchbook drawing with a pencil or pen draped over it and a softening filter.

Found some colored pencils in my art box, tried some new stuff trying to emulate Jake Parker. He sketches in colored pencil first, inks with pocket brush pen, then does light coloring with markers.

The guy is some kind of genius. The process felt really smooth. Graphite and copics don't play well together, but CP + copics seem to do fine. Also, the underlying sketch can barely be seen under the inks. I think I'll play with this technique for a little bit - digital can go fuck itself

I need advice on my current drawing. I just finished the sketch for my Shirobako tribute drawing, and I need some more eyes to look at it and maybe point out any horribly obvious problems that I missed.

Also I can't figure out the perspective on the feet... I may just have them cropped off in the digital rendering, though it would be nice to figure it out.

You aren't using construction correctly. The facial features are all over the place. The neck isn't attached to the torso correctly (you can see the glaring shift of the neck yourself) and it's too wide. The torso is wrong the clavicle is spaced out too far away from the pit of the neck to the sternum. And so if you know the torso is wrong you definitely got the proportion of the arms wrong and hand is too short. The legs are broken as well.

Basically use volumes to build the figure next time, that would be a start.

I started off with a gesture from a pose reference then deformed it a bit.
Every time I've tried mechanical constructions of characters, they've always ended up looking stiff..

I wanted to make the pose dynamic, which might constitute a fair amount of leg-breaking, but I guess there's a balance between stylized and wrong, that I need to reach?

I was also trying to go with more of a minimal line for the clavical, but I can try bringing them closer.

I was trying to go for a slightly top-down perspective as well, which might be why the torso looks so off? Any tips?

Alright, so i brought one of the legs in, made the hands larger, straightened out the neck, and edited the lines on one of the eyes.

I would rather try to identify exactly what went wrong, and try to fix it.

Do you think constructing the drawing with various shapes (circles, cylinders, etc) would be better than using a pose reference?

From what I've seen, constructing figures like that always causes them to look stiff, and generated, rather than flowing and dynamic.

Sometimes for top down perspectives you can draw a box in perspective, then draw the character in the box.

It's obvious, but I'll say it anyways, gestures will help loosen up your figures

I'm not that anon, but for pose construction I found that you can't really turd polish it like the way you can over render.

With more practice your poses will become more natural and you will construct them unconsciously.

One thing you might want to try is just redrawing the figure 4-5 times instead of erasing it. Then you can cross compare all the figures and pick the one that feels the most fluid. It's kind of like stochastic drawing. Otherwise, It will be hard to learn proper figure construction from just one figure.

I'm starting to wonder if this is even a stylization thread. People are nitpicking anatomy that is supposed to be deformed or exaggerated.

Anime characters are cartoons, so they don't need to be 100% anatomically correct, they just need to be some-what accurate with feature placement.

Also what kind of advice is this?

but the main part is, anatomy isn't 100% correct but that mistakes he made were not stylistic choices. Having a "style" isn't an excuse to have wrong anatomy. Certain things are exagerated and that's fine but it doesn't change tongue placement, it doesn't make 1 side of your jaw longer, it doesn't make your neck grow out 3 inches to the side.
go back to your deviant art shit, style allows exaggeration but doesn't mean you can say fuck anatomy.

For values do some studies in gray scale, and use the full range of grays from black to white.

For colors, as most anon's say, don't shade with black, instead change the hue for shadow and highlights. Typically shadows are cooler, and highlights are warmer, but it really depends on the light sources.

Keep practicing, you'll get there.

The foreshortening of the arm on the left is borked. One way to improve on it is to make the opening of the sleeve at an angle facing the viewer, an open circle, as opposed to a narrow oval.

I also don't understand why the cloth is twisting up into her armpit, like it was pinned there or something. The folds around there usually radiate from the pit, not fold over it.

How did you test before you buy?

Looks pretty good, I like the colors, and the skin tones. Markers are a lot of fun. If you enjoyed your trial, then you should definitely get some.

Things to note
>your printer toner looks kind of low, go back with a pen to boost some of your linework in the darker areas. I do like some of the transparency on the print
>to keep the sweater from getting blotchy try to keep the whole region wet, and the color will blend into itself. Your speed makes a big difference for how much ink makes it onto the paper.
>alternatively, if you layer the same color over a region after it dries for a bit, you can make it darker. So you can give the sweater a little more form.

Enjoy your markers!

You got me bro, I really wish I could make slow progress and only draw uncanny weird semi-anime portraits from reference.

FiRez is a faggot through and through, and anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't been on this board long enough to witness his faggotry.
But hey, that's to be expected from tripfaggots right, but FiRez is a special kind of cunt. I legitimately hope he dies of throat cancer or something.

