what if it's not an excuse? Now I'm not saying I am grandmaster for my marks but I'm saying how exactly is this emphasis on outline supposed to do anything other than kill the movement of your gesture? As you travel around versus inside of it I can't help but feel you are losing something.
Like, these are sketches, so if I were to make a finished piece I would be cleaning up using that medium, or tone or something. I suppose my question is why sketches in particular would require this outline method?

Not that anon, but i agree with him.
If you worked on your line economy and confidence, your work would accel.

I don't care about your style, but realize that every line should have a purpose. Don't just put lines down and say "ill figure it out later".

>b-but it's just a sketch!
Yeah, thats what it is, a quick, sketchy representation of an idea. And if your wasting time trying to figure out the form and the shapes but just putting lines down, then the moment has already passed. Your sketch will look nothing like your original idea at the end.

It seems like you have a good grasp on anatomy and a little bit of drapery, so why do you need all of those excess lines? You should have some idea where everything should go.

Now guidelines and building up basic forms is a whole different conversation. But it looks like you are already past this stage, so i don't understand your un-confidence.

Maybe try working on rendering things, using dark shadows to help emphasize parts as well as hide details. That would help because it qould get rid of the
scribbly lines and flatness that your "style" has at the moment.

tl;dr
Improve line quality by being more confident and efficient... and try to introduce rendering if your drawings are still flat.

Careful that you aren't falling into lazy symbol drawing. I can see you starting to venture into that territory especially on places like the nose where you draw it from the same angle each time with the same shadow behind the bridge of the nose. Maybe try drawing a bit larger, with a sharper pencil, and just trying to get the structure as clear as you can. Probably would be good to draw the head form different angles too.

Tablets are pretty awkward from the start. Its hard to make good lines, not as much drag as paper.

You should do warmup shapes with it to get used too movement on it, and also use layers, since the upside of a tablet is ease of laziness. You can be super sketchy and then clean it up with another layer really quickly.

I have a sketchbook I draw in from time to time when it's slow at work. So most of these pics im gonna be posting are done in like, three-four minutes if that. But I still think they come out pretty good. Medium - Pen and ink (usually ballpoint, but sometimes I break out my brush pen/microns if I have the time) paper - moleskin notebook paper.

Only people worse than me were my friends that brought me (I don't have any art friends). It was a pretty humbling experience, even more so than my first time on /ic/. It was nice to finally baseline with the real world.

When sketching you should try to assemble the gestural core. I see a lot of lines but very little expression and gesture. You can make a posed image look like it's in motion if you work more on gesture drawings.

Expression to me means that you can feel the intended movement. Each contour of the body should be aimed at conveying the movement and emotion that would be happening in 3d space mid movement. In a way your sketches look compressed into 2d and so the movement and emotion doesnt come through. I will look for an example of how subtle posing can alter feeling.

No problem, it's way out of my comfort zone & I've been avoiding perspective/buildings/mechanical stuff for over a year.

I hope that in a few months (is weeks too optimistic?) I can post something decent.

More like, I should draw guidelines first. Will do. :)

Copying peoples cartoon styles how you are will only grow to you using symbol drawing. Try working in pencil or just lightly in pen and actually draw the shapes they consist of. You're pictures look good but essentially you won't learn much unless all you want to know how to draw are specific characters from that gem show.

I can draw. I just wanted to learn the basic anatomy from that show and try to implement one of my characters that I am working on in that style. I like experimenting. I typically draw in pencil and draw the shapes first. This was just a whim that happened. Thanks for the feedback Anon
