I'm going through some similar problems too. You have to push yourself and keep trying it and failing, but the info will start to assimilate and you'll make breakthroughs. You're probably just going to need to blaze through them for a while though. Spend long on one or two, then try to bust one out quickly, fail, read up on it again, do a slow study again, try another quick one, fail again but improve. It sucks but it's pretty much what you have to do.

Lineart is everything. It's not something you're ever 'stuck' in. Good drawing is conservatively 80% of what makes a picture good.

If you're trying to rush ahead to the painting stage because you think you can fudge your way past a bad drawing by pushing paint around, you're only going to end up frustrated. Line drawing is where the magic happens.

You gotta work with stronger colors so you can see what you are even doing, and use more directional lighting. Pillow shading is a no-no.

How do you guys go about set dressing?

If I paint people fucking in an entirely white room it looks too creepy and unnatural. So I try to include props and furniture but I don't know what to add. I look for references but if I google "room" or "restaurant" I only end up with clean and sterile magazine photos. Not helpful at all.

So how to use set design to add naturality? Pic related, it helps a lot to make the character feel alive.
