Looks okay. Nice material indication. But the red tube doesn't make much sense--what is it? The whole image is a bit boring subject matter wise and shape wise. The edges are also really sloppy but I figure you will work on them more.

I think the biggest issue with lighting is that you have it treated in some ways like a cloudy ambient scene, and in other ways like there is direct lighting. Try to keep things consistent.

i dont understand.

This color theory. Lets say i want a Split-Complementary scheme. i get green purple and blue for eg. I like to take one base color and shade it with a hue thats a bit away from base. so what if i want reds for skin in this choice ? i cant use it since i took green purple and blueish scheme ? should i slap those three colors and mix them in various ways and then color pick from those ? idk. And how do i know how much satureted and with what value pick those three ? should every of those three be in diffrent value and satruation, same or what ? what about explenation on how to choose colors with what Val and Sat in your composition. i never know should the skin be most satureted, the cloths or background.

Lips were way too big for sure. I think I may have made them too small now, but idk.

What's a reliable method of digital construction when you're drawing?

I don't struggle nearly as much in traditional sketching when compared to my digital work, and I'm not 100% sure what my issue is, but I believe it's the brushes I use. I'm so used to using a pencil and how versatile it is based on the pressure I apply on paper and how sharp the lead/graphite is, but I can't seem to emulate that digitally.

Well his brushes certainly aren't helping him. Using a scratchy texture brush to paint something soft is stupid. If you want a soft transition use a soft brush. If you want a hard edge use a hard brush. If you want texture use a texture brush. It's that simple.

There's a lot of open space. In general ask yourself why you frame your pictures a certain way. "For what reason do I need all this open space in the comp?" "Can I make the comp smaller and have the emphasis of the picture come out easier, and have a more harm.onious picture?"

Also, there is a problem with scale. We don't really know how big the whale or lighthouse poking out is. They need to relate to eachother more. What you could do is throw in more elements; could be another whale, another lighthouse even, smaller clouds in the back, etc. Here's one way to address the framing and scale issue.

you need to render it more.
as the image relys heavily on a central composition, which is not a bad one, but its also a composition that is sooo commonly used, so aid the image by further rendering the legs and torso ect. so the central figure composition is strong.

as it looks now, i fel like its the underpainting.
the edge control on most of the figure kills it too. very choppy in places. and not the good kind of choppy.

the face should not be so dark. if its looking down. the forhead should be catching light.

the moon is egg shaped.

stars are not "everywhere", look at the night sky tonight, the stars follow the arms of the milky way and normally there is one strong "wing" of stars with faded ones filling the inbetweens.

clean the trees more.

The colour is helping clarify things from the greyscale version which is good The whole thing is a bit sloppy though. I think you can simplify the building more and make sure it is drawn accurately with hard edges, then keep the rest a chaotic mess sorta since it fits the subject. But really try to differentiate the massive and solid stone building from the soft puffs of smoke and the small chaos of guns and fighting. Hope that helps!

On the scribbling that >>1996080 mentioned, I agree for the legs and mid-section, but what I got from the image when looking at the arms was that she has partially clear skin and the lines were from the flesh underneath. I thought this was a cool effect, especially on her right arm

oh, heh, i actually speed sketched the character in black and white with a messy sort of cross hatching since high-energy scribbling's really fun to me, (1) then the requester asked for a quick followup splash of color so i slapped in a two-tone sort of thing. (2) and yesterday i found the flat image i'd saved and messed with it a little, in wondering if it might be worth not discarding. (3) but it ended up looking pretty terrible and i wasn't sure what to do, until you guys helped me out. i’ll be implementing your great advice.

sorry i meant to give a crit too, instead of just being a pedant,

looks great in the thumb
the detail drop on the plinth is a little jarring
the perspective isn't from a single viewpoint, which is fine but the base of the plinth is 'hanging' because when you were drawing that you had moved your head downwards, thus you see it from a higher angle, thus the perspective is very 'natural', which can be a good thing but also can look amateurish. there's a few other little bits of drawing which are off, the head doesn't turn quite right on receding side of the face for example.
the edges are fine, could be finer but it's a sketch so, they're good really.
as for the values, not too bad. there could be more contrast, the midtones could be darker. but the separation between the lights and the darks is marked and thus appealing, the solid cast shadow is very photographic and gives it a real 'real object' kinda look, which is to be praised.

so tl;dr drawing needs a bit of work, painting is pretty good but not perfect, good job.

here's a version with the values changed around a bit to give those fuller midtones, just to show you how your whole piece looks a bit like it has a 'white filter.' this version has full on black shadows, that's from laziness though, not a recommendation :p

Hey /ic/, quick question:: let's say you want to have a picture of a character or a creature shooting lasers from their eyes, red bright lasers. Naturally shooting lasers from one's eyes is a common artistic interpretation of badassery and muh internet randomness, but this makes you face a problem: since lasers are bright and linear, they would naturally act like distractors and take the viewer's attention out of the main character and directly to the edge of the picture, leading the eye out of it. Or am I wrong? Now, your piece has no background, it's blank, so how do twist the picture or what elements you do you add to fix this problem to bring the attention back to the focus you want?

