"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2009795

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Blatant doubleposting from the drawthread:

Any tips on keeping a stylized two/three tone shading while still "finishing" work? I seem to be permanently stuck in the coloring book lineart stage.

If I add more hard black lines it gets really ugly and artificially noisy. It also loses most of the softness.

If I add more pencil shades everywhere then it looks like I'm going for a smooth shaded look, which isn't really what I want.

what I had done was use a medium pen, like a 0.8 for most of my lines, and then a really tiny thin lines with a 0.05 for shadows. then it was just mechanical pencil for the erst of the shading. shading over the thin lines gave me my second darkest value, and just straight up black for the very darkest (though i kinda just guessed with that)
i dont know if that helps but thats how i approach it. its good do have one of those little eraser stick things too, helps you keep clean edges on your shading when you want them

>> No.2015962

>>2015957
That's pretty much what I was already doing, although I think your hatching is much cleaner.

I'm currently doing everything in .5 roller pen, I'll try to get those nice light strokes for the shadows and work in the pencil more to get variety.

Thanks!

I see what you're saying, but your redlining makes the face looks very different, the "rule" I was talking about was that the tip of the lip should go along the same line of the bottom of the nose (following the curve of the face.)
And although it depends mostly on the subject, ears usually go from the bottom of the eyebrow to the bottom of the nose.

I'm not saying yours is wrong by any means, it's just things that I've observed throughout the years I've been following Josei artists.

Here's the sketch, maybe it can show where I began to go wrong, or see where I'm coming from when it comes to the angle of the face.

Her shadow also doesn't match up with its light source, and it should blend in with what I'm assuming is the inside of a cave.
Also I'm getting the vibe you're hiding their hands and feet on purpose.

We regret to inform you that the kind, generous and supremely talented Anon passed away today from cancer and 4chan.

Their childhood dream to be like the great Vilppu has come and gone. They were a great artist, and their dedication to studies of hot chicks and Loomis will never be forgotten. Hopefully their body of work, which consisted primarily of amateur fantasy/sci fi concept art and well rendered boobs will long outlast them and create a legacy cherished by historians.

Thank you for all your love and support in this darkest of hours.
Sincerely,
Anon's Family

lineweight is applied on the same line, think doing strokes with very runny watercolor and dipping the paintbrush after every line, but having a maximum width, if that makes any sense

Onee san "type"? Shit even basic anime niggas know it's spelled "taipu"

Anyway, if you try not to deviate from simple construction, you'll have a simpler result. Using thicker lines can also shoehorn you into a more stylized result.

I mean if you're totally clueless, just start copying some simpler more stylized dudes until it starts to feel natural, overwhelm your tendencies and flagellate yourself when you get start getting too meticulous about details. But be forewarned, unless you get loose and comfortable with the idea of something simple you'll always feel like you have to add more and complicate things.

Really though, I don't think it's such a simple matter of going stylized. The simpler you get, you should become proportionally more precise and bold about the smaller number of variables you have to juggle to really define the style. That means extra attention to shit like lineweight and proportions.
