Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1991023

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

basically a good rule of thumb is unless the arm is bent past a 90 degree angle at the elbow, the muscle contour will carry a more or less straight line from the top of the... muscle (BRACHIORADIALIS (jus googled it)) that's there, but that is also dependent on what side the hand is facin an the angle of the rest of the arm to the viewer as well... like i said, it's kinna tricky but once you get it it's super simple try usin your own arm for reference (unless it's a lil too chubby, but that's okay, there's reference photos online nwn)

>> No.1994577

>>1994517
Direction of where the eye looks at is extremely influenced extremely by how the panels are created and the contents inside regardless of the direction we read it in. I should not have to rely on culture to know that, but with the page I can't tell at all. The panels themselves have camera angles that don't seem to be a proper sequence. The black and white inking seems difficult to comprehend. The character does not seem very consistent.

The page needs more panels that glue everything together logically. There's a spaceship which suddenly moves onto a panel about what I assume to be a pilot. Is this pilot looking at the ship in the first panel? I should not have to ask that question.

To show a connection, one could make a new panel to zoom in onto the ship and show the pilot in the same camera angle. Next panel, the pilot is checking controls and then something pipes up in front of him. Next panel he looks down to check what is there. Next panel the camera angle finally changes and we can then show the original second panel.

That is a logical flow and sequence that would tell a story instead of placing pictures onto panels in a page and expecting the reader to piece together what happens. Storytelling plays an extremely large role in comics. It might sound difficult and more drawing to do, but that's what creating an effective comic is.

I think the minuscule line is fine where it's at. In fact I don't think it was put there out anatomy sakes, rather for design. It flows better with it. It's tiny and unnoticeable, but it has an effect. Cover it up and the arm seems to flatten a bit.

This next part iss not directed at the OP, but to the two anatomy artists:

This pedantic scrutiny over delinateing muscle flab and worrying over minute joint bends is for suckers who can't distinguish between art and diagram. Seriously, you autist think every lines stands in for something? Guess you also think stylization is just exaggeration, right?

big problem with this imo is the amount of color & value contrast the glove at the bottom creates, dragging the eye away from the face. i would swap the exact color of the goggles with the exact color of the glove, and then make the new goggles a bit redder in hue, and the new gloves a bit more tealish in hue just to reduce color temp contrast at the bottom and increase it at the top.

I love your shapes and coloring style. The only thing I can suggest is for you to adjust your shadow colors a bit more. On the blue, the shadow gets warmer, but everywhere else it stays the same and only gets darker in value. I really like that stereotypical 90's anime aesthetic. I think it does a better job than just about any other style in minimizing the features for animation while still leaving them convincing, I wish there was some guide on how to draw like that. it's ok to have a curvy forehead, but look at this character design hair/skull ratio- it's normal, while you made her have some kind of extended hair bulb above. your view point is from above her, but you made her look up, so there is no was for the viewer to see that much of the hair area on top- it's for the perspective if she was looking down

The facial structure is stunning, sure, but the rest of it leaves a lot to be desired in form and structure, most remarkably the hair. But it's also at the level where the only thing that can be done to improve it further is more practice rather than specifically pointing out things. Most art on /ic/ at this meh-that's-pretty-good level get ignored because there's nothing to really say. What's the point? He's too ignorant/lazy to read and apply sticky - he will just ignore my critique as well.
>inb4 no, u don't know him, he will improve, just tell him how
Fine, go ahead and PROVE ME WRONG, FAGGOT (in beginners thread).

Things that gives it a shit-tier look are:
>fucked up proportions (or you simply don't know how to perspective).
Read "Perspective made Easy", do exercises.
"Fun with a Pencil", by Loomis have a very gentle introduction to proportions and to construction.
Watch Sycra on youtube.
>anatomy (tits are in wrong place, that's not how feet looks like, knees shouldn't be "sharp")
Proko have some tutorials, you should watch them and learn how to draw gestures.
If you're more serious then read "Figure Drawing - Design and Invention" and watch and do homework from "Analytical Figure Drawing" course (both by Michael Hampton)
>construction (it looks like you don't know how to simplify hair into basic shapes, you don't know how to show a twist between pelvis and ribcage [ribcage is rotated towards us, pelvis should be rotated to the left, because of legs])
Loomis "Fun with a pencil" is a nice introduction, then move on to Vilppus "Drawing Manual". Don't forget to pirate Vilppus movies about it.

As for things you already know about, but was too lazy to do anything about them:
>colors
watch tutorial from ctrlpaint, pirate premium videos, then read those:
http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php/107217-Digital-Painting-In-PS-2
>linework (chickenscratch)
Read first chapter from "How to Draw" by Robertson - there are some useful exercises you will learn a lot from (drawing straight lines, curves, ellipses). Feel free to ignore rest of the book for now.
>I get lazy on the hands
Do more studies of them (not only yours, but also from photos), it will become easier to draw and stylize them.

When a couple of things seem off or perhaps if your drawing is on the right track, looks like shit, and need a little guidance, then it makes sense to offer specific advice.

When you show that you literally have no fundamentals and your image is complete shit, of course the advice is going to be that blunt. Sounds like we're asshole, but reading the sticky and loomis is THE best advice for your image.

excellent idea (trying to work on your storyboarding and silhouettes in this manner), unfortunately the execution isnt very good- though I guess this is why you're practicing in the first place!

Before seeking critique, I would encourage you to asses the readability if your comic in thumbnail form. Based on what you're focusing on (silhouettes and storyboarding), you should definitely be able to read your comics from a distance; however, this is not the case. you might not think it matters for perspective homework but it will leave a better impression on whomever is grading and end up getting you a better mark. Most people will only focus on less than 30% of a picture, but that other 90 percent is what matters,. so cut out that Space Ogre™ and mechanic, place attention on the Space Princess and dehumanize the Space Marine™. Too showcase you understanding of perspective ad more to the hallway or make it lead into a larger room. Your body's are improving, but you should really focus on the faces. It's where eyes go first and is most important part of piece. Draw even like 5 heads a day of chicks on tumblr or some shit, and then 5 of Miku from different angles/expressions, and just keep that up. Do it for a week and your brain will start to get the feel of what goes where. Keep at it.

>>1999807
Shading between nose and cheek is weird as well as nostril placement, unless he's supposed to have this wide and oddly shaped nose in which case good job I guess. Not sarcastic, I have no idea what the character is meant to look like, I just know nose looks weird. Also the ears are placed slightly off too, and don't line up properly. Other than that, Maybe some darker and lighter values here and there to make it pop out a bit more, it's pretty flat at the moment. Nice though.

About Vilppu, where do I get his books? Are they books or video tutorials? i only see a step by step figure drawing in the collection of books op linked, but nothing else. I remember another mediafire archive around here in one of the other threads.
The official site only sells online courses if I remember correctly.
Thanks

why can i always tell from the style, there's some weird cultural shit goin on here

on topic, bruce timm uses very specific proportions an line weights/style/shape breakdowns (i presume we're referrin to his batman phase), i feel you gotta study up more on the basics before you can attempt his way of doin things in a way that you will be satisfied with