>> No.1997414

This, but if you have to have the character firing it's lazor maybe have it firing into something slanted in the foreground (but not going through it, maybe heating it so that there are two subtly glowing points) and using that, and other elements to redirect the view towards the character. Something that is bright doesn't necessarily have to draw the eye. It depends on how much it contrasts with the rest of the image. This, a thousand times over.

I like your stuff Bagbosse, but it's clear you're not pushing yourself. Make something ambitious, like a panoramic scene of a city with all the people doing their thing or something crazy like that.

Even though your sketches have appeal, they still feel just like sketches. Something you could drop in a notebook margin.

>>1998234
I like your stuff too, but often the contrast isn't really there. Your paintings turn out a bit better because they've got some color contrast, but your drawings end up looking washed out as you can see by the thumbnail.

Push that hatching darker, closer, more varied, describe the form with values. The hatching style is neato in the abstract, but it feels like a varnish over a weak drawing.

i think what i need is a caligraphy dip pen. what im using right now has a very fine point. it came with about 6 nibs, but they all end with a tip. you can't really get varied line weight. i'd love to make outlines thicker and emphasize darker areas more but with my materials right now this is 2 hours of work. not exactly as graphic and interesting as it could be.

i might get the caligraphy pen and it turns out shit though so what do i know. might be the artist and not the materials.

>> No.1998298

Stiff like a Micron or Rotring or such? Yeah, I can see how that'd take a while.

The one I use most is the small pen holder from Speedball with a #102 or #106 (I think) nib, can get a lot of variation from them.

But if you don't mind swapping nibs I suppose a calligraphy nib would work, you just wouldn't be able to vary your line on the fly.

Also, a cheaty trick I do sometimes is if I have trouble building up value I'll dip a cheapie flat brush into my "ink water" (where I wash off my nib occasionally) for a mid-tone grey and brush it in there.

I suck at understanding lighting and designing compositions with it in mind.
Dragon needs more value. Hope this isn't a bit premature for feedback.

>> No.1998311

>>1998299
I would figure out the composition more before continuing. Right now the dragon is in an awkward pose and the attention is split between him and the volcano and hte lava river. What is the story of the painting? What are you trying to show? Take a step back and figure these things out then make the changes and then you can begin rendering and worrying about lighting.

For values and stuff take a look at some reference of rocky volcanic areas like that and see what sort of value structures they tend to have, then use that as a starting point for oyur own values and colours.

When you say you have trouble planning the values for composition, a general rule you can follow is that you put the area of greatest contrast at the focal point. So it would have the lightest light and the darkest dark there. Obviously there are a billion images that don't follow this structure, but it is an easy and effective structure to use that is quite common.

I guess, to clarify, what I meant to ask, is are you think of concept art or traditional illustration for book covers, other things, story boarding, matte painting? I guess to a point you can't be too focused, but have some idea.

Even with a rather low level of skill (I think with some more development this could be pretty cool, but I don't know the extent of your rendering abilities), I think people can make money, but it will require hustling (especially if you freelance), since there's all sorts of clients out there with all sorts of budgets, as well are all sorts of companies. Not necessarily enough to make a living depending on what your life has going on in it, until you reach a certain level of skill if freelancing. But it might be easier if you have a wide base of skills and narrow down what you're interested in doing, so you can make sure your range of skills will be useful to those employers if thinking of corporate.

too my knowledge, Venom is the combination of Eddie Brock and an alien parasite that becomes his suit. Thus, he should have basic human anatomical features beneath the alien exterior. This means that issues with your picture include too few fingers, and unless the parasite has deformed his feet, this pose would be achieved by him standing on his toes, in which case his feet are too long. As well, his toes should still be there, which means not having such a deep gap between the prongs on venom's feet. otherwise, you might want to build on the chest a bit more, otherwise the layer of parasite looks thin, but shows incorrect human anatomy.
My point is that physically (maybe not mentally) he is eddie brock first, Venom second.
