Also one thing about repetitious details like scales is that you don't necessarily have to draw each one, just like you don't have to draw each strand of hair. A clump of them is usually enough to give the "suggestion" of the texture. Like this image

here I am,
I probably should have explained my layers in that pic. I suck at explaining but here we go,

Above the flat color layer, I did a solid magenta color on multiply, at like 60% opacity.
I use white to erase the magenta, leaving the basic shadows behind.

Above that layer I put a layer on Luminosity and add reflective lights and highlights. (I got really out of hand with it)

Took about 50 minutes.
It's really basic, I only do it this way because it's quick and I work a lot so I barely have time to draw for fun anymore.

I just keep my lines thick and use the selection tool for each area. That's why a lot of the lines connect.

It's just faster this way, i'll do the shading on one layer and highlights above it and move onto the next selection.

Most of the time i'll erase some of the connections, but like someone noticed last thread, I hadn't erased the belly line.

Rendering and drawing overall looks awesome. As others have said the face looks a little off-kilter; it may have been intentional to give her an unsettling visage, but if not I'd say that it looks like the eyes might be off course a little bit or perhaps its her mouth or nose.

It's freakin' awesome though man keep it up.

I rolled Elemental princess earlier but I tried making some original designs instead of the one on the list, since there are a few options for elemental types. These two were for gnome and sylph.

I'd like to ask ic again if you think you can come up with a good recolor of Imp Princess.

Something about this color scheme just rubs me the wrong way.

You might want to work on the open eye though. The shape of the pupil and the thickness of the eyelash kind of create a tangent wherein it and the lash blend together in a kind of jarring way.

Different guy, but this is my insight.

Part of the reason is that when you say, "Good Job.", it gives the impression that nothing more can be done.

This leads to the recipient to believing that they are fine where they are and that they no longer need to improve or try in some cases. It builds a sort of false confidence. Anecdotes incoming.

I'm a beginner myself and about two months ago I really thought I had my anatomy down, so I showed it to one of my friends who's more artistically inclined than I am. They gave me the usual, "Yeah man, it's great!", friends being supportive. Then, when I went back to doing anatomy, I found that my abilities did not hold up to my previous standards. This led to frustration.

A different example is Counter-Strike. I've had matches where I just absolutely cannot miss a shot and the win is easy. In my next match I'll feel like I'm better than I actually am and I won't try as hard I was, leading to a poor performance.

No. Trying harder does not get you better. You have to create a plan designed to create the improvement you want to happen.

If you just try to force your will power on "pushing harder" to "do something better" you're just going to end up frustrated.

Don't "try harder" at getting better at perspective
Identify what you don't understand about perspective and make plans that teach you the parts of perspective you don't get. This teaches you perspective and gives you complete control of it.

You can repeat this for anything you need to improve on in anything.

Okay, I rolled a pirate princess some time ago, I don't remember.

And so I started working on it, and halfway through sketching I realize I hate the design, and even the concept, and my ideas and compositions are as boring as ever and the picture will end up with about zero personality - as always.

So I dropped it. Did some dynamic pose doodling instead. I bet a lot of people actually do work on their "assignments", but end up dissatisfied and/or frustrated with their work and never post the result.

I start with a charcoal sketch then I take a photo with Pixlr application then I use any filter which seems to bump the paper texture, I open the jpeg with SAI and duplicate the layer in order to recover the paper texture when I need it,

Yes, that would be an issue, that's why I mostly use my phone camera for this stuff. You could also try using ArtRage it contains several rugged textures for the canvas and the brushes have a convincing traditional appearance.
