How do I get such strong / bold colors like this? Is it all ink? Is it applied with a brush or is it a fat marker? I want to get into ink painting/drawings but I dont know where to even begin.

It's not color, it's a play of lineweights, all black and white.

I'm going to guess a marker with a brush tip just because of the lack of feathering, though it isn't impossible to achieve this with a brush.

If I were you I would start with markers/pens. They're easier to pick up/control than brushes and are less likely to discourage you.

Get archival quality pens of a variety of tip sizes and (if you want) shapes. You'll want one with pigment based and waterproof ink.

I like Faber-Castell Pitt Artist's Pens myself. Sakura Micron are popular too.

When drawing in this style it's important to pay attention to your placement of dark areas, these will dictate how the eye will travel over the piece.

Two artists you might want to check out are Mike Mignola and Eduardo Risso, both talented artists and are best known for their masterful manipulation of black spaces in their illustrations.

Also:

I would recommend getting a sketchbook with a paperweight of 70-80 lb. Any lighter and it might bleed. The heavier weights tend to be toothier and you don't really want that for working with ink. Make sure you get something with a fairly smooth surface.

Start with studies, especially of simple/familiar objects to help you get a feel for your materials and the style you're trying to achieve.

Also as time goes on sometimes you'll find your marker's tips splitting or fraying. You shouldn't use it for the major features of your work (unless the fraying/splitting achieves a look that you want), however if it's not too fine a marker, I usually like to keep it as a "work horse" pen and use it to fill in large areas so as to not waste its ink.

I learned this the hard way but if you buy black inking pens, pick one brand and stick to it. The 'black' of one brand may not be the same as the 'black' of another.

I've been having problems with this same style--mainly that I've found it hard to get thick, even pools of black. Instead, I can see uneven lines left behind by the marker, as in my image.

Could be the kind of marker you're using, perhaps the brand you have just doesn't produce particularly opaque ink. Maybe the solution is to go over the area once or twice?

What marker are you using?

A lot of what make a good marker is the alcohol content. The higher the alcohol content the more blendable it is. I personally use Copic Ciaos, they have medium soft brush tips which are awesome for blending and shading. You could also do Lettraset markers, pricey but they're very good.

If you want you can also try brushing in India ink. Eliminates the problem of streaking all together. However the trick is matching the ink if you do your details with marker, since not all blacks look alike.

Oh, some art marker I got in the craft store next to the staedtler pens--I don't have it any more.

>>2029379
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have to do some more experimenting.

the low resolution wont let me see how it is but here are my assumptions, any shaded area is a brush, the wavy lines at the border, likely a brush, though there are some nibs that can do that, but just judging by the rest, its a brush.

>> No.2030098

>>2030097
on the face, im going to assume nib here just because i don't believe the person has a light enough touch to do this with a brush

ok, im done... fuck this spam filter shit, you know where people paste txt documents, put this in there 3L9ZeBwY and you will find what was considered spam... if anyone figures out what was triggering the filter, tell me, im watching thread now.

There's certain keywords and url formats that trigger the spam filter. If your post isn't terribly big/complicated, you can try going in and changing some of the more likely words/links by putting a space in them and seeing which one lets your post through. Do it one or two at a time per try so as to not make your post annoying to read and you can skip obviously benign words like "the" or "post"
