Drawing with your whole arm as opposed to just your wrist. Can someone elaborate on this for me? I saw it posted in another thread, something about drawing "long, straight lines".

[And highly cherry picked image from years and years ago, I seem to have gotten worse since then.]

I ask because upon drawing, I noticed I only really use my wrist. Wrist and elbow at most.

Is this wrong? Is there something I'm missing out on?

Your elbow acts a mobile spindle and lets your lower arm draw long confident lines, opposed to chicken scratch that you get with your wrists; but this really only applies to large scaled drawings. If you're not doing anything past 12" x 8" you shouldn't bother with this technique.

ah, well I don't know much about this technique but drawing with your whole arm is too much of an exaggeration, and often leads to roughing out your images as you wont get proper lines, but you will get smoother ones.

If any of you who have never drawn before spend 10 years studying Loomis or any of the sources that /ic/ provides you, and you spend 10 years every day practicing according to the rules of art... no matter what style you end up with, you will be infinitely better then I.

This is 10 years without those rules. Really, this is a lifetime without those rules. It will get you no where.

Don't think those who picked up a pen from birth have an advantage. Stop believing in "talent". You wouldn't say a surgeon is born with the "talent" to be a surgeon, would you?

too much reliance on outlines, at this resolution they just take up space. you should rely on conveying form primarily through good usage of pixel clusters instead. The character is pretty stiff and fly-swatted, and suffers from noise caused by single pixels. you also want to think about lighting and forms to give give the sprite weight and visual clarity.

When you study some of the basic Loomis books on cartooning, they are going to build form much like you are to imitate JoJo.

That being said, you are eventually going to end up with a terrible looking face. The chin is not round. You don't have to redo it but after you draw your circle and your cross through the center... mark the hairline, line that marks the bottom of the nose, and then put you chin in. It'll help out at lot. Draw that man a chin, don't wait.

You can oversimplify later but it is important to establish where every should be. With a chin, your man should be just slightly taller.

In general, my knowledge of proportions and ability to draw faces at all is about equal to a sack of angry cats. With this method specifically...

I don't even know, man. I honestly am putting down lines - especially in the torso - without fully understanding why, because of watching hampton draw and being told to do what he was doing. I haven't made a connection yet as to what he is seeing when he draws the back of the spine in the complete opposite direction of what I would have expected. He says to draw the inside and I swear I know what a skeleton looks like but I'm not seeing what he sees when he looks at images I guess.

So right now I'm imitating without fully understanding why I'm doing what I'm doing. My gesture drawings before this has been a lot more of drawing the basic shapes that I see, trying to build my visual library and practice proportion. So I'm also trying to fight against the urge to do that instead. I do understand that he's trying to teach people to invent and not imitate, though. I am absolutely on board with trying this method... or I'm trying to catch the bus to get on board with it, anyway.

Truth be told, if you don't like Fun with a Pencil, you don't have to finish it. However it is a good book to use in order to give yourself exercises and things to draw.

Successful Drawing will teach you the basic fundamentals of Drawing as it goes in depth.

Perspective books will help you not just for buildings, but figure drawing as well when it comes to drawing people, animals, bird porn, etc. So make sure you get those things down.

At your point, focus on drawing than rendering out. Your main issue are your proportions, placements, and the contour (that said, the 1st one isn't that shabby and is pretty decent at your level.) I would do the more simple examples like the arm before tackling the head sculptures.

For things like symmetry and placement, do pic related with the lines. Measure up your proportions and landmarks (feel free to do that thingie where you close your eye and use your pencil to visually measure it a la life drawing class), and it will be much easier. Symmetry is a bitch by the way.

Continue practising.
>>2011651
Size is def. important, but you don't need that large of a tablet. Just don't get something small. Cintiq is a completely different thing (tablet monitor, save up for it later when you're more gud) and is more traditional as you're drawing directly on it.
>>2011607
Studying is boring, but when you finish whatever sessions you have every day, you can put that learning into something you want to draw. As you shouldn't be learning how to draw exclusively by doing studies, obviously.

>> No.2011675

>>2011672
Yeah, I like my Intuos 3 but it's small and I wonder if it would just be better drawing on a Cintiq than on a normal tablet because I'm taking traditional art classes and aim to take digital ones too eventually. Basically just the difference of feel between the small/large and cintiq type

>> No.2011678

>>2011675
Well, if you can throw the dosh for the Cintiq, go for it. No point in practising with a traditional tablet if you'll be using a Cintiq.

As for the differences, they're completely different tablets (that said, don't get the Companion 1 or whatever tablet that's shit.) All you really need to know mainly is that small tablets a shit.

Cool, just I'm a beginner obviously, so I think it's probably best to do it early.

Do you think it would affect quality any, as in like helping me improve my art because of the thing itself? I'm obviously not expecting anything magical but I think most Cintiq are pretty decent size alone and going from a small normal tablet to a nice thing like that, I just wonder what it'll be like.

Ah yeah you missed a lot of things. The lighting is very different on the photo, much more contrast and much greener. You want to pay attention to things like how the ambient light is blocked over the deck from the covering and so that wall becomes very dark. Stuff like that. It's also sorta backlit so there's some speculars on the roof and stuff.

Your lines are very unsteady. Loosen up. Don't draw from the wrist and draw from the shoulder/elbow.

Imagine these forms in 3D space as if they were protruding out. The circles within the bigger circle are just guidelines of where the features are going to be. Keep doing it. It's boring and frustrating but it WILL help you in the long run.

just to clarify what I mean is I feel I can do the starting stuff
>make a circle
>put another circle for a nose
>put lines above and below it for mouth and eye line.

and then

>draw the eyes cheeks, mouth, chin
It's like pic related, not that complicated but it's like, where did all these lines come from? I can just copy the lines he drew, but if I want to construct my own face I should be able to draw my own chin and stuff right? But I don't know where to put it.

Have a look at the ones on first page and you see what I mean. I drew odd shaped chins.
