Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1994288

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Depends, what exactly is taking you longer to do? If you're still inexperienced I'd say just keep practicing, if you've been at it for a decent stretch of time and are still taking a ton of time to do anything, maybe you're doing something wrong.

So far so good. I think you should research more about the setting and mood.
Since you don't really have an established background, I'd recommend something like an evening light pouring from the window (from the left or whatever) and highlighting her body. It could be in a classroom or bar area, etc.
Watch out for the perspective of the bottle, table and item on walls, they all don't match. Lay down your perspective grids, and construct from there. FWIW your figure sits rather nicely in perspective.

Hey guys, I just started drawing on a tablet again because I need the flip tool and I'm bad at drawing things straight/symmetrical.

That said, I'm also really, really bad at seeing my own mistakes. Could anyone redline this or something? And at the head-ear connection area, what do people usually do? Make the lineweight thinner there?

Mouths/lips are super awkward and hard too, would be great if anyone had a good tutorial for those.

Hair also needs work. I find it hard to make the same bangs interesting and varied.

the idea is that you can bound a box around your figure, from the top of the head to tip of the toes. Then you can easly draw a box in any perspective you want, find it perspective center, wich will be also center of your figure. And then just find the other proportions. It easy, becouse you can find perspective center where the diagonals of the box intersect.

There are a lot of cool details going on in your lines, but the placement of the figures in space seems a little confused regarding the perspective. Any depth from the perspective gets flattened by the flat coloring, and how you don't separate the two people in the front into the foreground, and whatever is behind them into the background. On the left side, it's very clear that the woman is in front of a machine behind her, but on the right, it looks as though the two men are on the same plane. The guy in the cockpit should be a little bit smaller compared to the other two, but if you don't want to redraw him, I think that either lightening up the equipment that the guy on the very right is standing on, or darkening the guy in the cockpit will separate everything.

Posture on the profile view is incorrect, she's leaning backwards as if she's about to fall, but normal posture would have you leaning forward but catching yourself with the ball of your foot.

Your composition leaves much to be desired. What is the focal point of the painting? Is it the person sitting in the chair? Is it the castle in the background (that doesn't look as though it's in the background because of how you painted it)? Your placement looks incredibly flat because everything is smack dab in the middle. Also, none of your colors are coherent, and they all clash and compete with each other. Your eye is drawn to opposite sides of the painting, because the colors are all so bright, and there are no value differences. Your heavy stylization aside, it just looks really amateurish.

Work at a stupidly high resolution. The power of lineweight is somewhat relative to itself, so start with the thinnest lines you'll want to see for major contours and outside lines, and then go over in another pass to thicken parts, and then add the thinner supplemental/detail lines from there. The lines you start with should be of uniform width, just to be safe.

The problem with thinner lines, is that you have to be more profoundly aware of the subject when laying them down. They don't allow you to approximate visual information like thick lines do, you have to have a real understanding of the form of what you're drawing with thinner lines.

The way I see it, if this is the level of your work, you will probably only become frustrated when attempting to use thinner lines. You can however, assuming you have the patience, get more specific by drawing with adjustable vector tools, and setting shit up juuuust right.

I just opted not to bother inking thin until I got my drawing hand properly coordinated, and learned to fine tune the soul of my hand tendons after praying to The Varnas of Garthok. Venusian patron deity of inking.

Her features are a bit too round and lips big, makes Asuka seem Ameri/Chinese rather than German/Jap.

Dunno why you aberrated her face/head the most, it's already a focal point and chomatic aberration works better as a peripheral sort of thing.

Otherwise looks pretty solid Kron-wannabe tier, Eva fans will eat it up. Makes me wonder what you "studied" after though.

Your stylization is really uncanny, so he looks creepy. I tried doing a paintover of his face to give you an idea of how I would stylize him, while trying to render realistically. Is he supposed to be a child, or tiny adult? Because for a child, his muscles and anatomy are way too pronounced, and should be smoothed out where baby fat lies.

In regards to your coloring, it's really flat. Not only are your colors really unsaturated, but your values are really weak. You should push saturation and work on your shadows.

If you have tags that will help you organize your own blog, then put those as the sixth and onward tags (i.e. 'works in progress', so that you can find all of those on your own blog).
Otherwise, pointless.
But hey, the current search feature renders most tags useless unless someone REALLY can be bothered looking for something.

It looks shitty because that chair has no cushion, lower the "frilly bit" and fill in the space between her ass and the chair with said missing cushion.
Also maybe rotate it a bit but that's a personal taste thing.
