A few weeks ago i wanted to see for myself if this shit is actually as common on dA, as everyone says.
So i set the deviations to "newest" and typed in "draw this again".
After an hour i had a folder with about 80 images in it. Only 2 of them showed decent improvement...
Also i usually ignored "meh" improvement, timeframes of under 1 year and everything done by artists below the age of 15. So it could have been far more.

Jesus man... the stuff is so disgustingly bad. Some of those "improvements" really fucked with my mind. Pic related

Yes, it is! It was for a school project.
I don't really use tutorials, they're often misleading or contain partial information from books and you're better off reading those.
It's mostly just practice and various resources. Best things about color I can think of, would be Gurney's Color and Light if you havent read that yet and Nathan Fowkes' schoolism course. The latter is pretty neat for more than just art theory.
Maybe also Eytan Zana's gumroad tutorial on color and light.

One of the things that really drive and helps to put emotion in an illustration is that it tells a clear story. A major thing a lot of people forget, because they just want to draw and dont think past it.

You should try doing a lot of thumbs before starting an illustration. The first one is like "Bro I see you over there but why you starring at me ?" The second one is quite obvious that they are fighting but I would push the shot make more dynamic and dont center the image.

For that first one really lool at what can be happening and why they are where they are.

Keep working at it though bro, you can totally get there!

Take your initial sketch as what you want to imitate, add details and such but try not to change it as much as you can.

For instance, your faces become much more bland- smaller, 3/4th view from the same angle, it's really boring.

Guy with the sword's initial sleeve was great, also the upturned head.
Spaceman dude's head was also more upturned, and it looked more balanced when it was larger.

I just made a layer above the colours, coloured in black wherever I wanted the shadows to be, then i changed the opacity of the layer to like 15% or whatever, and voila, it looks like shadows.

My parents and the schools I went to never really tried to teach us self-displicine. I had to wait for highschool science teachers to show me the value of true hard work, and that's also the time I finally started to do studies and improve art-wise.

My gradeschool teachers made a huge deal out of discipline, but it really just made my life miserable, and when I became a teenager there was a time when I refused to do anything. I repeated 9th grade twice before I found something that gave me a reason to try again. I think that discipline is something you have to chose. Maybe you can be guided toward chosing it, but any attempt at beating it into a childs head will only lead to problems later on.

It depends how dark the black is really. I find brown and warm shadows make pics muddy, but if used properly black is a perfect compliment. You just have to know how to use it.

For instance, black with opacity down isn't really black. It's just a darker version of the original color. Which is what most shadows are. While people often use a completely different color like purple, and it can look even worse than too much contrast with black.

You do know it doesn't have to be one or the other, right? Knowing how to "shade" (which is blatantly a basic choice of word) involves being capable of conveying form. That's the reason why people would add shading to begin with, to help show form (and sometimes lighting.)

Being able to shade ('render' would be a better choice of word) is being able to convey forms, which also requires at least some knowledge of how lighting works. You can't really do that without focusing on form to begin with.

Plenty of artists historically had very early training from big name artists, starting maybe around 8 or 10yo. They typically could reach a great level by mid to late teens. I'm sure there are some rare exceptions though. A few self taught people were doing better things that like 12 than most of /ic/ could do (Thomas Lawrence was self taught and at 10 was supporting his entire family with his portrait work). Keep in mind though that mastery takes a life time. Even the greatest prodigies were producing their best work only when they were matured as adults with decades of experience behind them.

The light source is really ambiguous. Most shadows suggest it's coming from above and to her left, but a few make it seem like it's more in front of her (particularly the one cast by her left arm). Also, don't use the dress as an excuse to not think about the shape of her legs. Unless she's secretly hiding the fact that she's an amputee, give more thought to how the dress falls on her thighs, where her knees end exactly and how her feet are supporting her weight. All of that needs to be apparent by how the cloth is stretched and distorted. It kind of just looks like her lower body is being swallowed by a magical green vortex. Lastly, unless you have a fetish for abnormally long and thin fingers, bring those niggers into better proportion with the rest of her body.

This was my draw-again attempt from a few years ago. Even the "good" one is started to look quite dated.

While I know I can "draw" better than many of the fucks from these pictures, what frustrates me beyond belief is that even the worst digital painters here are more capable than I.

I cannot get a single colored thing done, especially from imagination. They look fucking ghastly, and I don't know where to start. Hell, that doesn't even address my issue of doing things fro imagination, as now I feel I can only do black and white renders of studies.

why do people even do this "meme?"

I have no intention to ever redraw something I've already drawn. What's the point? Too see my progression? to SHOW OFF my progression? Who cares. I want to make something new everytime that I draw. I doubt there are many good artists who seriously partake in this meme. it just seems counter productive

Hell, there are people, that find fun in drawing photorealistic celebrity-portraits. I personally would get bored shitless, but i can understand that people are different.

And to come back to the meme: People do this to see their improvement. By doing this, they can see, that their work is actually bearing fruits. That's good for your motivation.
Also, if they post it somewhere they might get praise and approval from others. Of course you should be doing art for yourself. But in the end humans are suckers for social interactions and approval. So that will boost motivation even more.

That's why I said "feels and abject terror". Reading the analysis of his later works including the conversation pieces immediately preceding the self-portraits is incredibly haunting and perhaps one of the most terrifying things I've ever come across. The first thing I would have done after getting the diagnosis would be to eat a shotgun before I lost the ability to do so.
