Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1982721

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

If I want a style like my favourite artist(s) I just do studies, and copying them until the stylisation is in my head?

>> No.1986092

>>1986082
it's not really possible to aquire someone elses style just by copying. you can let yourself get influenced, but usually your own style will differ from that of your favorites.
you can try to force it by copying, but you'll most definitely fail if you don't have the same fundamentals or other knowledge that the artist has in his head.
it's better focus on your fundies first and then develop your own style according to your influences.

you can try to study their styles it in depth. but again, without fundies it will probably just confuse you. even with good fundamentals you may not be able to grasp why an artist draws in the way he does. many choices will be totally arbitrary, that's just the nature of "style".

Not him, but yes, you can do both.
A good practice is to take a drawing you like and try to gesture and sketch what led up to it.
And of course, never trace, just draw side by side.

>paint some region on Layer 1
>duplicate Layer 1 to Layer 2
>create clipping mask on Layer 2
>delete painted region on Layer 2 (not sure if this is right)
>paint whatever you want on Layer 2 - shadows highlights etc

well as a french, there's a very simple explanation: children emulate what is on tv/books
so, 60s children draw in old school franco-belgian comic way
70s are more disney/american comics
80s is the manga generation
90s is the cartoon network generation

You can easily guess a french illustrator generation by identifying his main infliences.

there's a difference in watching an anime, and watching LOTS of them.
In the 80s, french TV got fucktons of anime: lots of magical girls, dragon ball and sailor moon, saint seiya, city hunter and hokuto no ken (yes, on CHILDREN timeslots), robots with patlabor and grendizer, etc...
Plus at the same time, some franco-japanese collabs where aired, like Ulyss 31 or the Mysterious cities of gold, which already had a style mixed between classical european comic and japanese style.

And all the while, Disney stayed strong. Disney series like Ducktales, Rescue Rangers and Talespin where also showed. And of course the "classical" cartoons like Bugs bunny and Hannah Barbera's also had their slots. Truly, the 80s where a time with much diversity on french TV

a few tips:
-measure more, and measure carefully.
-try to get forms right with longer continuous lines instead of that impatient and wild chickenscratching.
-push it more. you tend to stop at this stage, but it's still just a sketch. push your pieces further to the "finished" side. right now it's like you are drawing to show your little sketches to the thread, but actually try to push your work so far that it becomes presentable as a whole, and not only as a sketch. (that way you'll also get a better feel for what you are really capable of and what you need to work on)

seriously, don't keep fucking around with loose sketches, it'll become a habit. learn to push your pieces till the end, study or not.

honestly, studies are better done on paper. i recommend it.

>At some point will too much measuring = tracing?
feel free to trace if you can learn something from it. in fact i recommend that you trace that image and then compare/overlay the result to your initial sketch. the differences will tell you a lot about your weaknesses.
and seriously, measure more carefully. you really won't learn anything otherwise.

>I need to do warmups with the tablet, I can't get consistent lines yet
do it anyway. it isn't that hard, it's just making lines. draw and erase until you get it right if you have to, it's completely normal.
it will become easier the more you do it. "warmups" won't get you any of this experience.

>I'm not used to having a drawing span multiple days and i fear turd polishing.
if they are unsaveable turds, don't polish them, that much should be obvious. but on the other hand, it is your job to make turdy sketches into something better. you have to know when to push and when to just scrap it.

I suppose it'd take me ages to find a photo with a chick in similar pose, I just don't know where to get the refs, if there's a quick way to get what you need I don't know about it.
An I also think that thinking for myself is more beneficial to my skill.

I think I should move the elbow a bit down, it should be slightly downwards, while now it's slightly upwards.

But apart from the pose, what about the anatomy, proportions, aesthetics of her body and stuff?
This is the first time i post something and people don't tell me to kill myself and don't point out a thousand things to fix so I don't even know what to do.
Can it be I drew somethingOK? I can't believe.

Do you do any initial construction before that? Because it seems you are jumping straight into outlining the character without thinking in terms of form or perspective. This makes the drawing flat and it looks like you are still doing a lot of symbol drawing for example the eye and the whole outline of the face. Think in simple shapes first and then apply that to the anatomical construction of the human body. tl;dr you're jumping the gun, slow down you got time

I can see a bit of line width variation but its still not doing much. It really depends on how you color it too, if you left it as just ink obviously you'd have to go a bit harder with it but for coloring thin lines should be fine enough as long as you render it a bit.

Some lines on the pads, like the lines between different sheets of metal as they're joined together would be a good way to show form m8.

