Try to find refs to fill in your gaps in knowledge. I found this ref and tried a paintover based off of it:
http://www.lovethesepics.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/In-Jordan-the-desert-called-Wadi-Rum-is-also-known-as-Valley-of-the-Moon.jpg

I tried to keep your current composition, but aimed to push some of the values and adjust some of the colors. Notice in the ref the bluing effect from atmospheric perspective, and also from skylight hitting upward facing planes noticeable in the shadows. Some of the lights could use stronger reds and yellows. From the ref I found I noticed that the sky could be lighter and less saturated as you get closer to the horizon. Also notice some of the cool purples on the underside of the clouds. Try to play around with lots of different brushes to create believable surface textures. My attempt isn't great, but hopefully helps.

A few points: I think this could benefit by defining a clear primary light source, and thinking about how bright planes should be depending on to what degree each plane faces the light source. Right now that bright yellow along the edge is flattening your forms.

I'm also unclear about the scale of this thing. The design looks like it's something big, but the grass(?) makes me think it's fairly small. I tried my hand at a paintover, but diverged a bit from your original. I tried to push the scale with atmospheric perspective, a lowered horizon, and adding some illumination from blue skylight. I also tried to imply some motion and scale by having debris erupt from the ground. It's not great, but hopefully gives you some ideas. IIRC I think there were a few MTG illustrations showing a similar creature that's probably worth looking into for inspiration.

I'd also search gatherer.com with the term "wurm" to find examples by MTG artists. Once you find one you like you'll have to google the card name to find higher res versions of the card image.

While the saturation and color scheme is pretty good, the intermittent soft edged lines are shitting on the carefree slapdash feeling you probably tried to imply. Generic gradating brushes are poison for confident looking work unless you take the time to hammer down and taper the ends and edges with erasers and shit. (And that takes forever.) In the future try to work with harder brushes from the get go.

That nose is really damn red, bro. I'm not someone to bash the "tumblr nose" but from my experiences the only types that can get away with the red nose are children, cutesy girls, rugged older outdoorsmen, and people who been out in the cold for too long, and that guy does not look like any of those. Thanks so much for the crit/references/paintover guys.

Interesting lighting is definitely something I have issues with, I think your suggestion is good. The horizon line is also not something I even really considered, the wurm would certainly look much more towering with a lower one.

I'll take a look at these references and search for some more MtG wurms for inspiration.

Really appreciate the help.

It will help you get better at drawing figures, it won't make you better with watercolors.

You can try working with charcoal on a bigger surface, it lets you get a better understanding of the figure than paper imo, and its much, much better for values. It's also cheap.

Both figures really lack a sense of depth. You have well-established perspective in most of the image, but I think you did not give enough thought to the volume of the human figures, and how they should fit in perspective. pic related - you can see how the planes of the body (torso, head, limbs, hands) are exaggerated in order to emphasize a feeling of depth and reinforce the perspective.

You can also it prime it if you want to practice painting without spending too much for practice material.

And if you want to save your charcoal work, use hair spray to fix the charcoal after you're done.

The paint that's supposed to represent the branches doesn't make sense.

The ground is great though.

I think you should've done the opposite of what you did - rather than taking a white surface and smearing bits of various greys on it, you should paint the surface greys and smear whites on it.

Don't have too much experience in painting but that's what it looks like to me.

The bit on the left center that looks like a receding road/path is great though.

if i could've done this in oil it wouldve been nice but it was snowing all day so i couldn't get outside until about 2 hours ago. as a general rule though I work from light to dark unless its night time or im painting someone with dark skin.

I started with about 20% grey as the underpainting though, so I was able to make some white areas brighter.

Perspective of the head is jacked up.

The way it appears, it's a helmet with a very well defined frontal plane.

Draw the plane in first depending on which way he's looking, then work in the rest of the helmet.

Right now it looks tilted upwards relative to us but nothing else supports that, so it just looks vertically squished.

I would guess it'd be easier if you had real drapes rather than drawing from a reference.

Absolutely love the little specks on the thorax, they give the impression of little sharp bumps. It's not completely smooth - kind of blocked out, which reminds me of the way my fingernails are.

Overall I think it's great texturewise. The legs and tips of the jaws/pincers/whatever aren't too well defined yet/flat, and the forehead above the eye has two very obvious light brush strokes. Same with the large flat grey area near the center, on the abdomen.

Better than anything I can do, keep it up.

"Correctly" is kind of a weird way to describe... well damn near anything Dali painted.

You can see how the bottom left cube sinks into the larger cube Christ is braced (?) against. There's all kinds of oddities with angles and perspective, not that they're "wrong" by any means but more like Dali being Dali, making cool paintings that also make us slightly queasy.

