You know what, I was about to come in here and comment about how we just got rid of a Saki thread could we PLEASE not do this but actually, I would be fully in favor of this. OP didn't say the end product had to be as good or better than hers, only similar. The main goal of this thread, seems to me, wasn't to be a dick measuring contest with Saki though of course people are gonna look at it that way from a glance, but it looks to me like it's really about testing our own limits and possibly learning something along the way. Sakimi's style is leaning more towards realism, so it is a good idea to refer some real life reference. Your anatomy is really out of place now in terms of proportions, and construction. I'm afraid to offend disabled people, but normal people have this muscle called 'trapezius muscles' that connects the back of the neck, together with the torso. Sakimi's figure's trapezius are obscured by her hair, so make sure that you get that down.

No, it doesn't but it's some a style choice and some fudging with the hair. Being good isn't just about not making mistakes but able to make it work. It's not atrocious in my mind, unlike the hand which seemed corrected by cropping rather rolling with it.

I think we should take her success as proof that you don't need to be perfect. It is okay to just be decent and appreciated for what you are able to produce, and requires a hell of a lot less effort and heartache. Just because some have high standards for themselves doesn't mean they should apply those same standards to all around. Especially when that person is making half a million more than you.

I just 100% legally downloaded her tutorial video called portrait 101 and wow her basic understanding of facial proportions is almost garbage. I'm glad she renders the fuck out of her stuff so well cuz she's just a step above amateur level with her actual drawing skills.

Here is my attempt. I didn't just copied one of her pieces because that doesn't means much. I also tried her hairbrush technique even though I prefer hard round brush and bw underpainting.
These were my rules
-Under 1.5 hours (the time she takes to make most of her portraits)
-No thumbs (I always thumbnail)
-No reference (I'm like a cripple without ref)
-No underdrawing

It is obviously very amateurish and not as good. The proportions are off and the composition too stiff. I even ran out of time for the background. I think I'm still 3-4 hours away from calling it done. Also she doesn't has pupils because that's her how her character looks (Shirayuki Mizore)

But I'll sleep well knowing that I'll NEVER EVER be a shitposter who can only criticize instead of actually trying to paint.


I think that with enough time and dedication one could achieve her level in like a year, but what blows my mind the most is her speed. She is fast as shit.

Uh, Sakimichan's drawings are what carries her work. She can draw appealing faces and semi-decent anatomy. If her faces looked derpy as fuck like those you see posted on /ic/ all the time, she wouldn't be nearly as successful. You don't have to be a master of anatomy, but you still have to be good at drawing and Sakimichan is better at it than the bitter noobs want to give her credit for.

Her work is popular because she has a very clean rendering style, appealing drawing, good stylization that doesn't cross over to uncanny valley territory. Take one of those away, and it wouldn't be nearly as good

I'm not saying I could replicate the face she did exactly anyway, but I have my own vision of how I think Cloud should look so I'm trying to go for that.