>> No.1988230

/ic/, I heard painting/coloring with a white background is a bad idea as it will make the color dry, and if the background color is black or something "faded" (sorry for the term, my english is very limited), the colors will appear vibrant. So if these, actions are bad, what should I do now? Do I start drawing/coloring in which color background? It seems like if I go for any plain BG color, I've done something bad.
Also, I 've read somewhere here once that it pisses off people when animu artists only use darker shade of pink for coloring skin, so I've been trying some things whenever I get free time from factory. Basically, I still use darker shade of pink, sometimes orange-ish color, and then I try to use blue or gray for darker areas. Is that bad? How do I improve skin color

A mid tone is great because it lets you work darker or lighter. As for your question over how to paint skin, it really is dependent on the style you're going for as well as the lighting, when in doubt the best options are to study from a variety of sources, your own skin, photos as well as the work of artists you appreciate, color pick the photos/art and analyze what sort of colors you get, try some life studies of your own skin or that of a models.

Good luck anon, the fact that you're varying up your colors shows that you have a lot of potential for this sort of stuff.

calling this one done. I wanted to fix some of the knees but got lazy and didn't want to clean up the face linework...

New clipping mask procedure determined empirically:
>paint base color
>duplicate base 4-5 times
>create 4-5 clipping masks from duplicates
>over base do gradient, shade 0, shade 1, highlights
>go back to each mask and use half opacity air brush eraser to soften edges

Then I tried to do the hair, it was fucking impossible. I just started scribbling the base clipping mask for the hair to add strands, now its just random... Tips on hair?

I only know how to use 2 brushes... I always want that cool painterly looking brush that gives texture, but I can't find it.

Rinfag make more line drawings and work on drafting nice lineart rather than go maximum overturdpolish with long pieces

I'd level that at any person here trying to make big extravagant painterly pieces or jerkoff render jobs, get your actual DRAFTSMANSHIP level up. Showy painting/ rendering can come later.

I dunno. I kinda like the color, but sometimes I think I'm an anomaly, even though I'm not, probably.

Anywho:
>hair
I like to handle hair by making blocks of color that suggest the major forms(geometry) of the hair, and then I just extend out from those shadows.

I'll paint up a quick example when I get home. I'm on lunchbreak atm.

Did this real fast, but hopefully it gets the point across.
Point is: define some basic geometry so your hair's not flat, and then put in some lines or whatever else to define some texture.

Everything else is largely up to how you want to render and what you want the hair to look like.

I hope that kind of helped.

They're easier to draw because they have no human facial features, so you can make mistakes and nobody will easily notice.
Human brains are made to process fine details in facial expressions that make even the smallest mistake stand out in human faces.
That's why animals and other shit are often used to avoid the uncanny valley in 3D animation.

It's pretty difficult trying to fix incorrect figures, without completely redrawing all of their poses so that they aren't stiff, and fit properly in space. In any case, I'm more focused on correcting rinfag's muscle anatomy, because that's what he emphasizes the most, but draws it all wrong.

because concept art allows people to create and conceptualize. i think anyone would like to see something they designed move and modelled on a big screen, all fleshed out and stuff.

however, this goes without saying, but it's nowhere near that. unless you have like 10 years of experience in the industry nobody will let you design the main characters for their games. for me myself, i've been given opportunities here and there to actually design something. most of what i do is rendering at work though.

>> No.1990342

>>1987600

Depends on your ability to draw straight and accurate lines, as well as the style and type of work you want to achieve. For example if you do solid clean ups with pencil a digital brush that mimics a pencil (it will be more soft and opaque than the default brush, the soft brush here will work: http://loish.deviantart.com/art/the-loish-brushset-477640124)) will do wonders for you. An advantage to this type of linework is that it is easier to feel out forms, however you will lose out on speed with this approach. This linework style is best done slowly, and a good example of it can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxcJez9Ge1Y

If you handle ink well then a brush with no opacity and the sensitivity turned on should be better for you. You could even consider scanning in your work and creating your linework traditionally. If done digitally you might place more of a focus on drawing one solid line for each line needed, like here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX8rpFKpr0Y

And you could even combine these two methods, or do some variation of them (like work with vectors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3uGeeenVls)), or something else entirely. There are many ways to do line-work, some better than others.

You could flatten all color layers and linework layer into two or three layers Just keep lines and color separate.

Or you could use Photoshops "repeat transformation" I don't use photoshop but I know it has a feature of remembering what exactly you did to one layer and doing the same again for everything,

Or I suppose you can transfor an entire group of layers if you group them up.

CTRL Paint encourages you to work with a flat imsge but I can't really make myself do it, i'm too unconfident with hat I do.

compared to americans who have a divided culture (you're either a comic book nerd who likes DC/Marvel or you're a weeabo who likes manga and anime) whereas the french have an appreciation of all genres and mediums whether its french or from another country.