It's the general self absorbed tripfaggotry that can be found across all boards, but I really started to hate when he made a draw thread with his trip on.
Somebody called him out and asked why he tripped.
He responded with a classic tripfag response along the lines of;
>because I can lollolollelele

Fair enough enough right, everybody has the right to be a faggot, but then some guy called him out on the fact that some people might not see this thread because they have him filtered, and he responded with pretty much
>lolololo not my problem bro

It was even worse than that, but that's the general gist of it.
That self absorbed narcissism is something I can't stand, just the way he replied.
Jesus fucking Christ, how can one grown man be this much of a faggot, did your dad beat you and lock you the closet or something holy fuck. This type of stuff can be found in most tripfaggots, but FiRez tripfaggorty just tickles me in the wrong way for some reason. It's like Tripfaggotry Supreme™.

Firez is not an attention whore, it is clear that success sparks jealousy among others as Firez not only learns to draw at an incredible rate he is also a musician, is learning different languages, has a growing fanbase and on top of it all he does this despite the hardships he endures due to his current location.

If you can not see that faggots such as >>2036085

are either incredibly butt devastated or maybe they have a peculiar attraction to someone who they know nothing of do this as a form to get the attention of said person you need to understand that.

Something that I sometimes do is multiple attempts at line-art/coloring on the same piece. Basically what you'd do is ink a portion or most of the drawing you posted, but instead of accepting that line art as final, create a new layer and start over. Critically examine the first attempt, then take what you've learned and apply it to the new version. Maybe do a few layers of this sort of thing, using a different process for the line-art in each piece.

This can be a relatively fast way of finding what works or not.

Yeah, remove the points on the eyes. Honestly the best advice I can give (which I'm sure you've heard before) is go back to basics.

For you I'd recommend to start with circles, and try to make as many perfect circles as you can. The only reason I say this is because I can see the oval in the background that you used for the head shape. Once you get that stuff figured out, tackling anatomy will be your next step. By anatomy, I dont mean learning to draw the human figure like da vinci, but learn how human proportion works and how other anime artists give it a little twist.

The crown kind of looks strange like it's asymmetrical and might be off as far as how it's placed on the head in perspective. The ellipse making up the base of the crown looks wonky to me.

That's the opposite of what he should do though. He needs to learn to finish a piece and spend hours on it only to come back later and realize how shit it is and what he could have done better.

wrong. he just keeps pushing it, but that alone isn't enough to make a good picture.
he needs to work more on his fundamentals instead of CONSTANTLY polishing turds like this. this isn't giving back much in terms of experience either. he needs to draw more.

I don't think calling it turd polishing is quite fair. I do agree with what you're saying though, a lot of changes to the piece didn't do much to solve its core issues.

Well then the fucker needs to work on his fundamentals, too. But he still shouldn't just drop everything altogether. Seriously, you get into a habit of never finishing anything by doing that and it's just as bad as forever turd polishing.

There's a balance. He needs to stop being a faggot and do some damn studies along with what he already does.

Pirez's work is shit, and will always be shit. He paints the same thing every time. And they are all BORING. The characters are lifeless and have the same dull flat expression. There is never a visual concept. The compositions are dead in the water. The colors are muddy and the textures all look like dirt.

He thinks he's working like portrait artist. As if he's bringing classical art values to animu. Well, he's not. All he's doing is repeating formula, and he's not even doing that correctly.

You can tell he posts out of spite and does it just to annoy others who have grown tired of his games. He samefags worse than Kyle and thinks his shit don't stink. Something has to be done about this troll.

Stfu Kelly. I should have never turned you on to copying 19th century sculpture. Everyone and their mother can see how full of yourself you've become copying shit from pintrest, flickr, and sotheby. You should have just stuck to copying from hentaifoundry or furrinfinty. You're not hot shit and you don't have some esoteric advantage on anatomy. You're just a fat kid that holds grudges when people critique your shit. Get over it already.

Values don't look bad honestly. Maybe some tweaks to it could help, but it still reads clearly because of how clean it is and the linework and stuff.

I think there could be a twist the torso though. Right now the pose is kinda dumpy/stiff.

That's exactly what he does. Firez takes eons to notice obvious mistakes, then slowly chips away at them until his pieces finally look passable. The girl's features don't even wrap around her skull.

>> No.2038277

>>2038269
I would make the lineweight of forms that overlap other forms heavier than the form/details underneath to help them pop from one another. For instance the hand/arm of the girl on the left has lines that are about the same weight as the sash they're on top of. Of course color will help visually differentiate them, but if you want them to pop as linework, I would thicken up that arm's lines. A few other points similar to that would be her temple-hair, the back of her bra, collar etc.