The other Anon definitely has some more issues, and probably shouldn't expect much from riffing Dali. Kind of turned out into a mish-mash of trying to copy Dali while unconsciously "correcting" things that didn't make sense (like Rei's body is upright while Christ's has a strange tilt to it) which in turn made the oddities copied (cube placement, shadows) feel outright wrong rather than strange.

But 10/10 on effort, pretty ambitious homage.

It probably actually does thanks to the stomach sinking in, but not to that extent.

Also his floppy dick is hilarious but feels attached off-center

I think you did a pretty good job of overall foreshortening though. Right trapazeus or whatever muscle that is on the shoulder/neck joint feels a little too high compared to the left side.

The initial sketches are passable because of chicken scratch. There's so many lines, none of them very precise, so it kind of approximates and okay shape.

well thanks.

I kinda wanted to place Rei in a different pose because Christ looks like some sort of force is pulling hin I tried to make Rei like she's pulling her weight up and riding the cube not just being pulled by it.
As for little cubes they are suposed to be inside the corhers of the big cube so it looks like the torso is inside of the cube and I suppose I placed them right, except that Rei is placed differently.

As for the floor tile it does match the cross but there's an inverted perspective.

I'm looking for a certain illustration. i've seen it on a poster, it could have originally been 80's rock album cover or a book cover or something, it was featuring a buffed half naked hairy midget in weird diving helmet heroicly carrying a 10/10 chick which was almost twice longer than him (he's a midget.) and the background was something red, like red mountains or something.

When I saw it I really liked it, now I can't find it.

Too much empty space behind the lighthouse.
I think that its size and the light from it kinda distract the eye from the whales (I'm assuming that they are the focal point) so maybe move it back a little and make it smaller.

I also moved the whales up a bit. That way there's something like a triangle between the 3 objects.

You're exaggerating the hues of her face way too much, likewise with the highlights. You seem to be throwing random colours around at times where it doesn't really exist, such as the blue/purples on the hair and lip area, and you've really missed the bounce light on the chin/neck area. The proportions of the face are slightly too enlarged for her face.

Keep practising ultimately, and check your colours with the colour picker at times once in a while at this stage (emphasis on the "check" part, don't actually use it to grab your colours.) The form isn't completely bad and how you've rendered the hair ain't too shabby either.

Doing more grayscales will help with form and to avoid that plastic/2shiny look, and maybe grind more colour studies (but light on the rendering) as hues and highlights are your biggest issues here.

Looks good anon. Careful of being a little too pink overall especially given the cool surrounding. You might be able to push the occlusion shadows a bit more in places too. The whole face is lit with sort of a soft ambient light but then you have a couple dark cast shadows by the nose and on the neck that don't agree with the rest of the lighting. The eyes are a bit flat too (and asymmetrical and looking different directions), also the lower eyelid lacks a lot of form.

yeah I've allways been using so many unnecessary lines, unsure where to put them. so I learned to calm my ass and think before I put down a line. so it started out more as an ordeal and a compromise (impatient quick drawing vs controlled lines)
They're still rash and I lack some serious anatomy and lighting skills, but I think I'm improving, slowly.

grab some basic geometric shapes, like a cup or box and draw them from various angles. if you have the time, do this on a daily basis as a warmup perhaps.
maybe you can get your hands on some toy blocks (cones and stuff)
experiment with different tools; I am either using an HB mechanical pencil or a very soft ~5B pencil. sharpen often so your lines stay consistent.
try to emulate other artists, like Doré and Dürer
(even though they're working with wood or copper engravings, they're doing the same thing; defining forms with cross hatching)

this book contains only drawings (mostly sketches for paintings and studies) by Leonardo da Vinci and it's amazing how quickly and efficient he's building 3D forms
also it's quite cheap ~16 USD

http://www.amazon.com/Leonardo-da-Vinci-Graphic-Work/dp/3836554410/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1425831608&sr=8-3&keywords=leonardo+da+vinci+taschen

Somebody give me some advice on this, it's kindof just a quick 30 minute thing but I think it turned out quite well.
Also why do the majority of you do digital art stuff? It's not very well respected by what I've heard.

not respected by who? plebs and autistic art fags?

I've never seen digital stuff in any gallery ever

I'd guess that would be partly because people who primarily do digital stuff seem to be geared towards commercial side of art. More like a tool to "explain" shit rather than to make art for its sake.
I'll also take a wild guess and claim that closeminded elitists want to keep digital stuff out of traditional galleries.

too crisp, blend some more
his right shoulder is way too low

a bit more rendered and shiny and you can be there in some time

>From the thumbnail it doesn't look bad. Put a bit more empty space in front of the dragon. Also keep the grey clouds.
Thank you!
